Patrick Stewart Wishes You a Merry Christmas in CHRISTMAS EVE Trailer

0
0

The first trailer has been released for a new film called Christmas Eve that comes from director Mitch Davis (The Other Side of Heaven) and stars Patrick Stewart (X-Men), Jon Heder (Blades of Glory), Cheryl Hines (Curb Your Enthusiasm), Max Casella (Inside Llewyn Davis), and Gary Cole (Office Space).

I actually really like the concept of this film that centers on six people in New York who end up getting stuck inside elevators on Christmas eve. It looks like a fun holiday feel-good movie. Here’s the synopsis:

When a power outage traps six different groups of New Yorkers inside elevators on Christmas Eve, they find that laughter, romance, and a little holiday magic will get them through – and change their lives in unexpected ways. A heartless real estate tycoon (Patrick Stewart) clings to life in a precarious construction elevator hundreds of feet off the ground. Unexpected relationships bloom for a musician (Cheryl Hines) stuck with her dysfunctional orchestra mates, as well as an aspiring fashion photographer (James Roday) confined with the introverted paralegal in his apartment building (Julianna Guill). A crass HR manager (Max Casella) trapped with an employee he just fired (Jon Heder) and a cynical doctor (Gary Cole) transporting his terminal patient are forced to reconsider the way they think about others in this all-star ensemble comedy that proves that in a city of eight million, you never know who you might get stuck with.

Christmas Eve opens in theaters on December 4th.

With Star Wars: The Force Awakens fast approaching, the Star Wars spirit is in the air. Talented fans are showing their love for the franchise by creating all kinds of art and videos for other fans to enjoy.

Artist Scott Park created this poster art that features several illustrations of the vehicles from the Star Wars universe. This is what he had to say about the piece:

While I have ample room in my heart for all sorts of geeky wonders, it’s no secret that Star Wars will always be my first love. So after much delaying (it’s weirdly daunting to tackle something you adore so much), I finally turned my attention to the vehicles of the Holy Trinity. So I am amazingly excited to present A Long Time Ago - The vehicles of Star Wars. (Almost) Every identifiable vehicle from the Episodes 4, 5 and 6, lovingly illustrated and shown in order of their appearance in the films. You can pick from the Complete Series, with all three movies, or separate posters for each film. I hope you enjoy.

THE GREATEST AMERICAN HERO Series Gets Greenlight from Fox

0
0

Last year it was announced that Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The LEGO Movie, 21 Jump Street) would be developing a new version of the 1981 superhero comedy series The Greatest American Hero. They will be developing a new TV series with Dope writer and director Rick Famuyiwa, and Fox recently gave it a pilot order.

Famuyiwa will write and direct the pilot episode, with Miller and Lord executive producing. According to Deadline, the story will show us “what happens when great power is not met with great responsibility. An ordinary man, completely content with being average, wakes up with a superpower suit he never asked for and has to deal with the complications it brings his life.”

I was a huge fan of the series when I was a kid, and this is a perfect team of talented individuals to bring it to life again.

The original series starred William Katt as a goofy high school teacher who has an alien encounter in the desert one night. He ends up in possession of a red jump suit that gives him superpowers including the ability to fly. He ends up losing the instruction manual for the supersuit, but is persuaded to help fight crime despite his trouble in figuring out how to work the suit.

There’s so much potential for this series, especially with how great TV shows are today. I have high expectations, and I hope they are met.

Video of Benedict Cumberbatch on The Set of DOCTOR STRANGE

This past week, we got to see some photos from the set of Marvel's Doctor Strange, and they featured Benedict Cumberbatch in the lead role roaming the streets of Nepal. You can check out those photos along with some other news about the film here. Now we have a video of the actor as Stephen Strange shooting a scene with director Scott Derrickson. On top of that, there's also a mysterious hooded figure in the video. Could it be The Ancient One?

The photos and stuff that we've been seeing for the film are cool, but I can't wait to see what the actual costume he ends up wearing will look like. We'll find out as we get closer to the film's release date, which is November 4th, 2016. While we wait for that, enjoy the set video!

These Silk Cosplay Photos are Strikingly Cool

These photos of Danica Rockwood rocking this Silk cosplay is pretty damn stunning. The photography was done by David Lee, and the poses and costume that Rockwood is sporting are perfection.

For those of you not familiar with the character, she basically has all the same abilities as Spider-Man. She was created by was created by Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos, and first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man vol. 3 #1 as a faceless cameo. She made her full debut in The Amazing Spider-Man vol. 3 #4  as part of a tie-in to the Original Sin storyline. She now has her comic series, and Silk vol. 1 will come to an end with a "Last Days" story arc that ties into Secret Wars. After that, Silk will star in a second volume of her solo series.

Watch a Great Documentary on the Making of John Carpenter’s THE THING

0
0

A new documentary focuses on John Carpenter’s classic sci-fi horror film The Thing. This movie scared the shit out of me when I first saw it when I was growing up. This film is so incredible in so many ways, especially with the use of practical effects. It’s some of the best that we’ve ever seen on film.

This doc is called The Thing: Terror Takes Shape, and it was created by Daniel Barros. It focuses on the making of the horrific and intense thriller. It basically offers fans everything they ever wanted to know about The Thing, so it’s definitely worth watching when you get a chance.

Boing Boing recently posted a tribute the 1982 film, and had a quote from Richard Kaufman recalling how the movie come out of nowhere, and then over time grew into the awesome cult classic film that it became:

"...it was a failure at the box office and attacked by the critics. Much like 'Blade Runner' (ironically released on the same day), time has been kind to 'The Thing' and it is now recognized for the morbid masterpiece of wretched existential horror that it is.
"It is the anti-'E.T.'
"Nothing to feel good about here, folks.
"And the greatest thing of all is that no one expected it. The trailers gave little away in advance and it showed us things which no one had seen before. There was genuine terror in the theater that night. Social media, YouTube, and bit torrent sites have robbed us of the overwhelming terror of the unexpected."

Now enjoy the doc!

First TV Spot for STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS Offers More New Footage

0
0

"I have lived long enough to see the same eyes in different people."

Lucasfilm and Disney have released the first TV spot for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and it includes even more new footage from the film. Of course, none of that footage features Luke Skywalker. That's ok, though! We all know he's going to show up in the movie! We just don't know exactly how he'll be used in the story yet. I'm really happy that J.J. Abrams and Lucasfilm are keeping that aspect of the story a mystery.

I figured we'd get a few TV spots for the film before it was released in theaters. Hopefully they keep the number of them down, though. Marvel tends to release about twenty of them before they release a movie. I'd be good with two or three for Star Wars

In case you missed the Japanese trailer for the film that was released on Friday, I suggest you check that out there because it's even better than the first trailer that was released. Star Wars: The Force Awakens will hit theaters on December 18th!

Disney and Ellen DeGeneres Team Up to Adapt the Fantasy Book CASTLE HANGNAIL

Disney has picked up the rights to the children’s fantasy book Castle Hangnail, which was written by Ursula Vernon. Ellen DeGeneres is attached to produce the project along side her business partner Jeff Kleeman. I’ve never heard of the book until now, but here are is a description of the story:

The book tells of a 12-year old witch who shows up at a dark castle that needs a master or be decommissioned by the bureaucratic Board of Magic and its many minions, such as a hypochondriac fish and a letter ‘Q’ averse minotaur, dispersed into the world. She projects confidence as she tackles the series of tasks laid forth by the board but underneath lie several simmering secrets, including one of her being an imposter.

This sounds like the kind of fun film that my kids will really enjoy. DeGeneres is currently working on Pixar’s Finding Dory.

The History of Fake Blood in Movies

0
0

When I was a kid I had a lot of fun messing around with fake blood. It was easily accessible, and you could use it to play lots of great pranks, which I excelled at. I learned everything I need to learn from my dad. He played Sweeney Todd in a stage production once when I was a young lad, and he made a custom razor that sprayed blood when he slit a victim's throat in the play. That’s what sold me on the awesomeness of fake blood.

Of course, fake blood is used all the time in the movies. Sometimes it looks great, while other times it turns out looking like crap. One of my favorite blood scenes in a film is easily the elevator blood flood from Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. That was freakin’ terrifying!

I’ve got an interesting video essay for you to check out that takes you through the history of fake blood in cinema. It was created by Filmmaker IQ, who offers the following note with the video:

There are a lot of ways to make the screen bleed - in this course we dissect the history of fake blood from its origins in the Theater to modern recipes for making characters bleed on screen.

This video is worth checking out for anyone who is a film buff.

Chloë Grace Moretz To Star In Live-Action Adaptation of THE LITTLE MERMAID

0
0

Chloe Moretz is set to play the main character in a live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid being produced by Working Title and Universal Pictures. With Disney reimagining all of their fairytales as live-action films, it looks like Universal is going to beat them to punch with The Little Mermaid

The film will be based on the story by Hans Christian Andersen, and the studio is in talks with Richard Curtis (Love Actually) to re-write the script. There are not a lot of details regarding the story for this version of the film, but it will surely follow a mermaid who wished to become human after falling in love with a man she saved from drowning.

Sofia Coppola was attached to direct the movie earlier this year but ended up leaving the project due to creative differences with the studio. The studio has yet to find a replacement. Variety reports that “Coppola’s unwillingness to go with a star like Moretz was her impetus for parting ways with the project.” The report goes on to say that the studio “felt it was smarter to take one more pass at the script with a top-level writer in order to attract the type of talent they want for the project.”

I am curious to see how a studio other than Disney brings this story to life. I’m sure it won’t be as popular without Disney’s magical hand in bringing it to life, but who knows… it might end up surprising people.

What do you think of Moretz taking on the lead role in The Little Mermaid?

First Photo of Chiwetel Ejiofor as Baron Mordo in DOCTOR STRANGE

We've got another photos from the set of Marvel's Doctor Strange for you to check out today. We've already seen photos and video of Benedict Cumberbatch shooting in Nepal as Stephen Strange, but now we have our first look at Chiwetel Ejiofor as Baron Mordo. This is the hooded figure that we saw in the previously released set video.

It was previously reported that Marvel will be switching things up with the character. Even though he’s Doctor Strange's enemy in the comics, it has been explained that you shouldn't "look for him to be necessarily a completely villainous character. Rather, he’s an amalgamation of characters culled from Doctor Strange‘s mythology."

Mordo was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, and here's a more detailed description of Mordo from the comics for those of you not familiar from Marvel Wiki:

Mordo began his tutelage under the Ancient One as early as the 1930's, already an adult; residing in the Ancient One's lair brought him reduced aging. The Ancient One realized that Mordo's lust for power made him dangerous but chose to teach him anyway feeling that he could at least keep a watchful eye on him.
Mordo was immediately resentful of Stephen Strange when he began studying under the Ancient One and magically restrained him from speaking when Strange accidentally walked in on Mordo's plot. The plot failed, Strange became the Ancient One's disciple, and Mordo eventually left.

Doctor Strange also stars Rachel McAdams as the female lead rumored to be one of the Night Nurses; Michael Stuhlbarg as Doctor Nicodemus West; and Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One. Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal) is also in talks for the villain role in the film, which remains a mystery.

Doctor Strange is scheduled to hit theaters November 4th, 2016. To see more images from the set, click here.

SPOILER: Last Name of a Main STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS Character Revealed

0
0

You did read the headline, right? This post does contain a possible major SPOILER. With that second warning out of the way, I'll get right into it.

Shortly after the casting for J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: The Force Awakens was announced and we learned that John Boyega was cast In the film, an acquaintance of mine that works in the entertainment industry told me Boyega would be playing Lando Calrissian's son. It was so early in development, though, that I didn't really believe him. Then when it was revealed that his name was Finn and that he was a Stormtrooper, I buried that Calrissian rumor in the back of my mind... until today.

In a recent description on Amazon for a Finn puzzle, it reveals that Finn actually might be the son of Lando. Here's a screenshot of that puzzle description:

So Finn Calrissian... From what I've seen in the trailer he's not as cool or smooth-talking as his old man was! Billy Dee Williams played Lando in the original films, and there have been rumors that he might show up in Episode VIII. If Finn really is Lando's son then there might actually be some truth about Williams' appearance in the movie.

Of course, there's a chance that this information could be false so let's treat it as a rumor for now. Apparently third party sellers can write anything they want in the description for their products. In the end, it's safe to say that we are going to see relationship connections between old and new characters in the ongoing story of the Star Wars saga.

In case you missed the first TV spot for Star Wars: The Force Awakens that was released over the weekend, click here. The movie will hit theaters on December 18th.

5 Character Posters for ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS

5-character-posters-for-alice-through-the-looking-glass

Last week we got our first full trailer for Disney’s upcoming film Alice Through the Looking Glass, which is a sequel to Tim Butron’s Alice In Wonderland. That trailer was met with a lot of mixed reactions from fans, but for the most part, it seems a lot of people are excited for this next chapter in Alice’s story.

The story follows Alice as she returns to Underland to help save the Mad Hatter from going dark, and this requires an adventure through time. While on her journey, she comes across younger versions of several of the characters that she met in the last film.

This sequel was directed by James Bobin, but Burton is a producer on the project. It's based on characters created by Lewis Carroll, and it stars Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, Mia Wasikowska and Helena Bonham Carter along with the voices of Alan Rickman, Stephen Fry, Michael Sheen, and Timothy Spall. The movie also stars Rhys Ifans as Zanik Hightopp, the Mad Hatter’s father, and Sacha Baron Cohen as Time, a peculiar creature who is part human, part clock.

The movie will be released on May 27th, 2016.

First Photo and Poster The GHOST IN THE SHELL Theatrical Play

first-photo-and-poster-the-ghost-in-the-shell-theatrical-play

Did you know that there was a theatrical play in production based on the Ghost in the Shell anime and manga? Me neither, until I came across this first look photo and poster for it on Kotaku. Apparently the GiTS stage play recently opened up in Tokyo.

It’s called Ghost in the Shell Arise: Ghost is Alive. It’s an officially licensed play, and I totally would love to see it! I'm curious to see what the production value is like and how the story is told.

As you know, DreamWorks is currently developing a Ghost in the Shell movie with Scarlett Johansson. It's being written by Straight Outta Compton screenwriter Jonathan Herman and directed by Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman). The movie will be released on March 31st, 2017.
