New STAR TREK Series In Development at CBS

Another Star Trek series is currently in development at CBS, and it's being developed by Alex Kurtzman, who has worked on the previous two films directed by J.J. Abrams. The series will arrive just in time for the 50th anniversary of the franchise.

The new series was picked up straight to series by CBS, and it is slated to premiere in January of 2017. According to THR, the new Star Trek show will "introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966."

That's all of the information we have to go on so far, but it great to know that Star Trek will be coming back to the small screen. The last Star Trek TV series was saw was Star Trek: Enterprise, which ran from 2001 to 2005. I actually really enjoyed that series and was bummed out when it was cancelled.

Marc DeBevoise, executive VP and GM at CBS Digital Media, had this to say in a statement:

"This new series will premiere to the national CBS audience, then boldly go where no first-run Star Trek series has gone before — directly to its millions of fans through CBS All Access. We’ve experienced terrific growth for CBS All Access, expanding the service across affiliates and devices in a very short time. We now have an incredible opportunity to accelerate this growth with the iconic Star Trek, and its devoted and passionate fan base, as our first original series.”

I'm looking forward to learning more about what this upcoming Star Trek series will entail. We'll keep you updated on any additional news about the series as it becomes available.

Will Hugh Jackman Appear in X-MEN: APOCALYPSE After All?

Hugh Jackman has made it very clear that the last time he'll be donning the adamantium claws of Logan/Wolverine is going to be in director James Mangold's next Wolverine solo movie. But how about one more quick appearance before that film gets underway?

Jackman's participation (or lack thereof) in Bryan Singer's upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse has been the source of a bunch of rumors and speculation over the past few months, and the actor has hinted at maybe popping up in the new movie, but we still haven't received any hard evidence that he'll show up. Now Le Journal De Montreal is reporting that Jackman "will be on hand" for some planned reshoots of the film, seemingly confirming his involvement with the production.

But how big will his role be? Will this be another X-Men: First Class scenario, in which he shows up for only a quick cameo? Or, coming off of the very Wolverine-heavy Days of Future Past, will Singer continue that trend and include him in a larger capacity? Or might he even be just showing up for a post-credits scene that leads into the next Wolverine movie, much like how The Wolverine ended with a teaser for Days of Future Past? We don't have answers to those questions, but the fact that he's going to be on set should be enough for fans of the character to get their hopes up a little bit. X-Men: Apocalypse hits theaters on May 27, 2016.

Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshiped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.

Trailer For SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK Documentary

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark was one of my favorite books series to read when I was a kid. I freakin' love those crappy-ass stories that would keep my brothers and I up at night.

There's been a feature film adaptation of these books in the works for a few years. When the project was first announced, Saw writers Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunston were set to write the script, and then last year John August (Big Fish, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride) was brought on board to start from scratch on the project. Since then, there's been no other information about it.

I'm curious to see how it turns out. I have an idea on how I would make the film, but I doubt they'd go that route because it would make too much sense. I would do an animated anthology film. Basically take some of the best stories and adapt them for the big screen in the same terrifying art style from the book series. That's what I'd want to see.

While we wait to see what August's plan is for the film, there's a new documentary that's coming out that focuses on the horror book series. The doc is called Scary Stories and it is being directed by Cody Meirick.

We have a trailer for that doc for you to watch today, and it dives into the history and legacy of the book. I had such a huge impact on a generation of kids, and the film focuses on that generation of kids who fell in love with these insanely dark terrifying tales.

Scary Stories: A Documentary will explore the history and background of one of the most controversial works of modern children’s literature. In the 1980s and 1990s in elementary libraries across the United States these books developed a growing interest from boys and girls who were taken in by the gothic tales, the whimsical tone, and the ghostly illustrations. Now the Scary Stories book series stands as the most challenged children’s book of the last 30 years and a testament to the power of something that is often taken for granted: a good scary story.

The original book series was written by Alvin Schwartz and the insanely awesome illustrations were created by Stephen Gammell. Those illustrations are such a main staple of the book that it would be a shame if the movie wasn't animated in that style.

There's no word on when this documentary will come out, but we'll keep you updated on it. Enjoy the trailer!

The Bat From THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Sideshow Collectibles Toy Review

For those of you looking for the ultimate collectible toy from The Dark Knight Rises, look no further because Hot Toys has created a 1/12th scale collectible of Batman’s flying vehicle The Bat. Sideshow Collectibles sent one over to me for review, and this thing is insanely badass!

The Bat is easily one of the best collectible vehicles that Sideshow has to offer. I knew it was going to be cool, I just didn’t how awesome it would actually be. As soon as the giant box arrived at the door, it was like Christmas morning, and I immediately turned into a ten-year-old kid. I carried the box into my apartment and tore right into it!

There’s a little assembly required for The Bat, but not as much as I was expecting. It took me about an hour or so to put it together, but I took my time inspecting the pieces and making sure I did everything right. I’m not the kind of guy that enjoys putting things together, but this was actually a pretty easy and painless process.

Once it was put together, all I wanted to do was run around my place playing with it like a kid. Of course, that’s not the kind of toy that it is. This is a collectible to show off to your friends and family and make them all jealous that you have one and they don’t. It’s a beautiful decorative piece for any geek lair.

The details on this thing is immaculate. After I got it, I watched The Dark Knight Rises again and then paused certain scenes to compare the collectible with the actual movie design. Hot Toys completely nailed it! You can see for yourself in the collection of photos that I took of it below.

I took The Bat to a local toy shop that a friend of mine owns and I took the photos there because I needed a fun geeky atmosphere. As I was taking pictures, I was bombarded by people who were walking around the shop basking in its glory. I had about 30 to 40 people come up to me in the space of a two-hour period looking at it and talking about how amazing it was.

On top of its cool look though, The Bat also came with a remote control that you could use to turn on and off the LED lights, the underside propellers, and the dual rotors. I included a video so you can see all that stuff in action. Needless to say, I had a lot of fun playing with this thing as I got to take pictures. It even came with a 1/12th scale Batman figure that can sit in the cockpit.

If you are a fan of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, and you liked the design of The Bat, then this is a must-own item! This thing kicks ass on so many levels.

If you want to purchase one, you can order it on Sideshow Collectibles. It might be a little pricey, but after handling this thing, and seeing how people react to it, it’s totally worth it!

I included the specs and details of The Bat below the photos.

Mark Ruffalo Says a Solo Hulk Movie "Feels Even Further Away" Than Before

$

I'll have a review of Spotlight for you later this week, but while star Mark Ruffalo was doing some press for the movie, he spoke with USA Today about the topic everyone seems to ask him these days: what's the deal with a standalone Hulk movie? Well, he said it's "not any closer" to happening, and then elaborated a bit:

"Actually, it feels even further away. It's not Marvel's property, it's Universal's property. I don't know. It seems really problematic."

That would be a big problem, if it were true. But as we found out a few months ago, Marvel actually does own the production rights to a solo Hulk movie, so it is that company's property. The only thing Universal has is the right of first refusal for the distribution rights to any solo Hulk film. What that means is that if Marvel Studios made a Hulk film, Universal could choose to distribute it and split some of the money with Marvel in the process. They could also choose to decline and give the distribution rights back to Marvel for free, but since that's incredibly unlikely, there'd probably be some sort of trade involved with Universal and Marvel's parent company, Disney. Either way, Marvel Studios produced Iron Man, Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, and Iron Man 2 but those movies were distributed by Paramount; while a scenario in which Universal distributed a solo Hulk movie wouldn't be ideal for Marvel Studios, the company has clearly shown a willingness to collaborate where necessary to get things done. (Another example: the Sony/Spider-Man deal.)

Ruffalo is next slated to appear as the Hulk in Thor: Ragnarok, and he spoke briefly about that as well:

"I don't know what the story is yet, but it'll be (Loki) and Thor, and then I'll be in there here and there. But I don't know any of the particulars quite yet. I've talked to Taika a little bit and I like where it's headed. ... Chris (Hemsworth) and I have a really good time together, we goof off and play around when Tom Hiddleston is around. So it'll be a lot of funny back-and-forth, especially with Taika, he does that really well. It'll have that kind of antagonistic Odd Couple-thing going on."

I know a lot of people (Ruffalo included) want to see the Hulk have adventures in space in his own movie, but Kevin Feige knows that the character works best in smaller doses right now. There's a reason there's a ton of goodwill toward the character that's been built up since 2008's The Incredible Hulk, and I'm guessing some of that has to do with the fact that we haven't had a full-length Hulk movie disappoint us with Ruffalo in the lead. We'll see how long the studio takes to eventually make a solo film, but in the meantime, I'm totally fine with seeing him work as a sidekick type of character. What do you all think?

3 Incredible Joker Halloween Costume Designs By Oscar-Winning Makeup Artist Rick Baker

Special effects artist Rick Baker officially retired this year, but that didn't stop him from going all out for his family this Halloween. The 7-time Oscar-winner transformed his daughter Veronica into The Joker from The Killing Joke; his daughter Rebecca was done up to look like Heath Ledger's Joker from The Dark Knight, Baker made himself up to be The Joker from Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo's Death of the Family; his wife Silvia dressed up as Harley Quinn; and Rebecca's boyfriend was made to look like Gwynplaine (played by Conrad Veidt) from the 1928 film The Man Who Laughs, which is the character most cited as the inspiration for The Clown Prince of Crime.

It must be pretty damn cool to be a part of the Baker family, especially during Halloween!

Final Trailer For IN THE HEART OF THE SEA Pits Chris Hemsworth Against Moby Dick

Warner Bros. has unleashed the final trailer for the epic film adaptation of In the Heart of the Sea. I wasn't particularly blown away by the previous trailers, but this one looks like a return to the kind of stunning visual filmmaking that director Ron Howard used to be known for. That score goes a long way in helping make this seem like a sweeping, dramatic experience, and with a cast that includes Chris Hemsworth, Benjamin Walker, Cillian Murphy, Tom Holland, Ben Whishaw, and Brendan Gleeson, it seems like Howard has another winner on his hands here.

Perhaps George Costanza said it best: "The sea was angry that day, my friends." Check out the new trailer below, and mark your calendars for December 11th, when this film will be released.

"No matter who you are, there’s a soldier in all of us."

We've got an epically fun live-action commercial for Call of Duty: Black Ops III for you to check out today, and this thing is both action-packed and amusing. These live-action video game commercials just seem to get more and more awesome! It shows us what the possibilities could be for any live-action films that will eventually get made based on these kinds of games. They put a lot of work into these ads, and it'd be nice to see that same amount of work put into their movies.

This new advertisement features Creed star Michael B. Jordan, Super Bowl winner Marshawn Lynch, and Suicide Squad actress Cara Delevingne, who looks insanely badass. The commercial was directed by Wayne McClammy and it follows a regular guy named Kevin as he wall-runs, thrust jumps, and power slides through enemies and zombies on his way to glory.

Call of Duty: Black Ops III arrives globally on November 6th, 2015.

Charlie Kaufman's Stop-Motion ANOMALISA Gets Its First Trailer

$

I've been looking forward to Anomalisa ever since I heard about the movie's Kickstarter campaign a few years ago. The stop-motion movie is co-directed by Charlie Kaufman (the writer of Being John Malkovich, Adaptation., and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) and Duke Johnson (who directed the Community episode "Abed's Uncontrollable Christmas"), and aside from Mad Max: Fury Road — a film that couldn't be more different than this one — I can't remember the last time critics have gushed about a movie like this. It played the festival circuit earlier this year, and Paramount is releasing it in select theaters starting December 30th, which will allow it to qualify for the Oscars and compete against Inside Out in the Best Animated Feature category. (That should be very interesting.)

Check out the trailer below, and see what all the fuss is about:

Michael Stone, husband, father and respected author of "How May I Help You Help Them?," is a man crippled by the mundanity of his life. On a business trip to Cincinnati, where he's scheduled to speak at a convention of customer service professionals, he checks into the Fregoli Hotel. There, he is amazed to discover a possible escape from his desperation in the form of an unassuming Akron baked goods sales rep, Lisa, who may or may not be the love of his life.

STAR WARS Fan Theory Pegs Jar Jar Binks as The Most Evil Mastermind in The Galaxy

$
0
0

Recently, I wrote about a Batman v Superman "rumor" that's a good example of how fan theories can go too far. For me, it's all about the tone of these things. By nature, a lot of theories necessitate inventing aspects of what might have happened off screen and occasionally denying factual evidence in order to make them work, but when someone goes as far as to claim that their theory is the end-all be-all one and only truth, the tone goes from being a fun alternate reading of a movie into willful ignorance.

But here's a fun theory that, even though it claims Jar Jar Binks will show up in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, does so in a lighthearted way that doesn't position it as an actual rumor that people should take seriously. So let's get to it.

Jar Jar is, deservedly, the most hated character in Star Wars history. But Redditor Lumpawarroo has a different idea about him than everyone else:

Here I will seek to establish that Jar Jar Binks, far from being simply the bumbling idiot he portrays himself as, is in fact a highly skilled force user in terms of martial ability and mind control.
Furthermore, I assert that he was not, as many people assume, just an unwitting political tool manipulated by Palpatine-- rather, he and Palpatine were likely in collaboration from the very beginning, and it's entirely possible that Palpatine was a subordinate underling to Binks throughout both trilogies.
And finally, given the above, I will conclude with an argument as to why I believe it is not only possible, but plausible that Jar Jar will make a profound impact on the upcoming movies, and what his role may be.

I'll quickly break down a few of the points made here. First up, Jar Jar's spastic movements (especially on the battlefield) isn't the result of cowardice or dumb luck — he's actually using a fighting technique similar to Drunken Fist wushu. And while the movies don't explicitly state that he's a Force user, there's a surprising amount of evidence that shows he knows exactly what he's doing, going as far as to manipulate his way into the Galactic Senate and becoming buddy-buddy with Palpatine.

There's even a section that talks about how, if this theory was true and Jar Jar was better received in the first movie, that character could have fought Yoda in Attack of the Clones and added to the whole thematic "rhyming" that George Lucas wanted to put in place between the prequels and the original trilogy.

The whole thing is absolutely worth a read, because the logic and evidence presented is almost enough to convince me it's true. This is the kind of fan theory I can get behind: something that recontextualizes what we think we know in a fun way that doesn't take itself too seriously or present its claims as indisputable fact. What do you think?

Michael Stuhlbarg in Talks to Join Marvel's DOCTOR STRANGE

$

0

Kevin Feige has been wanting to make a Doctor Strange film for years, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe has finally expanded to include enough out-there material (Guardians of the Galaxy, anyone?) for Marvel Studios to be able to put some "mind-bending weirdness" in Phase 3.

Variety reports that Michael Stuhlbarg (A Serious Man, Steve Jobs, Men in Black 3) is in talks to join the movie, and he will reportedly play Nicodemus West, who's described by the outlet as "a rival scientist" of Benedict Cumberbatch's Stephen Strange. But Marvel's wikia paints a slightly different picture:

Dr. Nicodemus West was a long time admirer of Dr. Stephen Strange's surgical abilities. Dr. West performed the surgery that saved Strange's hands but leaving him with severe nerve damage following his automobile accident. Racked with guilt over robbing the world of Strange's medical service, Nicodemus followed Strange to Kamar-Taj arriving only days after Strange had completed his mystical training and departed. Concerned that Strange may not rise to the challenge of becoming the Sorcerer Supreme, the Ancient One elected to begin training Nicodemus in the mystic arts. After learning some of the essentials of mystic healing, Nicodemus departed Kamar-Taj without completing his training.

Sounds like that could be a dramatic, complex relationship if they stick close to the comics, but Marvel Studios has shown that they're willing to diverge from the source material in order to tell the best story they can on film, so Stuhlbarg may end up playing a version of this character we haven't seen before.

Rachel McAdams is on board as the female lead, Tilda Swinton will play The Ancient One, and Chiwetel Ejiofor is set to star as Baron Mordo. Scott Derrickson is directing from a script by Jon Spaihts, and Doctor Strange will hit theaters on November 4th, 2016.

The Force Was With Neil Patrick Harris and His Family This Halloween

A long time ago in a Halloween far, far away…

There are bad actors, good actors, funny actors, actors who always surprise us, actors who never do, actors who are, well…just there, and then, there is Barney Stinson. Oh, I mean Neil Patrick Harris. Some actors just stick to their characters and are immortalized through their fictional names, aren’t they? Harrison Ford will be best remembered as Indiana Jones or Han Solo, Daniel Radcliffe is most commonly known as Harry Potter, Antonio Banderas as Puss in Shrek (just kidding here), and so on.

And to be perfectly honest, whenever I see Neil Patrick Harris in a movie, I always refer to him as Barney Stinson – the ultimate women’s heartbreaker! However, he has proven on more than one occasion that in real life he is the opposite of his fictional self.

Along with his partner, David Burtka, and their children, they manage to impress with their stunning Halloween costumes every year. This year, The Force seemed to be with the family, as they revealed a photo featuring them dressed up as some of our favorite Star Wars characters. So, we have Neil Patrick Harris as Obi-Wan Kenobi, David Burtka as Han Solo, Harper Grace as Princess Leia, and finally Gideon Scott Burtka-Harris as young Luke Skywalker.

To prove you how “LEGEN wait-for-it DARY” Harris’ family is, take a look at their Halloween photos from the past four years.

Syfy Making Female-Led VAN HELSING TV Show

$

Continuing the trend of gender-swapped heroes, Syfy has acquired a female-led Van Helsing TV series that will focus on Vanessa Van Helsing, the daughter of the vampire hunting character who faced off against Dracula.

In this new interpretation, the central character is now a female, Vanessa Helsing, the next in a lineage of warriors who must lead mankind against a world controlled by vampires. When Vanessa is resurrected five years in the future, she learns vampires have taken over the world and that she possesses unique power over them. She is essentially humanity’s last hope to lead an offensive to take back what has been lost.

THR has the news, and they also report that the show is going to be run by an unlikely person: notable playwright Neil LaBute, who famously wrote and directed the remake of The Wicker Man that featured one of Nicolas Cage's most batsh*t-crazy performances. He released a statement commenting on the new show:

"I am extremely excited to be working with Syfy and Nomadic Pictures to create a unique, character-driven action series that will move the traditional vampire tropes into bold and unexpected new territories” LaBute said in a statement. “This is a wonderful chance for us to forge great stories and unforgettable characters and throw them into a world where the stakes – both dramatic and personal – are tremendously high."

No word yet on whether or not this will have any impact on the (and I swear this is real) long-gestating live-action film reboot that's supposed to star Tom Cruise.

Production will start in January and the 13-episode first season will debut in fall of 2016. I'm not well-versed in Dracula and vampire lore (and I never saw the Hugh Jackman-led Van Helsing film from 2004), so I'll leave this one to the true fans to discuss in the comment section. What do you think about a female-led Van Helsing series?

Mark Hamill Wants Dying Fan to See STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS Early

The 2009 film Fanboys is about a group of friends who try to break into Skywalker Ranch in order to steal a rough cut of The Phantom Menace and watch it before their cancer-stricken friend dies. And while this isn't exactly the same thing, it's hard to ignore the parallels between that movie and the story of Daniel Fleetwood, a Star Wars fan diagnosed with cancer who told KPRC 2 Houston (via Uproxx) "judging by how progressive the disease has gotten in the past two months, I really don’t think that I’ll be able to make it" until the movie officially comes out on the night of December 17th.

Daniel has already surpassed the expectations of his doctors, who told him in July that he'd only have two months to live, but the super fan's dying wish is to see The Force Awakens before he passes away. On October 30th, he earned the support of one of the film's stars: Mark Hamill himself retweeted the following link:

It should be mentioned that director J.J. Abrams granted a similar request to a dying fan back in 2013 when Star Trek Into Darkness came out; we'll have to see if his Disney overlords are as sympathetic as the ones at Paramount were a couple of years ago. Good luck, Daniel — we're pullin' for you.

RISE OF THE TOMB RAIDER Launch Trailer

Nicole Kidman Might Play an Amazonian Warrior in WONDER WOMAN

$

0

It's becoming increasingly difficult to name an A-list actor who hasn't appeared in a comic book movie, and there are plenty more films coming up in the next few years that are going to make that task even tougher. Nicole Kidman already has one comic book film under her belt — she played Dr. Chase Meridian in Batman Forever — and now The Wrap reports that the Aussie Oscar winner is in "ongoing negotiations" to play "a high-ranking Amazonian warrior alongside Gal Gadot" in Wonder Woman.

Kidman's role isn't confirmed yet, but The Wrap speculates (or at least implies) that she may be playing Hippolyta, the Queen of the Amazons and Diana Prince's biological mother. I'm not sure what script looks like and what direction they're taking the film (though these details hint at the scope), but on the surface, Kidman seems like a good fit. Monster director Patty Jenkins is directing Wonder Woman, which hits theaters on June 23, 2017. Gadot will reprise her role as the title character (she'll first appear in next year's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), and Chris Pine is playing her love interest, Steve Trevor. Eva Green and Sean Bean may play the villains, so this cast is certainly shaping up to be worthy of the long delay fans have had to endure as they wait for this character to finally get her due on the big screen.

Watch: 10 STAR WARS Movie Scenes You've Never Seen

The creativity of George Lucas's Star Wars inspired a level of fanaticism that redefined what being a fan truly meant. Not only were people captivated by the world building, the special effects, and the storytelling, but it also galvanized multiple generations of would-be filmmakers to follow their dreams and become directors, cinematographers, FX artists, actors, and writers. I imagine a decent chunk of the GeekTyrant readership would classify themselves as massive Star Wars fans, and the rest would at least acknowledge a passing appreciation for the films. But only the most diehard fans probably know about all ten of these scenes from the franchise that ended up on the cutting room floor.

ScreenRant is back with a new video, and as someone who likes the movies but never devoted my childhood to playing with every toy or writing my own fan fiction, this was all new information to me. Maybe some of these will be new for you, too. Sound off in the comments and let us know how many of these moments you already knew about.

That first episode of Ash Vs. Evil Dead sure was something. Most fans seemed to love what it had to offer. It’s totally on par with the films in the franchise. I'm seriously looking forward to seeing how the adventures of our heroes turn out in this first season. Starz has released a promo giving us a little glimpse of what we will see in the second episode titled “Bait,” and here’s a brief plot summary for it:

Special Agent Fisher (Jill Marie Jones) is tracking Ash (Bruce Campbell). Pablo (Ray Santiago) gets his first taste of blood in a manic battle, and a revelation changes Kelly’s (Dana Delorenzo) life forever.

What did you think of the first episode?
