Andy Serkis Talks About The Mysterious Supreme Leader Snoke From STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

Along with the tons of new Star Wars: The Force Awakens info we covered this morning, actor Andy Serkis has finally spoken about his mysterious character, Supreme Leader Snoke. We know he's a shadowy figure who's in charge of The First Order, but information about his character has been extremely hard to come by over the past few months. In a new interview with EW, Serkis offered up some details about the look of the character, as well as how he's "vulnerable" yet "powerful":

“It’s the first time I’ve been on set not yet knowing what the character’s gonna look like. I mean, talk about secrecy! When we first started working on it, he had some rough notions of how Snoke was gonna look, but it really hadn’t been fully-formed and it almost came out of discussion and performance.”
“Supreme Leader Snoke is quite an enigmatic character, and strangely vulnerable at the same time as being quite powerful. Obviously he has a huge agenda. He has suffered a lot of damage. As I said, there is a strange vulnerability to him, which belies his true agenda, I suppose.”

That part about him suffering "a lot of damage" makes me wonder. Possible spoilers here, I guess, but I remember hearing speculation in the early days of this film that maybe the Emperor somehow survived at the end of Return of the Jedi, and if that's the case, I wonder if Snoke is a cybernetic or reformed version of that same man, calling the shots from the shadows. When asked if the character's wounds came from the original trilogy's clash between the Rebellion and the Empire, Serkis hesitated before responding:

“No, he’s a new character in this universe. It is very much a newly-introduced character,” Serkis says. “He’s aware of what’s gone on, in the respect that he has been around and is aware of prior events. I think it’d be fair to say that he is aware of the past to a great degree.”

He's aware of the past to a great degree? Is that because he was physically there for a lot of the main events depicted in the original trilogy? I know he says he's a new character, but if I wanted to put on a conspiracy theorist hat for a second, maybe that's only a new character in name only, or a new persona he's adopted even though he's really the same guy as before. Something to consider, anyway. That hesitation could be more important than we know.

As for whether or not he could have played the character using practical make-up, Serkis says there's no way it would have worked:

“No, no,” the actor says. “The scale of him, for instance, is one reason. He is large. He appears tall. And also just the facial design – you couldn’t have gotten there with prosthetics. It’s too extreme. Without giving too much away at this point, he has a very distinctive, idiosyncratic bone structure and facial structure. You could never have done it [in real life.]”

Well, color me intrigued. Hopefully we'll find out the truth on the night of December 17th when Star Wars: The Force Awakens debuts in theaters.

Review: ANOMALISA (AFI FEST 2015)

$

A labor of love years in the making, Anomalisa is startlingly human for a movie comprised only of stop-motion puppets. It's a film about love, hope, fear, connection, and loneliness, and it marks a return to the cinematic territory of Charlie Kaufman, the man behind Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Being John Malkovich, Adaptation, and Synecdoche, New York, complete with the surreality and palpable emotion that filmography promises. This is one of the most remarkable movies of the year.

David Thewlis provides the voice of Michael Stone, a bland, middle-aged author who flies in to Cincinnati to deliver a speech at a customer service conference the next day. Everyone he sees — his wife and son back home, the guy sitting next to him on the plane, the hotel desk clerk — has the same face, and they're all voiced by Tom Noonan. Everyone, that is, except for Lisa, an unassuming woman staying at the same hotel who's in town with her best friend to catch Michael's speech the next day. Lisa is voiced by Jennifer Jason Leigh, and her feminine voice and unique face slices through the dull Noonan-speech and sameness that dominates Michael's life, intoxicating him and drawing him to this newfound anomaly in his world. (Get it? Anomalisa?)

Though we're obviously immediately confronted with the fact that we're watching stop-motion puppets as the film begins, the astoundingly accurate production design helps establish the reality of the world, and within a couple of minutes, I completely bought into what Kaufman (who wrote the screenplay) and his co-director Duke Johnson were doing. It also helps that Michael and Lisa are wonderfully expressive, compelling, fully emotional characters whose desires and insecurities are instantly recognizable in our own lives.

The film's premise never allows the viewer to forget that we're watching puppets on display, but the movie still goes out of its way to get all of the little details exactly right. There's award-worthy production and sound design here, with the tiniest aspects of every location rendered with spot-on accuracy and careful precision. Dust motes float in front of a spotlight, ice clinks in a glass, and the sweaty noises of sex — oh yes, there's a puppet sex scene, full frontal nudity and all — are translated with breathtaking skill. Concentrating on all of these mundane elements pulls us in even further, and the directors find tons of comedy in everything from Michael dealing with chatty cab drivers to burning himself in the shower. (They're the kinds of things that don't sound funny on paper, but in context, they're laugh out loud moments. I laughed more in this than most straight-ahead comedies I've seen this year.)

I think I'm going to need a few days to fully appreciate everything it has to say about the human condition, but Anomalisa is easily one of the year's best films, a staggering work of emotional cinema that's hilarious, touching, heartbreaking, and joyous all at once. Charlie Kaufman has done it again.

Joss Whedon is Reportedly Working on a New Musical

Joss Whedon had a rough time directing Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron. He previously stated that the movie, "a little bit broke me," which is probably one of the reasons why he didn't come back to direct the next one.

I've been wondering what Whedon's next project would be, and thanks to Den of Geek, we have an idea of what that might be. Last night he apparently told the University of Oxford’s Student Union what he's been working on, and that project is a musical.

This wouldn't be the first time that Whedon has dabbled in musicals. He made Dr. Horrible, which was amazing, as well as the classic Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode "Once More, With Feeling."

There are no details of what the story will be, but he did explain that "the format fits the emotionality of what he’s going for." There are so many different film genres for Whedon to work with, and I'm curious to see what exactly this latest venture of his will turn out to be.

According to the site, the way that Whedon was talking, this is an original idea, and it won't be a sequel to Doctor Horrible, which is something that fans have been impatiently waiting for. Hey — at least he's working on something, and I'm sure it will be great!

How Chevy Chase's Dickish Behavior Turned HOME ALONE Into a Christmas Classic

If Chevy Chase wasn't such a jerk to director Chris Columbus, the 1990 Christmas movie Home Alone might not have become the beloved holiday classic we fondly look back on now. The film is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, and Chicago Magazine put together an oral history that revealed a fascinating what-if scenario for its director.

Writer/producer John Hughes asked Columbus, fresh off the abysmal box office performance of a previous movie, if he wanted to direct National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, which Hughes wrote. Columbus recounts the story:

In 1989, I directed Heartbreak Hotel, and it was a disaster. It opened on a Friday, and by Wednesday it was only playing at two o’clock in the afternoon. Around that time, John Hughes sent me the script for Christmas Vacation. I love Christmas, so to do a Christmas comedy had been a dream. I went out to dinner with Chevy Chase [the movie’s star]. To be completely honest, Chevy treated me like dirt. But I stuck it out and even went as far as to shoot second unit [collecting establishing shots and special sequences, usually without principal actors]. Some of my shots of downtown Chicago are still in the movie. Then I had another meeting with Chevy, and it was worse. I called John [who was producing the film] and said, “There’s no way I can do this movie. I know I need to work, but I can’t do it with this guy.” John was very understanding. About two weeks later, I got two scripts at my in-laws’ house in River Forest. One was Home Alone, with a note from John asking if I wanted to direct. I thought, Wow, this guy is really supporting me when no one else in Hollywood was going to. John was my savior.

Jeremiah Chechik went on to direct Christmas Vacation, which is still a terrific movie despite Chase's off-screen dickishness. (You don't have to look very far to find stories about how Chase can often be a legendary douchebag, ranging from incidents with Bill Murray on the set of Caddyshack to a famous dust-up with Dan Harmon about Community a few years ago.) Columbus, of course, went on to direct Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, Mrs. Doubtfire, and the first two Harry Potter films, but there's a very good chance none of that would have happened had he directed Christmas Vacation instead. (Chechik went on to helm Benny & Joon, 1998's The Avengers, and then mostly stuck to TV after that.) It's an interesting example of one of the millions of alternate universes that could have formed with every decision made in Hollywood, and thankfully, we ended up with two really great Christmas movies because of it.

Here are 9 things you probably didn't know about Home Alone, an Honest Trailer for it, and a gorgeous Mondo art print as well. Merry Christmas, ya filthy animals.

New Details on Lupita Nyong'o's Character Maz Kanata in THE FORCE AWAKENS

Thanks to director J.J. Abrams, we have some new details to share with you about Lupita Nyong'o's character in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The character's name is Maz Kanata and she is a pirate queen. This character was first spotted on the poster for the movie. She's the small alien who is wearing goggles. She also is the character who speaks the following line in the first TV spot:

“I have lived long enough to see the same eyes in different people. I see your eyes. I know your eyes."

Abrams confirmed that in an interview with EW:

“That’s Maz. I had some specific ideas about how she would work and what she would do. I had this pitch about these goggles that she wore. Her eyes are an important aspect of her character, and you’ll see how it plays out.”

The director went on to reveal that Maz had a very long life before settling down in her castle, which includes "a court of misfits and miscreants." This is where she will be found in The Force Awakens.

“Her history is that she was a pirate for a long time. She’s lived over a thousand years. She’s had this watering hole for about a century, and it’s like another bar that you’d find in a corner of the Star Wars universe.

That's all the information that Abrams was willing to dish out, but he does say that we can expect to get eventually get a backstory for her.

“All that backstory will be forthcoming. In the movie, you don’t learn these things, but I know that these are things that are coming out in other venues.”

So I imagine her story will eventually be told in books, comics, and maybe even an animated series? She seems like the kind of character that could easily pop up in Star Wars Rebels somewhere down the road, especially if she's been around that long.

Read Quentin Tarantino's THE HATEFUL EIGHT Prequel Comic

The Hateful Eight hits limited theaters on Christmas Day, which is still a month and a half away. If that wait is too excruciating, I have good news: you can jump into the movie's world right now, albeit in a different medium altogether.

Playboy (via The Film Stage) has announced it will publish a Hateful Eight prequel comic in its issue that hits newsstands tomorrow. Zach Meyer did the illustration, and writer/director Quentin Tarantino himself wrote the dialogue. The comic concentrates on how three of the titular Hateful Eight — John Ruth (Kurt Russell), Major Marquis Warren (Samuel L. Jackson), and Daisy Domergue (Jennifer Jason Leigh) — meet each other on the road just before the events of the film begin. Let us know what you think about it in the comments below!

In The Hateful Eight, set six or eight or twelve years after the Civil War, a stagecoach hurtles through the wintry Wyoming landscape. The passengers, bounty hunter John Ruth (Kurt Russell) and his fugitive Daisy Domergue (Jennifer Jason Leigh), race towards the town of Red Rock where Ruth, known in these parts as “The Hangman,” will bring Domergue to justice. Along the road, they encounter two strangers: Major Marquis Warren (Samuel L. Jackson), a black former union soldier turned infamous bounty hunter, and Chris Mannix (Walton Goggins), a southern renegade who claims to be the town’s new Sheriff. Losing their lead on the blizzard, Ruth, Domergue, Warren and Mannix seek refuge at Minnie’s Haberdashery, a stagecoach stopover on a mountain pass. When they arrive at Minnie’s, they are greeted not by the proprietor but by four unfamiliar faces. Bob (Damian Bichir), who’s taking care of Minnie’s while she’s visiting her mother, is holed up with Oswaldo Mobray (Tim Roth), the hangman of Red Rock, cow-puncher Joe Gage (Michael Madsen), and Confederate General Sanford Smithers (Bruce Dern). As the storm overtakes the mountainside stopover, our eight travelers come to learn they may not make it to Red Rock after all…

THE LEFTOVERS' Margaret Qualley May Join Adam Wingard's DEATH NOTE

$

Adam Wingard (The Guest, You're Next) is prepping his American adaptation of the Japanese manga Death Note for Warner Bros., and the filmmaker may have just found his female lead. THR reports that actress Margaret Qualley, who plays Jill Garvey on HBO's The Leftovers, is in talks to join Paper Towns star Nat Wolff in the movie.

The story, set in major metropolitan American city, centers on a student who discovers a supernatural notebook that allows him to kill anyone by writing the victim's name, who then decides to cleanse the world of whom he deems evil. As the student is tracked by a reclusive police officer, a cat-and-mouse game ensues.

THR doesn't mention what character Qualley is up for, but it seems likely she'd play an American version of Misa Amane, a model who has her own notebook that allows her to kill whoever she wants. I haven't read the original manga but it sounds like there's not much to her other than just being a lovesick girl, so hopefully writer Jeremy Slater (who worked on an early draft of Fantastic Four, long before it turned into the failure we saw in theaters) has given her much more to do in this film version. (And please correct me if I'm wrong in the comments — again, I've never read the manga.) Production is set to get underway this spring, and we'll keep you updated when we hear more about this movie as it moves toward production.

WARCRAFT Director and Stars Talk About Why Orcs Deserve Love As Well

$

Traditionally, orcs are portrayed as the bad guys. They are the embodiment of Evil in nearly every fiction book or film. They are gruesome, awful and repulsive. Orcs are the grotesque characters in fiction. Non-traditionally, though, and in very rare circumstances, these creatures can appear to deserve love too. And this is what we are told to expect from the upcoming Warcraft film.

Robert Kazinsky, who stars as the Orc warrior Orgrim, tells Yahoo:

“What we’ve strived to make here is not a Warcraft movie, but a great war movie. And in every war, on every side, there are good guys and there are bad guys […] That’s kind of the beauty of it. That’s what’s different. We are not telling of good vs. evil vs. the story. The enemy here, and the true evil, is war.”

An exception to the rule, Warcraft depicts two sympathetic sides of the story and both sides have their heroes. Yes — not monsters, but heroes that the audience can equally relate to. There is subtle tenderness and a sort of kindness on display in the trailer which lead us to believe that not every cinematic production has to be about good characters vs. bad ones. Sometimes there’s really more to it than meets the eye: it's called having depth and originality.

Nathan Fielder Interviews The Stars of THE NIGHT BEFORE

If you've seen the Comedy Central series Nathan For You, you know that host Nathan Fielder doesn't shy away from awkward situations — he thrives on them. The actor has a small role in the upcoming Christmas comedy The Night Before, so he sat down to interview the three leads of the film (Seth Rogen, Anthony Mackie, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and as you might have guessed, things get more than a little cringe-worthy. (Although this is obviously Fielder poking fun at the kinds of "awkward" interviews that regularly go viral online.)

This reminded me a lot of Zach Galifianakis' web series Between Two Ferns, with questions about the actors' sexual lives to the wage gap in Hollywood and beyond. My favorite line has to be when he asks Rogen (who's obviously in on the joke, but plays it as if he's really pissed off) if he'll ever play a character that reads a book.

If you aren't familiar with the movie yet, check out the first trailer hereThe Night Before hits theaters on November 20th.

Video Essay: The Evolution of Gotham City

In film, television, comics, games, and beyond, Gotham City is Batman's home. The Dark Knight is inextricably tied to it, drawn to fight its evil forces and continue his "crusade" that gives him one of his many nicknames ("The Caped Crusader"). But even with the live-action Fox TV series currently airing, how often do you really stop to think about Gotham as a city and how it's been depicted over the years?

The Nerdwriter has a new seven minute video that tracks the history of how the city has appeared through the course of its 70 year history, and I think most Batman fans will get a kick out of it.

J.J. Abrams Discusses Luke Skywalker's Mythos in STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

$
0

Luke Skywalker may be absent from most of the marketing for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but this film does continue his story. In another interview with EW, director J.J. Abrams opened up about his role in the story and how many of the characters in the film see him. In fact, it's Luke's story that heavily inspired Abrams to make this movie:

“It was the thing that struck me the hardest, which was the idea that doing a story that took place nearly 40 years after Jedi meant that there would be a generation for whom Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Leia would be as good as myth. They’d be as old and as mythic as the tale of King Arthur. They would be characters who they may have heard of, but maybe not. They’d be characters who they might believe existed, or just sounded like a fairy tale.”

Abrams uses Daisy Ridley as the perfect example and explains how someone in her situation would think of a legend like Luke Skywalker.

“To someone who is living alone and struggling without a formal education or support system, who knows what that person in the literal middle of nowhere would have ever heard about any of these things, or would ever know, and how much that person would have to infer and piece together on their own. So the idea that someone like that would begin to learn that the Jedi were real, and that the Force exists, and that there’s a power in the universe that sounds fanciful but is actually possible, was an incredibly intriguing notion.”

He goes on to talk about the other side of the spectrum. Earlier today we posted an article that talked about what The First Order thinks of Luke, and how they teach their young soldiers that Luke was a villain. So someone like Finn grew up thinking the guy was an asshole that blew up the Death Star and killed the Emperor. Of course that view of Luke changes for Finn over the course of the movie. John Boyega talked a little bit about this:

“For Finn, he’s been raised from the ashes of the Empire. He’s been taught about Luke Skywalker, he knows about his history. For him it’s like joining the army and then learning about one of the great enemies of your country. It has that effect on him. But in terms of the Force, and the magical stuff that happens, that is the point where Finn kind of questions what is what. What is the Force, what part does Luke Skywalker play in all of this?”

I believe that we won't even get to see Luke until the end of the film. It could be the big reveal that gets fan extremely pumped up for Episode VIII. That's just me speculating, I could be way off, but either way, when Mark Hamill shows up on screen, the audience is going to go batshit crazy!

Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens in theaters on December 18th, 2015.

CONJURING 2 Writer Hired to Work on AQUAMAN

Warner Bros. has hired David Leslie Johnson to help director James Wan complete the script for Aquaman. Johnson’s track record doesn’t spark much confidence as he is the same guy who wrote Wrath of the Titans and Red Riding Hood, both of which sucked ass. However, he did work with Wan on The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist, so that might be a plus.

The news comes from THR, who explains that the studio had two separate scripts for the film being developed simultaneously. Those scripts were being worked on by Will Beall (Gangster Squad, The Legend of Conan) and Kurt Johnstad (300, Act of Valor).

The report goes on to say, “What is unclear is the extent of Johnson’s involvement… One source said that Johnson would be a third rail on the development track however several sources said Johnson is working with Wan to streamline the project. Warners had no comment.”

I’m excited that James Wan is going to direct it, but with these screenwriters working on the script I fear for the story, dialogue, and character development. Hopefully, the Aquaman script isn’t as mediocre as these writers' previous work.

Jason Momoa attached to star in the movie, which will be released in 2018.

MONSTERS UNIVERSITY and THE SOCIAL NETWORK Get a Great Mashup Trailer

Pixar’s Monsters University and David Fincher’s The Social Network make for a perfect mashup trailer. It seems like it was a no brainer to combine these two films, and finally some has done it. This mashup trailer was created by Zenlike Productions, and it came with the following note:

While attending Monsters University, two friends were inseparable until their social media platform changed the world--and their friendship--forever.
Starring Mike Wazowski as Mark Zuckerberg, James P. Sullivan as Eduardo Saverin, Terri and Terry as the Winklevoss twins, and Johnny Worthington as Sean Parker.
Editor's note: The audio from the Social Network trailer is completely unchanged--not a single sound effect was added or removed. The end result was accomplished purely through creative editing.

If you’re a fan of these movies, then you're sure to love how this video turned out.

Jared Leto’s on Set Joker Behavior Helped Bond The SUICIDE SQUAD

We’ve heard a lot of fun stories involving Jared Leto’s behavior on the set of Suicide Squad, and apparently in the end it helped bond the squad. You can read the experiences that Will Smith and Margot Robbie had with Leto here and here. Leto himself even talked about his experience, explaining that “it was very painful, like giving birth out of my prick hole."

In an interview with Collider, producer Charles Roven talked about Leto’s method acting to help him actually become The Clown Prince of Crime:

"Look, you know, it was different, it was fun. The group first wasn’t sure because the AD’s had to call him ‘Mr. J’ to get him to come to the set [laughs]. And he did in many ways isolate himself from the rest of the group, but that’s really what his character was, the purpose of his character in many ways, other than when he was with Harley or trying to get Harley. It was very entertaining, it was fuel for a lot of good sport and a lot of laughs, and his isolation bonded the squad, and we wanted the squad bonded.
“I have to say, it was one of the most fun sets ever. I’ve been doing this for a while, and the camaraderie that was built on that set—everybody couldn’t wait for the next day to come back to work.”

I hope the studio shares some of this stuff on the Special Features of the DVD when it’s eventually released. It would be interesting to see a short doc that shows Leto’s decent into Joker madness.

Roven also confirmed that the movie is going to get a PG-13 rating, which is what I expected. Warner Bros. isn’t going to risk an R rating on this thing. They want to see those big box-office numbers.

"The intention of the film is definitely to be PG-13… We really want to make these films tonally consistent so that, as I said because this is a shared universe, at least our current thinking—and again, we’re not dealing in absolutes because while this is business it’s also a creative endeavor, so you want to leave yourself open to changing your mind, doing something different, being inspired, that’s the whole process of filmmaking is you have to allow for inspiration as well as having a road map for what you’re gonna do. So our plan right now is to make all these films PG-13. In some cases, you know, right there on the edge of PG-13, but still PG-13."

Suicide Squad will be released on August 5th, 2016. Here’s to hoping the David Ayer-directed film is just as awesome as it looks!

Lucasfilm Shares More Cool Footage from STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

"Nothing will stand in our way. I'll show them... the dark side."

Last night Lucasfilm and Disney shared a new extended TV spot for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and there's even more new footage for fans of the franchise to enjoy! I know some people are trying to stay away from all this footage, but the cool thing is, the stuff that has been released still doesn't really give anything about the story away.

There are some really great shots in this trailer. A couple of my favorites include Finn beating down on a Stormtrooper with his Lightsaber and the X-Wing squadron in full attack mode as they attack a First Order base. There's a lot more than that, though. You'll just have to watch the spot for yourself to fully enjoy the greatness that it delivers.

There's been a lot of news for The Force Awakens recently, and there's a chance you may have missed something. You can click here to catch up on anything you may have missed. The movie opens on December 18th!

6 Lackluster Character Posters for Alex Proyas’ GODS OF EGYPT

6-lackluster-character-posters-for-alex-proyas-gods-of-egypt

Wow, I completely forgot that director Alex Proyas (The Crow, Dark City) was making an epic Egyptian mythology film called Gods of Egypt. Thanks to these five character posters that Lionsgate released, I was reminded that this movie is in development, and that it might not be that good.

The posters feature Gerard Butler as Set, the God of the desert; Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Horus, the God of the sky; Brenton Thwaites as Bek, the thief of legend; Chadwick Boseman as Thoth, the God of Wisdom; Elodie Yung as Hathor, the Goddess of love; and Abby Lee as Zaya, the beauty of the Nile.

I like Proyas as a director as he’s made some great movies in his career, but these posters definitely aren’t inspiring any confidence in this movie. If studios are going to spend money on posters to help get people pumped up to see their movies, you’d think they’d create something a lot more badass. Especially for a film called Gods of Egypt.

In this spectacular action-adventure inspired by the classic mythology of Egypt, the survival of mankind hangs in the balance as an unexpected mortal hero Bek (Brenton Thwaites) undertakes a thrilling journey to save the world and rescue his true love. In order to succeed, he must enlist the help of the powerful god Horus (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) in an unlikely alliance against Set (Gerard Butler), the merciless god of darkness, who has usurped Egypt’s throne, plunging the once peaceful and prosperous empire into chaos and conflict. As their breathtaking battle against Set and his henchmen takes them into the afterlife and across the heavens, both god and mortal must pass tests of courage and sacrifice if they hope to prevail in the epic final confrontation.

The movie also stars Geoffrey Rush, Rufus Sewell, and Courtney Eaton. Gods of Egypt is set to be released in theaters on February 26th, 2016.

DC Looking to Cast Another Female Superhero in JUSTICE LEAGUE: PART ONE

dc-looking-to-cast-another-female-superhero-in-justice-league-part-one-social.jpg

It appears that Wonder Woman will not be the only female to be in Justice League: Part One. The guys over at Heroic Hollywood have an inside source in who has informed them that DC is looking to fill the role of Mera, Aquaman's significant other.

If you are familiar with Aquaman comics then you know that Mera is probably the most unstable element in his life. She loves him, she hates him, she loves him again, and now she wants to kill him. There is never a dull moment in her life, so it will be exciting to see what part she will play in the Justice League storyline.

HH gives a little insight into what we can expect from Mera in the DC Cinematic Universe:

Mera is considered the Khaleesi of the sea and Aquaman's true love. In the comics, Aquaman as a title in every incarnation had courtly intrigue Game Of Thrones style stuff fighting over the throne. Mera and Aquaman represent feuding factions of Atlanteans and their marriage is the promise of a united Atlantis. The big takeaway is that they're a power duo with a fiery relationship. Mera has been mind controlled against Aquaman or turned against him on multiple occasions. He's been forced to choose between her and his child.

It appears that they have a lot planned for the underwater couple. I am interested to see who they grab for this role. The Justice League cast is pretty strong so far, besides the casting of The Flash, but that is a rant for another time. Anyway, it will be cool to see who will round out the rest of the League.

Do you think that Mera is a good addition to the Justice League movie, or do you feel they should have waited to introduce her in the standalone Aquaman movie in 2018?

Fox Bringing in Doug Liman to Direct GAMBIT

With the departure of Rupert Wyatt, the filming of the X-Men spinoff film Gambit seemed to be on the ropes. Well, it appears that Fox has found the captain for what I consider a sinking ship.

After many meetings, Doug Liman is in final negotiations to take on the card flinging Cajun, which was previously rumored.

Liman definitely has the pedigree to take on what is sure to be an action-packed movie. With movies like Edge of Tomorrow, The Bourne Identity, and Mr. and Mrs. Smith under his belt, Liman certainly has the eye for action. With the full support of Fox and Simon Kinberg, who is producing the film and is said to be heavily involved in the making of this film, what can go wrong?

Like I said earlier, this is a sinking ship. There are a few factors that point in this direction, Liman not being one of them. What I am referring to is the mysterious departure of Wyatt. It first came out that there were scheduling problems and he had other commitments. However, it has been said that Wyatt left over creative differences. THR quoted one studio exec as saying:

"He wants to make the best version of something, and he's so desperately afraid of making something not good."

Honestly, no one wants to see a Gambit movie that is “not good.” Is it the script? Is it the strong studio involvement? Possibly one or both of those reasons. Either one of those issues would break a movie and would cause me to run too.

I am not sure what it is about this project, but it has seemed doomed to me from its inception. Unfortunately, I feel that this is going to be Fantastic Four bad. I guess we will have to wait and see if Liman is the man to bring the Gambit that fans are hoping to see to the big screen.

Does this project have a shot?

If you're a fan of Dragon Ball Z, then this might just be the live-action version you've been waiting for. This is a fan film called "Dragon Ball Z: The Fall of Man," and it's truly an impressively made movie. The epic project comes from BlackSmokeFilms, and it seriously might be the best fan version of the franchise that I think I've seen. It's definitely better than the live-action movie that Hollywood produced a few years back!  Here's the synopsis:

The World isn’t like it’s supposed to be. Something happened along the way.

With these words TRUNKS reminds himself the arrival of CELL, the loss of his friends and his training for combat. While he knows he doesn’t have any chance, he will try to make the difference and bring back the lost hope. This Fan Fiction was born from our desire to adapt DRAGON BALL Z into a film, while adopting a  dramatic and realistic approach.
THE FALL OF MEN is set in different future, inspired by characters of the DBZ saga, this untold story pays tribute to AKIRA TORIYAMA’s universe

After you watch the short, let us know what you think. I hope you all enjoy it!

Steven Moffat Says He Hasn't Cast a New Companion for DOCTOR WHO

Steven Moffat has no idea who the next companion for The Doctor will be, according to the Telegraph. At a three day Doctor Who festival in London the showrunner said they haven't even finished episodes 11 and 12 of the series.

“We went to the BBC yesterday to talk about the type of person we might be looking at. To my unending terror, we have not yet finished episode 11 and episode 12 is nowhere near finished so we haven’t actually delivered the show yet.”

Uh...what? As a fan, this does not instill confidence in me. I have been pretty protective of Moffat for awhile now, but the fact that we are on episode nine and two episodes from now is still unfinished makes me wonder if things are just being made up and reshot. The fact that they haven't even really discussed a new companion doesn't exactly instill confidence either.

I get that Doctor Who is episodic with an overarching story line, but lately it's been far more episodic with not a lot of direction towards the main story theme of The Doctor finding Gallifrey. It sucks because I really love this new season, but I'm really hoping this all doesn't amount to a sloppy payoff near the end...or worse, a Moffat-induced hiatus.
