Pitch Perfect 3 became inevitable after the success of the second movie, and we already know that stars Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, and Brittany Snow are returning to reprise their roles for writer Kay Cannon. One of the big questions remaining was who would direct the third film, and now Variety has confirmed that franchise star and Pitch Perfect 2 director Elizabeth Banks will return to those duties for this next sequel.
I thought Banks did a good job with the second film (I liked it better than the original), so it'll be nice to see her return to a franchise she obviously has a lot of affection for. I'm also glad the success of the second movie (it made over $285 million worldwide on a $29 million budget) has opened up other options for the filmmaker: she's in talks to direct both Charlie's Angels and an adaptation of a young adult novel called Red Queen.
Pitch Perfect 3 has a release date scheduled for August 4th, 2017, so they have plenty of time to get the script written and figure out whether any other original cast members (or PP2 alum Hailee Steinfeld) will return before filming begins.
