Bryan Singer Will Reportedly Return to Direct a New X-MEN Film in 2017

$

It doesn't look like Bryan Singer has any plans to stop directing X-Men films anytime soon. He's currently in the process of finishing up X-Men: Apocalypse, and it seems like not long after that movie is released, he'll be jumping back into the X-Men universe to take on another film.

The news comes from Journal De Montreal, who previously broke the news about X-Men: Apocalypse returning to Montreal for reshoots. They are reporting that Singer will start production on the new film in November of 2016, and start shooting it in early 2017 at Mel's Studios in Montreal.

There are no details on the project or word on when this next movie will be released, but it will probably happen sometime in 2018. We know X-Men: Apocalypse will conclude a trilogy that started with X-Men: First Class, and that any other films after will focus on a generation of new mutants. It's been rumored that James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender would return for future films, but that has yet to be confirmed.

Meet Constable Zuvio From STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

A new official photo from Star Wars: The Force Awakens has surfaced, and it features an alien character who goes by the name of Constable Zuvio.

Empire explains that the character is a “vigilant law officer on a mostly lawless world, who keeps order in a frontier trading post, and is apparently tough and humorless."

There's no other information on the character aside from that. The rest is a complete mystery. The character hasn't appeared in any of the trailers or promotional materials until now, though he has shown up in toy form

I've also included a bonus image from Wired that features the Millennium Falcon taking on some TIE Fighters. For more Star Wars: The Force Awakens news, click here.

Producer Simon Kinberg Says GAMBIT Will Be A Sexy Heist Film

20th Century Fox's Gambit solo film has been struggling to find a director for months, and now it appears that Edge of Tomorrow helmer Doug Liman will be the person who brings Channing Tatum's iteration of the card-throwing Cajun to the big screen. Producer Simon Kinberg, who is said to be heavily involved in the making of this movie, recently spoke with Collider about the tones of the various X-Men universe movies Fox is distributing, and he let slip a couple of tiny details about the Gambit movie:

“I mean Deadpool obviously has a very different, almost antithetical tone to the mainline X-Men movies,” says Kinberg. “The X-Men movies are dramatic and almost operatic, whereas Deadpool is irreverent and hysterical and sort of a dirty R-rated comedy in many ways. And Gambit will have its own different flavor and tone to it, will be more of like a heist movie and a sexy thriller in a way.”

A sexy thriller/heist movie, eh? That's not too surprising, considering Remy LeBeau's background in the underworld of thieves. I wonder what he'll be stealing? Reading up a little on Gambit's background, I realized that Mr. Sinister has a role in making him the mutant we know from the comics, and that reminded me that Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston recently said he wanted to play Mr. Sinister in a superhero movie. If Kinberg and his team do end up including that character in this script, I certainly hope they at least have a conversation about it with Cranston. That'd be cool to see him portray that character for the first time in live-action. Gambit was supposed to arrive in theaters on October 7th, 2016, but since the film won't even start shooting until this coming spring, that's no longer going to happen. Expect to see the movie blast into theaters sometime in 2017 instead.

Ridley Scott Describes The Opening of BLADE RUNNER 2

Here's a cool bit of news I missed from this year's AFI Film Festival. I reviewed a handful of movies from the event, finishing up last week with the world premiere of The Big Short, but one of the non-screening events that took place was a discussion with director Ridley Scott. Chinese publication Mtime was there, and they relayed some cool quotes from Scott as he talked about the opening scene of the long-gestating Blade Runner 2, which he's producing next year. Denis Villeneuve and cinematographer Roger Deakins are collaborating on the film (their third film together, after Prisoners and Sicario), and Ryan Gosling is set to star. Mtime journalist Todd Gilchrist provided an English translation to /Film:

We decided to start the film off with the original starting block of the original film. We always loved the idea of a dystopian universe, and we start off at what I describe as a ‘factory farm’ – what would be a flat land with farming. Wyoming. Flat, not rolling – you can see for 20 miles. No fences, just plowed, dry dirt. Turn around and you see a massive tree, just dead, but the tree is being supported and kept alive by wires that are holding the tree up. It’s a bit like Grapes of Wrath, there’s dust, and the tree is still standing. By that tree is a traditional, Grapes of Wrath-type white cottage with a porch. Behind it at a distance of two miles, in the twilight, is this massive combine harvester that’s fertilizing this ground. You’ve got 16 Klieg lights on the front, and this combine is four times the size of this cottage. And now a spinner [a flying car] comes flying in, creating dust. Of course, traditionally chased by a dog that barks, the doors open, a guy gets out and there you’ve got Rick Deckard. He walks in the cottage, opens the door, sits down, smells stew, sits down and waits for the guy to pull up to the house to arrive. The guy’s seen him, so the guy pulls the combine behind the cottage and it towers three stories above it, and the man climbs down from a ladder – a big man. He steps onto the balcony and he goes to Harrison’s side. The cottage actually [creaks]; this guy’s got to be 350 pounds. I’m not going to say anything else – you’ll have to go see the movie.

As /Film points out, this scene was originally intended to be the opening scene of the original movie, and the scene continued with Deckard shooting the man, who is revealed to be a Replicant when Deckard rips his jaw off. Holy cow, that sounds like a hell of an opening scene. It'll be interesting to see whether or not Villeneuve decides to stick with Harrison Ford's Deckard being the guy in that scene, or if the movie might kick off with the younger Ryan Gosling getting into the action early (the scene could be rewritten with his new character replacing Deckard there). Either way, I'm very excited about this collaboration and I'm looking forward to seeing what they can do with a sequel to one of the most beloved sci-fi films of all time.

Universal is Revving Up FAST & FURIOUS Spin-Offs and Prequels

As a huge fan of the Fast & Furious franchise, I'm excited to relay this information from Variety: Universal Pictures is developing spin-offs and prequels surrounding the characters from the mega-successful film series. The news comes directly from producer/star Vin Diesel himself:

“We’ve written out story lines for various characters,” said Diesel. “We’ve been playing with it for a long time. It’s a very rich property and we’re committed to treating it with a lot of class.”
“We’re certainly in conversations about how we can expand the franchise now,” said [Universal Pictures Chairman Donna] Langley. “It’s an ensemble cast and there’s room to bring characters in and out.”

There's no word yet on which characters will get their own movies, but it's easy to see Dwayne Johnson's Agent Luke Hobbs going on solo adventures, especially since Johnson has been talking about a Hobbs-centric spin-off for years already. I can also imagine a prequel surrounding Jason Statham's Deckard Shaw and the trouble he gets into before he entered the series in this year's seventh installment.

I'm excited about the idea of expanding the Fast & Furious universe even further than the next three films, and — as the report in Variety notes — Universal is taking the Marvel/Star Wars route here and really building on their tried and true franchise. I love the idea of giving different directors chances to come in and put their stamp on this world in spin-off and prequel films, much like what Gareth Edwards is doing with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

As for the next three movies, it sounds like a big part of the reason they brought in Straight Outta Compton director F. Gary Gray is, according to Diesel, because he's "going to bring the darkness out and bring out the character." It seems like Universal is aware that they won't be able to top the action of Furious 7 in the next movie:

“You can’t keep having every movie have bigger and bigger stunts forever and ever and ever,” said Jeff Shell, chairman of Universal Filmed Entertainment Group. “Eventually you have to really focus on the story. We’ll still have big stunts but bringing in this amazing storyteller is going to be great.”

I like the idea of cranking things down a little bit. I loved Furious 7 — it's my favorite movie of the franchise so far — but that film rode an extremely fine line of ridiculousness and legitimately awesome stunts, and writer Chris Morgan is probably very aware he risks a "jumping the shark" moment if they try to go too much farther with those kinds of moments. Bringing it down a notch might be exactly what they need.

What do you guys think about this news? Who should get a prequel or spin-off in the F&F universe, and what do you want to see happen?

10 Films That Are Surprisingly Based on True Stories

There are a lot of great films that have been made that are based on true stories. We see it all the time — the studios almost always love to advertise when films as being based on actual events. It makes seeing the film even more appealing, especially when the story it tells seems absolutely crazy. The saying of "sometimes truth is stranger than fiction" is so true.

Screen Rant has released a new video that gives us a list of movies that "You Won't Believe Are Based on REAL Stories." Some of the movies that are included on the list are Nacho Libre, Indiana Jones, A Nightmare On Elm Street, The Hunt for Red October, Star Wars, and The Shining.

When a story unfolds in the real world that seems like a movie come to life, Hollywood studios don't waste time in adapting it. But not every movie based on a true story is clearly advertised as one, which means some stories that seem too strange, too hard to believe, or just too well-hidden to be based on fact slip by audiences. Let us know if we missed any in the comments below! Here are Screen Rant's 10 Movies You Won't Believe Are Based On Real Stories.

Matthew McConaughey In Talks To Play Gunslinger Roland Deschain in THE DARK TOWER

$

Update: The Wrap's initial report stated McConaughey was being eyed to play gunslinger Roland Deschain, but they've since updated their report to say that the actor has been offered both that role and the role of the villainous Man in Black. The AV Club has a good breakdown of what that might mean and how McConaughey could conceivably be the villain in a Stephen King shared cinematic universe with this and The Stand. Original article follows.

Oscar winner and True Detective star Matthew McConaughey has been rumored to play the villain in the upcoming film adaptation of Stephen King's The Stand, but now it appears he might be playing the hero in a different King story altogether: the long-delayed and highly-anticipated adaptation of The Dark Tower.

The Wrap reports that McConaughey has had early conversations with the filmmakers, but a deal isn't in place yet. If an offer is made and the deal goes through, the actor will play gunslinger Roland Deschain, a part variously linked to actors like Javier Bardem, Russell Crowe, Christian Bale over the years. Here's the official synopsis of the first book in the series:

The Man in Black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed. So begins Book I of Stephen King’s iconic fantasy series, The Dark Tower. Part sci-fi novel, part futuristic dystopia, part spaghetti Western, and part high fantasy vision, The Gunslinger tells the story of Roland Deschain, Mid-World’s last gunslinger, who is tracking an enigmatic magician known only as the man in black. Following his quarry across the demon-infested Mohaine Desert, Roland confronts a mad preacher woman and her murderous flock, holds palaver with a speaking demon, and finally befriends a young boy from our world named Jake Chambers. Jake joins Roland on his quest, but while Roland travels with his young companion Jake, the man in black travels with Roland’s soul in his pocket.

Nikolaj Arcel is writing and directing the movie, which is said to kick off an ambitious franchise that includes multiple films and a TV series that will bridge the gap between movies. There's no word yet if the TV show would involve Deschain or if it would concentrate on other characters in The Dark Tower lore, so it's unclear whether securing this role would mean a return to TV for McConaughey as well...if he even takes the part. The Wrap says it's unlikely that he'd star in both this and The Stand, and they speculate that a role in that film a little farther down the line might mean that he ends up passing on The Dark Tower. (Plus, Christopher Nolan will be shooting his next movie in 2016 for a 2017 release, and he's known to work with the same actors over and over again, so it's possible McConaughey could join that project instead.)

Either way, it looks like we might see McConaughey in a Stephen King adaptation sometime in the next few years. Do you think he's a better fit for The Dark Tower or The Stand?

THE WALKING DEAD Season 6 Ep. 7 Promo and Clip - “Heads Up”

My big question from the last episode of The Walking Dead was whose voice was that on the radio saying “help” at the very end?! I’d like to believe that it’s Glenn, but it could be a number of other people. We’ll just have to wait and see what his fate really is. I’m still holding out hope that Glenn's not dead. I liked the last episode, but it had way too many commercials! I think I spent more time watching ads than I did watching the show. It also looks like we got our introduction to Negan’s group. Jeffrey Dean Morgan was cast in the role, and he will be introduced in the season finale. I’m really curious to see how they handle this character in the series because in the comics he is so damn hardcore and evil.

While we wait for that, we have a promo spot and sneak peek for the upcoming episode titled “Heads Up.” It comes with the following brief plot summary:

Alexandria is finally able to begin pulling itself back together; peace is embraced between the two groups.

Everything is pretty vague, but we’ll see where it takes us. There are only two episodes left this year! Let us know who you think was asking for help on the radio.

Preview - Scarlet Witch #1 - The Quest To Fix Witchcraft

Marvel really seems to be focusing more on the magic parts of their universe post Secret Wars, and Wanda Maximoff is benefitting from that newly focused spotlight. The new series features writer James Robinson at the helm, along with a revolving cast of A-list artists, including Vanessa Del Ray, Steve Dillon, Marguerite Sauvage, Joelle Jones, and many more. Scarlet Witch will find herself in a variety of locations, such as Manhattan, the Greek Isles, and Hong Kong, all while attempting to fix what has long been taken for granted, Witchcraft. Something, or someone, has broken it, and Wanda has taken it upon herself to fix it.

Scarlet_Witch_1_Preview_3.jpg

I’m all for this solo take on Scarlet Witch. A sort of magical detective who solves crimes or cases with a heavy magical and supernatural bent while also trying to solve a much bigger puzzle. Hopefully her being for the most part on her own (aside from a few guest appearances, I imagine) will allow Robinson to really delve into how her powers work, and what is behind them, and allow him some creative room to work. As for the art, while I’m typically not keen on revolving art teams, if they can use that to their advantage with all the varying locales Wanda will be visiting, then it could actually prove to work in the book's favor. For the record, I'm really liking what I have seen so far of Vanessa Del Rey's work in issue one.

Scarlet Witch #1 releases on December 9. You can get a glimpse of the first issue in the preview above, and some of the launch variants below.

Plot Details About That Steve Trevor WONDER WOMAN Photo

$

This past weekend Said Taghmaoui posted a photo of himself with Chris Pine, who is supposed to be playing Steve Trevor in Wonder Woman. There seemed to be some confusion among people regarding the period setting attire he was wearing. A lot of people thought we would see the character in a modern day setting. Here it looks like 1930/1940s type gear.

Well, thanks to Heroic Hollywood, we have some possible new information for you about that. This hasn’t been confirmed, so we will treat it as a rumor. Like a lot of rumors, it makes for good conversation with our friends and fellow geeks. They could include SPOILERS, though, so proceed with caution.

The picture that was released is not of Steve Trevor. The site's inside sources say that it might actually be his grandfather. The site explains:

You see, during the World War One section of the movie, Steve Trevor's grandfather is the one that crashes on the island and meets Gal Gadot's Diana. Grandpa Trevor is the one who shows Diana the outside world and helps her beat Ares. He then passes away.
In modern times, Diana meet's Grandpa Trevor's descendant THAT LOOKS EXACTLY like him, and helps her battle Ares again. So Chris Pine is playing a dual role. Both Steve Trevor and Grandpa Trevor. Makes total sense when you think about it and within the realm of possibility.

My only issue with this is that they say it’s set in World War I. It seems more likely that it would be World War II. WWI took place from 1914 to 1918. That would be great-grandfather kind of material. So it seems to me that it would be a WWII setting.

It’s also rumored that Taghmaoui will be playing a superhero in the movie. We just don’t exactly know who that would be if true.

Wonder Woman is currently shooting in London and is set to hit theaters on June 23rd, 2017.

With the final film in The Hunger Games franchise coming out, Vulture released a video that shows us what the franchise would have been like if it was produced back in 1992. It has a very fun retro VHS look and feel to it, and the voiceover narration is perfection because it was done by “In a World” voiceover artist Don LaFontaine. You’ll definitely recognize the voice when you hear it! It was such a nice little touch to the video. It was created by Louis Plamondon, aka Sleepy Skunk, and if you grew up in the 90s, then you’re gonna enjoy it.

Marvel Studios has released a new photo from Marvel’s highly anticipated second season of Agent Carter.  They also announced that the new season will premiere on Tuesday, January 5th at 9:00 PM ET on ABC.

I was a huge fan of the first season of this show, and I can't wait to see Carter's adventures continue in Los Angeles. Hayley Atwell reprises her role as Agent Carter, and she will be joined by James D’Arcy as Edwin Jarvis, Chad Michael Murray as Agent Jack Thompson, and Enver Gjokaj as Chief Daniel Sousa. Here's the synopsis:

Marvel’s Agent Carter returns for a second season of adventure and intrigue, starring Hayley Atwell in the titular role of the unstoppable secret agent for the SSR (Strategic Scientific Reserve). Dedicated to the fight against new atomic age threats in the wake of World War II, Peggy must now journey from New York City to Los Angeles for her most dangerous assignment yet. But even as she discovers new friends, a new home–and perhaps even a new love–she’s about to find out that the bright lights of the post-war Hollywood mask a more sinister threat to everyone she is sworn to protect.

The supporting cast for season 2 will include Dominic Cooper as Howard Stark, Bridget Regan as Dottie Underwood, Wynn Everett as Whitney Frost, Reggie Austin as Dr. Jason Wilkes, Currie Graham as Calvin Chadwick, Lotte Verbeek as Ana Jarvis, Lesley Boone as Rose, Ken Marino as mob boss Joseph Manfredi, and Kurtwood Smith as Vernon Masters.

It'd be great if this next season turns out even better than the first. I also hope that it's more popular this time around so that fans will get to see a third season!

LEGO Creates Anti-LEGO Slippers to Prevent Pain of Stepping on LEGOs

I don't know about you, but I've had my fair share of pain from stepping on LEGO bricks that are left on the floor. It's never fun, and it's usually followed by a slew of foul language as I pick the LEGO brick out of my foot and hop around. It's a terrible, terrible pain.

LEGO has acknowledged the problem and they've created official anti-LEGO slippers that feature extra padding for protection. These are a limited addition item, and only 1500 people will be lucky enough to get a pair. The slippers will be randomly given away for free to people that create a wish list on the Lego France website.

These would be a great novelty item to have, especially if you're a LEGO fan. If you do have an on-going issue with stepping on LEGOs, though, you should probably find yourself some other slippers to wear around the house. If you specifically want LEGO slippers, though, and you don't get a pair of these, you can always get yourself these LEGO Build a Brick Slippers!

Val Kilmer Set to Return For TOP GUN 2!

$

0

Val Kilmer confirmed on Facebook today that he was asked to come back and reprise his role of "Iceman" in Top Gun 2, and that he accepted the offer. He writes:

“I just got offered ‪Top Gun 2. Not often you get to say 'yes' without reading the script… We will all miss Tony Scott one of the kindest gentlemen I’ve ever met in the film biz, but let’s fire up some fighter jets again!!!”

Tom Cruise has been expected to return for years, so it will be pretty freakin' cool to see Maverick and Iceman on screen together again. Do you think we'll get to see them play volleyball against each other again...as older out-of-shape men?

This Top Gun sequel has been in development for quite a few years, but it seems like things are actually starting to pick up, especially with the announcement of Kilmer. That's sure to get fans excited.

Jerry Bruckheimer is producing the film and he previously said that the story would involve  a modern version of aerial warfare with drones and remote pilots. It was also revealed the film would be set 30 years after the events of what we saw in Top Gun.

The last thing we heard about the project came from Skydance Productions CEO David Ellison, who is also a producer on the project. He said:

"Justin Marks is writing the screenplay right now. He has a phenomenal take to really update that world for what fighter pilots in the navy have turned into today. There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie and there is no Top Gun without Maverick. It is going to be Maverick playing Maverick. I don’t think it is what people are going to expect, and we are very, very hopeful that we get to make the movie very soon. But like all things, it all comes down to the script, and Justin is writing as we speak."

Tony Scott was interested in returning to direct the film before his tragic death. The project still doesn't have a director, but I can't help but think that Michael Bay should be the guy to bring it to life. I'd much rather see him do this than another Transformers movie.

This is in all sincerely one of the most beautifully produced animated shorts that I’ve seen in awhile. The style, tone, and attention to detail is simply stunning. Here’s the brief synopsis that came with the video:

Martin Scorsese's return to HBO looks like a rockin' good time. OK, so technically, The Wolf of Wall Street writer and Boardwalk Empire showrunner Terence Winter is the creator of Vinyl, but Scorsese is producing the show and directing the pilot, and it's clear his influence is all over this thing. We've seen a couple of trailers already, but this is our best look at the show so far, revealing more of the larger story going on behind the glitz and glamor of rock stars on stage and cluing us in to some of the troubles of record exec Richie Finestra (Bobby Cannavale). We get a better look at Ray Romano and Olivia Wilde's characters here, too. With an eclectic cast that includes those mentioned as well as Juno Temple, Max Casella, P.J. Byrne, J.C. Mackenzie, and Mick Jagger's son James, this looks like a show with a ton of energy and vitality that will fit right in with the great dramas on HBO.

Vinyl debuts on February 14th, 2016 at 9pm.

Dad Awesomely Poses For His Son's Geek Culture Art

Artist Jason Edmiston has released a series of photos featuring his father posing for several of the pop culture art pieces that he has created over the years. They give us a little insight into how this artist works by using actual photo references to bring his illustrations to life. His model of choice is his dad, and he wanted to pay tribute to him by posting these. Edmiston had this to say on Bored Panda:

"I’ve been creating pop culture art professionally for 20 years, and have always shot my own photo reference, usually with the greatest model I’ve ever met, my dad.
"Most of my work, which includes movie posters, toy packaging, art prints and advertising art, relies to some degree on photo reference. Some of that reference includes screen grabs or press photos of the subject to achieve a proper likeness and correct costume details. The rest is made up of photographs that I take myself, of my father, with appropriate lighting and costuming. I reinterpret these photos, mixing them together with shots of the movie characters to create a new, unique image.
"When I have a concept sketch for a piece worked out, I pop over to my parents’ house and get my dad to dress up like the character while I set up lighting to match the scene. He’s very accommodating, and willing to pose in all sorts of ways, and always manages to get into character. He never says no to a request and is always enthusiastic. I have yet to meet a better model.
"Thanks, Dad!"

It's fun seeing his these reference photos of his dad next to that actual art that he posed for. His dad looks like a pretty badass dude. Some of the art here includes pieces inspired by Evil Dead 2, The Joker, A Nightmare on Elm Street III, The Lost Boys, Big Trouble in Little China and more.

Robert De Niro and Jennifer Aniston to Co-Star in THE COMEDIAN

$

If I were to sit down and make a list of cinematic couples I'd like to see on the big screen, the pairing of Robert De Niro and Jennifer Aniston would be a few thousand entries deep simply because it's such an unexpected combination. But apparently it's coming to a theater near you, because Deadline reports that Aniston has signed on to star opposite De Niro in a passion project of his called The Comedian to be directed by Taylor Hackford.

De Niro, who played an aspiring comedian before in Scorsese's 1982 movie The King of Comedy, will play a "toxic insult comic" who meets Aniston's character at a wedding and develops a close relationship with her. Art Linson wrote the script with comedian Jeffrey Ross, who you probably recognize from Comedy Central roasts, and all of De Niro's character's stand-up material is written by Ross. As someone who's never found Ross very funny, this sounds kind of awful to me, but apparently De Niro has been working to get the film made for years. He finally got his wish, and shooting starts next year in New York.

I have almost no faith in this project considering the kind of comedy that will likely be on display, the bizarre cinematic pairing of actors, and the fact that Hackford is directing. Sure, he has An Officer and A Gentlemen and Ray on his resume, but more recently he directed Parker, one of the worst action mainstream movies I've seen in years. (Even seeing that movie at the Playboy Mansion couldn't save it.) I'd love to be proven wrong, but this seems like a bad idea from the outset.

Do you think The Comedian has a shot at being good?
