A Security Guard Has a Hellish Night in Horror Comedy Short - DOWNSTAIRS

The first time I saw the horror comedy short Downstairs was this past summer when I was covering the FilmQuest Film Festival. I thought it was a lot of fun, and after doing a little digging around I found it online, so now you can watch it for yourself! It has a great security guard character who is put in a creepy and suspenseful situation when he goes to investigate something downstairs when he knows damn well he shouldn't. The movie has a perfect mix of humor and horror that kind of reminded me of Evil Dead. This is the brief synopsis that came with the short:

A foolhardy security guard has the night from Hell, when his curiosity sends him investigating what goes on... Downstairs...

The movie was directed by Lee Boxleitner and it was voted one of the top five short films at ScreamFest 2014 by besthorrormovies.com. It was also the winner of Best Short Film at Dark Scream UK. I hope you all enjoy it!

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES Full Trailer: This Movie Now Has My Attention

I've never read Seth Grahame-Smith's Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and I've somehow missed all of the marketing for the film adaptation so far, but when the movie was announced, I rolled my eyes at the concept and thought it'd be just another silly zombie movie with nothing to offer outside of its goofy premise. But this full trailer for the film reveals that there's much more going on here than just slicing through the undead.

For whatever reason, the concept of modern feminism is still lost on some people, but I think it's great that even a movie with an outlandish premise like this appears to be an empowering film for women. In the current Hollywood landscape, in which female characters are often nothing more than objects of the male lead's affection or sidelined with little to no bearing on the plot, it's cool to see a movie that gives a bunch of women the ability to kick ass while not overtly sexualizing them at the same time. Sure, this is just a trailer, and we won't know how the film itself actually handles these ideas until we see it in its entirety, but even a trailer that does something as simple as proudly giving women some agency sadly seems almost revolutionary right now. This is a step in the right direction, and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies suddenly became a lot more interesting to me.

The film hits theaters on February 5th, 2016.

Famous Movie Scenes Recreated With Balloon Art

Artists recreate their favorite scenes from movies all the time, but I don't think I've ever seen a recreation using balloon art before. But magician and artist Robbie Driscoll has taken the form to a whole new level with his work on My Daily Balloon, crafting imitations of some iconic scenes from films like Lady and the Tramp, Mission: Impossible, Spider-Man, and more, as well as reimagining some posters while he's at it. Take a look at a few examples below:

All this talk about balloon art reminds me of that scene from Wedding Crashers: "Make me a bicycle, clown!"

Joe Cornish and Shane Black on The List of Directors to Helm GAMBIT

20th Century Fox and Channing Tatum have been on the hunt for a new director for Gambit ever since Rupert Wyatt bailed last month over creative differences. A few days ago, it was reported that Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman was in the running to helm the movie. According to Heroic Hollywood, two new names have been added to the list of potential directors.

Their inside sources tell them that the studio is also looking at Joe Cornish and Shane Balck to take on the project. All three directors who are up for the gig are great choices. Cornish directed the incredible sci-fi adventure film Attack the Block and he also worked on the script for Marvel's Ant-Man with Edgar Wright. Black most recently directed Iron Man 3, and he's currently developing a new Predator film.

Out of all these choices, my number one pic would be Cornish because I've been waiting for him to make another film! For some odd reason, he hasn't directed a film since Attack the Block, which came out back in 2011. After a film like that, you'd think he'd be in high demand to direct all kinds of projects. I'd be fine if any of these directors landed the job, though.

Josh Zetumer wrote the script for Gambit, which is based on a treatment by Gambit co-creator Chris Claremont.

We all knew it would eventually happen, and here it is. The video below is a supercut of every trailer that's been released for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. This might very well be all of the footage that we see of the film until the movie is released on December 18th.

The video was sent into us by its creator Science Vs. Cinema, and it's really well done. It's awesome seeing all of this footage combined in one ultimate trailer for the film. To check out all of the other Star Wars: The Force Awakens stuff that we've previously posted, click here.

After already buying my tickets for the film, it feels like I should be seeing it this weekend. December 18th seems so far away!

I also included another cut of the trailers that was created by 3D-Station:

Universal Developing QUEEN OF HEARTS, About Younger Version of The ALICE IN WONDERLAND Villain

As Disney prepares its Alice in Wonderland sequel Through The Looking Glass, a rival studio is also getting ready to head down the rabbit hole.

Deadline reports that Universal Pictures is developing a movie called Queen of Hearts that's based on Colleen Oakes' young adult novel. Here's the synopsis of the book:

As Princess of Wonderland Palace and the future Queen of Hearts, Dinah's days are an endless monotony of tea, tarts, and a stream of vicious humiliations at the hands of her father, the King of Hearts. The only highlight of her days is visiting Wardley, her childhood best friend, the future Knave of Hearts--and the love of her life. When an enchanting stranger arrives at the Palace, Dinah watches as everything she's ever wanted threatens to crumble. As her coronation date approaches, a series of suspicious and bloody events suggests that something sinister stirs in the whimsical halls of Wonderland. It's up to Dinah to unravel the mysteries that lurk both inside and under the Palace before she loses her own head to a clever and faceless foe. Part epic fantasy, part twisted fairy tale, this dazzling saga will have readers shivering as Dinah's furious nature sweeps Wonderland up in the maelstrom of her wrath. Familiar characters such as Cheshire, the White Rabbit, and the Mad Hatter make their appearance, enchanting readers with this new, dark take on Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. But be warned...not every fairytale has a happy ending. This is the story of a princess who became a villain.

So it's yet another origin story about a well-known character. With the success of Disney's Maleficent and the Broadway mega-hit Wicked, it's no wonder Universal has its eye on trying to replicate something similar with an origin story of its own, and they probably see the fact that it has that young adult angle to it as an added bonus. Of course, the book has sequels, with a third one planned for a 2018 release. The studio has just hired Grant Pierce Myers to write the screenplay, and he has experience in the YA genre having written script for The Maze Runner, so it seems like all the pieces are coming together for this one. Grab a good director and a strong cast, and this has a chance to rise above its cliched premise.

The Black Ranger Has Been Cast in POWER RANGERS

The casting announcements for Lionsgate's Power Rangers movie continue. The studio has revealed that Monster Hunt actor Ludi Lin will be playing the Black Ranger in the movie. He will join Naomi Scott, who has been cast in the role of the Pink Ranger, and Dacre Montgomery, who is taking on the part of the Red Ranger.

Monster Hunt is a crazy-looking Chinese film that I haven't seen yet, but I want to! You can watch the trailer for that movie here

Dean Israelite (Almanac) is directing Power Rangers from a script by Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz. The story reimagines the origins of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, a group of high school kids given extraterrestrial powers who unite to save the world.

We've posted some additional possible details about the film that you can read about here if you want. Power Rangers hits theaters on January 13th, 2017. Here's the official announcement that was posted on Twitter.

Disney Characters Lose Their Minds Reacting to THE FORCE AWAKENS Trailer

We've seen a couple different versions of the newest Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer already: one that concentrates on the music and one that adds footage from the earlier trailers into one long trailer. But here's one from World Wide Interweb that shows how Lucasfilm's Disney brethren react when they "watched" the trailer themselves. Aside from the bit involving Ariel in the beginning, I think the rest of these reactions work really well:

NBC's EMERALD CITY Casts Vincent D'Onofrio as The Wizard of Oz

$

There was a time, not too long ago, in which it seemed like practically every TV network had a show in development based on The Wizard of Oz. Thankfully, we haven't heard much about many of those shows going forward, but NBC's Emerald City is one that actually has some momentum behind it.

The show is said to be in the vein of Game of Thrones. Deadline describes it like this:

Swept up into the eye of a tornado, 20-year-old Dorothy Gale is transported to another world — a mystical land in great peril, where an all-powerful Wizard has outlawed magic and rules over the many kingdoms. This is the fabled Land of Oz in a way you’ve never seen before — where lethal warriors roam, wicked witches plot in the shadows and a young girl from Kansas becomes the headstrong hero who holds the fate of their world in her hands.

Adria Arjona will play Dorothy, and Deadline says that Vincent D'Onofrio has been cast as the Wizard, "a man of science in a world of magic [who] rules through inspiration, fear and a tenuous accord with the grand witches." Sounds like solid casting to me, and I wonder if those who really liked D'Onofrio's performance as The Kingpin on Daredevil will give this show a shot simply to see what he does in this role.

But even with D'Onofrio on board, a network show that puts its own spin on The Wizard of Oz can't be that interesting, right? Well, not if the director has anything to say about it. That director? Tarsem Singh, who directed D'Onofrio in The Cell. We're still in the early days on this series, but that reunion is appealing and just might be what ends up making this show watchable.

The Fine Brothers Recap The Entire History of PEANUTS in Five Minutes

I'm surprisingly looking forward to The Peanuts Movie. Featurettes rarely change my mind about whether or not I want to see something, but this one actually did. As long as the script is good, I think the CG adaptation of Charles M. Schulz's comic strip could be something very special.

Just in time for the movie's November 6th release, The Fine Brothers are here with a five minute recap of the entire Peanuts franchise, including the origins of Schulz's early versions of the characters, all of the various movies and TV specials the characters have starred in over the years, and Schulz's legacy after his death.

Intriguing New Trailer For Amazon's THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE

I was very impressed with the first trailer for the Amazon Prime series The Man in the High Castle, based on Philip K. Dick's novel, and now the streaming service is back with a new look at the show. The series takes place in an alternate reality in which the Axis powers won World War II and have occupied America, but there's a mysterious film reel going around that fuels a revolution because of its world-shattering content. The show certainly looks impressive (no surprise, considering Ridley Scott's involvement as an executive producer), so we'll have to see if the writing can sustain viewer interest over the course of an entire season.

You can watch the pilot right now at this link. Every episode of the season will be available to stream starting November 20th.

Watch Han Solo's Flashback: Memories and Nostalgia Strike Again

Some people say your life flashes before your eyes just before you die. Perhaps that’s true, perhaps it isn’t. But watching the new Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer and focusing on the moment when our beloved Han Solo appears makes me wonder what might be flashing before his eyes in that instant. What is going on in his head when he says the already immortal lines from that trailer? “It’s true. All of it. The Dark Side. The Jedi. They are real." Even though it is not the end of his life, Solo is definitely reminiscing about something: the past. With it's stories both dark and bright, the past is still haunting the Star Wars characters. There are voices that keep whispering, and echoes which will never cease to tinge the air.

Skywalk has created a video that imagines what Solo sees in that moment:

“You've seen the Trailer, now live the Flashback! This film is made from the full theatrical The Force Awakens trailer, this is what Han sees before his eyes when he tells Rey and Finn about the past.”

That particular moment is truly emotional (or at least I think so). What do you think?

FUNimation Entertainment has released the first trailer for Ghost in the Shell: The New Movie, which is the first Ghost in the Shell film that has been released in the past ten years. I've been a fan of this franchise since I saw the original theatrical film back in 1995. It's awesome to see that we're getting a new theatrical film in the franchise, and it looks like it will deliver a story that the fans will enjoy.

Luckily for those of us that live in the United States, Ghost in the Shell: The New Movie is set to screen in more than 330 theaters across the U.S. and Canada. It will screen on November 10th, 11th, and 16th, 2015. Here's the detailed synopsis for the film:

Set in a futuristic Japan after the end of a brutal world war, science has advanced by leaps and bounds giving humanity the choice to prolong life and reduce suffering with the use of sophisticated cybernetics. With all of humanity linked into one system of minds and personalities known as ghosts, the biggest threat to civilization is the cyber terrorists capable of hijacking people’s bodies and memories.

When a ghost-infecting virus known as Fire-Starter begins spreading through the system resulting in the assassination of the Japanese Prime Minister, Major Motoko Kusanagi and her elite team of special operatives are called in to track down its source. As they delve deeper and deeper into their investigation, they uncover traces of government corruption and a shadowy broker that bears an all-too-familiar face.

When your target can be anywhere and look like anyone, the only choice you have is to trust your ghost, and hope you aren’t infected too.

If you want to buy tickets for the movie, click here. DreamWorks Pictures is currently developing a Ghost in the Shell live-action adaptation starring Scarlett Johansson that's being directed by Rupert Sanders, which is expected for release on March 31st, 2017.

Here are some additional details from the press release we received:

“‘Ghost in The Shell’ is truly an iconic franchise in the world of anime, and FUNimation is pleased to bring this long awaited, new film to audiences across North America,” said Gen Fukunaga, founder and CEO of FUNimation. “Long-time fans as well as new fans from last year’s Arise series will be blown away by this action packed movie.”
“This is the ‘Ghost in The Shell’ film for the modern era. We encourage fans to purchase tickets in advance so they don’t miss the opportunity to experience all of the action on the big screen,” said Mike Duboise, EVP and COO of FUNimation.

Video Essay Says Spectacle Eclipses Story in Chris Nolan's INTERSTELLAR

$

I went into Interstellar not having seen a single second of footage and hoping to really enjoy the film. Like many of you, Nolan is one of my favorite filmmakers, but I tried to keep my expectations tempered; still, I couldn't help but walk out of the theater disappointed with what I'd just seen. There's no denying the movie is incredibly ambitious, but I don't think he stuck the landing. I don't think the quality of the writing lived up to the dynamic visuals, and as a result, I thought the movie had a lot of build-up with an unfulfilling conclusion.

After some (frankly unnecessary) comparisons to Avatar, this eight minute video essay gets into some more detailed issues the narrator has with Interstellar, calling out the director's need for creating spectacle over creating compelling characters. What do you think? Do you agree with these criticisms? And I'd love to hear from those of you who may have seen the movie a couple of times by now: how does it hold up after multiple viewings? Let me know in the comments.

David Goyer Reveals KRYPTON TV Series Takes Place 200 Years Before MAN OF STEEL

$

Last year we learned that the SyFy Channel would be developing another Superman-inspired TV series called Krypton. Thanks to creator and screenwriter David Goyer, we have some new details on the series to share with you.

Before we get into that news, it was previously revealed that the show "takes place years before the Superman legend we know, when the House of El was shamed and ostracized. This drama, which is in development, follows the Man of Steel's grandfather as he brings hope and equality to Krypton, turning a planet in disarray into one worthy of giving birth to the greatest Super Hero ever known."

In an interview with Comicbook.com, Goyer revealed that the story would take place 200 years before the events of Man of Steel. He also said that Krypton will be the first series to actually have a connection with the DC Extended Universe, which none of the other DC shows have.

"It takes place 200 years before Man of Steel. We're treating Krypton like it's a historical piece. We look to previous cultures on Earth to model what that would be like."

It seems like it would be easy to connect this series to the DCEU, and it wouldn't really affect any of their movie plans because the setting and timeframe are so far away from the present day events happening in the films. Goyer went on to say:

"We scratched the surface in the film and, for me, that was the allure. I was always fascinated, as a kid, with the books about Krypton and they’ve only shaded in a tiny bit, so we’ll learn about the politics of the world. We’ll learn about the culture, the art, all the different guilds."

He then teased that the show would also explore "a lot of different locations... some of the other moons, which is kind of cool." Krypton has had as many as three moons that are named Wegthor, Mithen, and Xenon.

In a separate interview with Collider, Goyer was asked how Krypton would be presented in terms of budget and practicality, and this was his reply:

“In terms of production value, you have to pick your moments. It will definitely, should we make the show there will definitely be some big moments. It won’t be wall to wall visual effects every single moment, spectacle, in the way that the film will be, but we’ll also be digging into the characters and the culture a lot more.”

Krypton has yet to receive an official green light, but it is deep in development at the moment. Everything I've heard about the series so far has me fascinated, and I'm curious to see what comes of it.

This mashup of Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight and Tim Burton's Pee-Wee's Big Adventure has been a long time coming, but it was finally spliced together by That Show About That Thing. It's called The Dark Knight's Big Adventure, and it proves that Pee-Wee would make a great Batman villain!

Marvel Releases Intense Full-Length Trailer for JESSICA JONES

The first full trailer for Marvel's Jessica Jones has finally arrived, and the series promises to be a dark and intense story. Everything that we've seen up until this point has been great, but this trailer really kicks ass and gives us everything that we need to pump us up to watch the series. This looks like it will be Marvel's darkest project yet.

Krysten Ritter shows off a few of her abilities as Jessica Jones, and she is going to be great in the role. Mike Colter's Luke Cage seems like perfect casting, and David Tennant's Kilgrave is a  menacing villain who "leaves a trail of broken people behind him."

After a tragic ending to her short-lived super hero stint, Jessica Jones is rebuilding her personal life and career as a detective who gets pulled into cases involving people with extraordinary abilities in New York City.

The series premieres on Netflix 20th, and I'll be binge watching all thirteen episodes!
