FANTASTIC FOUR Rumored to Be Back at Marvel With a Movie Planned for 2020

0
0

A huge rumor has hit the internet that claims the rights to Fantastic Four are back at Marvel and that the studio is planning a film for 2020. This news originated at Den of Geek, but there's no confirmation that it's true. If it is true, it could be a huge deal.

Just yesterday we learned that Marvel and Fox have teamed up to create two X-Men-themed TV series called Hellfire and Legion. According to the site's sources, Fantastic Four was a part of that deal.

Fox were given the TV rights for X-Men in exchange for Fantastic Four. The deal's been in the works for some time we're told. Further, the timing of Marvel's recent announcement of its movie slate leading up to the year 2020 and the X-Men TV series is no coincidence.

I previously said in the rant I wrote up that Marvel should use the X-Men series as leverage to get the Fantastic Four rights back, and now it looks like that's actually how it all played out. The report goes on to reveal that Marvel also got the rights back to Galactus, Doctor Doom, and The Silver Surfer.

If this rumor does turn out to be true, it's the smartest decision that Fox could have made. The fans will trust the Fantastic Four property in the hands of Marvel, and the 2020 date gives us enough time to get the bad taste out of our mouths from this year's Fantastic Four reboot. It would also be so cool to see these characters join the MCU.

This is really exciting stuff, and I'll be pretty bummed if it turns out not to be true. I will fight Den of Geek if they are lying to us!

Fiendish Halloween Horror Comedy Short - MONSTER PROBLEMS

0
0

I’ve got an amusing Halloween horror comedy short for you to watch today called "Monster Problems." It centers on three monsters who are looking to eat a little boy in his bedroom after he goes to bed. Unfortunately for them, the boy is a lot smarter than they are, and he knows how to keep the monsters at bay.

The short was directed by Adam Green (Hatchet, Frozen) for ArieScope Pictures’ annual Halloween short film. It stars Derek Mears (Friday the 13th 2009), Kelly Vrooman (The Chica Show), and Colton Dunn (Key & Peele).

When talking about how this year's short film came about, Green explained:

“I was thinking about the ridiculous things we do as children to protect ourselves from the monsters lurking under our beds and in our closets… and then realized that perhaps those things aren’t actually so ridiculous after all.  I mean, we might laugh at the concept of being protected by our bed covers or joke at the philosophy that a simple nightlight can actually scare away hungry monsters looking to devour us… but at the same time, when you look at the success ratio of 'nightlights vs. children eaten by monsters' you kind of have to give credit where credit is due.  If you’ve seen this year’s DIGGING UP THE MARROW (our latest feature film) than you know just how much I personally want to believe that monsters are real.  So by my calculations… if monsters are indeed real and yet no children are being eaten by them… then clearly the childhood rituals of 'jumping into bed,' 'hiding under the covers,' 'nightlights,' and even the ultimate secret weapon of 'calling for Dad' must actually work, right?  Of course it helped that I happened to have 3 extremely talented comedian friends that I knew I could call upon to portray the three monsters that I created for this year’s short.”

The short turned out to be entertaining, and I hope y’all enjoy it!

Inspiring Full Trailer For The Jesse Owens Biopic RACE

Focus Features has released a full trailer for their upcoming Jesse Owens biopic Race, which really looks like an incredible and inspiring movie. Stephan James plays Owens in the film, and from what I can see in this trailer, he does a great job.

Based on the incredible true story of Jesse Owens, the legendary athletic superstar whose quest to become the greatest track and field athlete in history thrusts him onto the world stage of the 1936 Olympics, where he faces off against Adolf Hitler’s vision of Aryan supremacy. “Race” is an enthralling film about courage, determination, tolerance, and friendship, and an inspiring drama about one man’s fight to become an Olympic legend.

The movie was directed by Stephen Hopkins (Predator 2, Blown Away, The Ghost and the Darkness) from a script by Joe Shrapnel and Anna WaterhouseRace also stars Jason Sudeikis, Jeremy Irons, Carice van Houten, Shanice Banton, and William Hurt.

About a year ago John Boyega was set to star in another Owens biopic directed by Antoine Fuqua, but I have no idea where that film stands at the moment.

Race hits theaters on February 19th, 2016.

Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd Reunite in Toyota Commercial

Back to the Future stars Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd have reunited in a new commercial for Toyota, teasing a promotion of a new car called the Mirai. The commercial features the two actors at a table in a diner catching up with each other and discussing the predictions and gadgets that Back to the Future Part 2 got right for 2015.

This is only a tease for a longer ad that will be released on October 21st, 2015, which has been dubbed "Back to the Future Day" because that's the exact date Marty travels to in the second movie in order to help his kids avoid getting in major trouble. It's great seeing these two actors back together again!

Newest Trailer For PARANORMAL ACTIVITY: THE GHOST DIMENSION

0
0

Paramount Pictures just sent over the brand new trailer for Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension, and it offers exactly what you'd expect from a Paranormal film: creepy kids, hand-held footage, and a deep dive into the mythology of the franchise. The twist this time around is the new family finds a video camera that somehow has the capability to see the supernatural beings operating around them, which should produce some added scares for fans in the theater and supposedly answer all of the questions everyone's had since this series started in 2009.

One thing that strikes me as a strange choice from a marketing perspective, though, is the voiceover guy they chose to narrate this trailer. It just sounds like they pulled some dude off the street and asked him to read lines; he doesn't sound professional or have the type of booming, assertive voice we've come to expect from...well, practically every trailer ever made. Check it out below.

Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension centers on the Fleeges — father Ryan (Chris J. Murray), mother Emily (Brit Shaw) and their young daughter Leila (Ivy George) — who move into a house and discover a video camera and a box of tapes in the garage. When they look through the camera’s lens, they begin to see the paranormal activity happening around them – including the re-emergence of young Kristi and Katie.

Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension will be released in 3D on October 23rd.

Bizarre Video Combines Hitchcock and Kubrick Characters Into One Nightmarish World

The Red Drum Getaway is a mashup that uses footage of Jimmy Stewart from Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window and Vertigo and shows him interacting with characters from the films of Stanley Kubrick. He eventually gets so far down the rabbit hole that things become completely surreal, but there's something spellbinding about watching this character walk around in a dreamlike state, discovering weirder and weirder things around every corner. Great editing by the folks at Gump.

Be warned: this is NSFW because it uses footage of the nude rituals in Eyes Wide Shut and a part of the infamous "Singin' in the Rain" scene from A Clockwork Orange.

Vin Diesel Talks About FURIOUS 8 Being Set in New York

0
0

Earlier this year, Vin Diesel revealed that Furious 8 would be set in New York, which is a really interesting setting for this franchise. While talking to Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show, Diesel went on to reveal that the first movie in the franchise was actually inspired by the street racers of New York. When asked about the setting for the next film, Diesel exclaimed:

“New York, baby! Something that people don’t know is the first movie came from a Vibe article that was about street racers in New York. The director and producer at the time reset the whole movie in LA, but the Vibe article that the whole franchise was started from actually originated in New York. So we’re finally BRINGING IT BACK HOME, BABY!”

Having been to New York on several occasions, I have no idea where these street racers will be driving fast and furious. Those roads are packed and narrow, so it's going to make racing through them very interesting. New York is a fun playground to play in, and I'm sure they've got some visually stunning action scenes planned that are going to be really fun for fans to watch. New York will make a great setting for the next installment of the franchise.

Jason Statham, Dwayne Johnson, and Kurt Russell are all expected to return, along with franchise regulars Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Elsa Pataky, and maybe even Lucas Black.

F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton, The Italian Job) is set to direct the movie, and it is scheduled to be released on April 14th, 2017. Furious 8 is the start of a new trilogy that will conclude the franchise.

Kathleen Kennedy Promises She'll Hire a Female Director For a STAR WARS Movie

0
0

In a discussion with Fortune, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy had some interesting things to say about the people responsible for the reinvigorated Star Wars film franchise.

Some of you may know this already, but it was news to me that half of the executives at the company are women, and six out of eight people in the Lucasfilm story group — the team responsible for shaping the stories of all Star Wars-related properties — are women. That's awesome, and Kennedy says "it makes a huge difference in the stories we're trying to tell." Hollywood is a place that's been traditionally dominated by men for so long, it's good to hear that Kennedy and Disney are looking to change up that dynamic by bringing more women into the fold. She touts the difference it makes in storytelling, and that's absolutely true, especially when it comes to female characters on screen: that kind of representation is huge, and any marginalized group seeing movies characters they can identify with is a very big deal. (Not only protagonists like Rey in the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but villains like Captain Phasma, too.)

Kennedy also promised a female director will direct a Star Wars movie, though the timing on that is still murky.

"I feel it is going to happen — we are going to hire a woman who's going to direct a Star Wars movie. I have no doubt. On the other hand, I want to make sure we put somebody in that position who's set up for success. It's not just a token job to look out and try to find a woman that we can put into a position of directing Star Wars. It is interesting because I have a huge number of men who call me constantly and tell me how much of a Star Wars fan they are and how much they want to get involved in anything to do with Star Wars — I don't have a lot of women who call and have those conversations with me. Now, that's not to say that there aren't Star Wars fans out there and women whose careers have been shaped in some way by Star Wars if they're in film, but it's not in the same way that it is for me. So that's one of the challenges that we keep talking about. If we do want to bring a woman in to direct a Star Wars movie, we want to make sure that it's somebody who's passionate and really, really wants to do a Star Wars movie. We don't want to talk somebody into it."

A couple of things worth bringing up here. I think in regard to her comments about women not calling her as often as men, there's probably some societal and industry-related reasons for that: women traditionally aren't given the same opportunities as men (especially when it comes to directing big budget movies), so it stands to reason that there wouldn't be as many women that would try to talk their way into a big film like that. But it's great that she wants to bring a woman in to get behind the camera, and it's also sort of a common sense thing that she'd want that person to be passionate about directing a Star Wars movie instead of just being a diversity hire to fill some sort of quota. It sounds like the story really comes first with Kennedy, and whoever is the best fit to tell that particular story will be hired to do it.

Pixar Releases First Clip From SANJAY'S SUPER TEAM Animated Short

0

This clip gives us our first look at Pixar's latest short film project called Sanjay's Super Team. The story centers on a young Hindu boy who loves superheroes and cartoons and is more interested in them than he is the religious practices of his family.

The short was directed by Pixar Animation Studios artist Sanjay Patel, and it's inspired by his own experiences growing up. The story leads to a combination of Sanjay's love for superheroes and religion when he begins to envision the Hindu gods Hanuman, Durga, and Vishnu as a superhero team. Here's an official description for the short:

The seven-minute short begins with young Sanjay watching cartoons and eating cereal in a bland, beige room as his father jingles a bell, beckoning him to join in meditation. Reluctant and bored by the ceremony, Sanjay begins daydreaming a kind of ancient, Hindu version of “The Avengers,” with the gods appearing like superheroes. As the daydream progresses, the color, light and animation of the film grows increasingly dazzling and cosmic, and Sanjay grows closer to understanding his father’s inner world.

The short is fantastic. I got to see it earlier this year at D23, and what you see in this clip is just a little tease. It's set to screen with The Good Dinosaur when that film is released on November 25th. For more information on the short, click here.

WHERE'S THE WOOKIEE is a STAR WARS Version of WHERE'S WALDO

When I was growing up, I was stupidly obsessed with the Where's Waldo books. We now have a geeky, Star Wars-inspired version of that book called Where's the Wookiee, which was created by artist Ulises Farinas. It features 40 pages of illustrations where you search for Chewbacca throughout the Star Wars universe. You'd think a 7-foot furball wouldn't be too hard to find, but he kind of is.

Chewbacca, a notorious rebel ally, is wanted for crimes against the Empire. Not often seen without his partner-in-crime, Han Solo, this Wookiee has evaded capture on multiple occasions, due in no small part to the fastest freighter in the universe, the Millennium Falcon. Chewie, as he is more commonly known, has a sizeable bounty on his head. Can you find this furry criminal before other accomplished bounty hunters beat you to it?

You can test it out by trying to find Chewie in the two images that have been released for the book. If you want to buy a copy, click here.

Rebecca Ferguson In Talks To Co-Star With Fassbender in THE SNOWMAN; May Join Him in ALIEN: PARADISE LOST

0
0

Rebecca Ferguson was one of the best parts about this summer's Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation, going toe to toe with Tom Cruise and the rest of the cast and coming out looking like a total badass. As such, the actress has become a hot commodity in Hollywood, with rumors swirling that she was being considered for the role of Captain Marvel at one point. While that role is still yet to officially be filled, Ferguson has her eye on a couple of other projects.

Deadline reports that the actress is in talks to star opposite Michael Fassbender in The Snowman, a Norwegian crime thriller from Let The Right One In and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy director Tomas Alfredson. Fassbender plays Harry Hole, a detective attempting to solve murders committed by Norway's first serial killer — one who murders married mothers and decorates snowmen with their belongings. The deal hasn't gone through yet, but the intention is to begin filming this January.

She's also reportedly "in the mix" to star in Ridley Scott's Prometheus sequel Alien: Paradise Lost, which also has Fassbender attached to reprise his role as the android David. We just learned last week that the movie would feature a new batch of travelers for Noomi Rapace and Fassbender's characters to interact with, and though Deadline doesn't have any info about Ferguson's potential role, I'll speculate that she could be a part of that new crew.

In the meantime, Ferguson will co-star with Emily Blunt, Chris Evans, and Jared Leto in The Girl on The Train. While she could return for Mission: Impossible 6, the series hasn't done very well retaining its leading ladies over the course of five films so far. We'll see if Ferguson made a big enough impact to change that.

Warner Bros.' Live Action TARZAN Film May Be In Trouble

0
0

Warner Bros. announced a live-action Tarzan movie a few years ago, with Alexander Skarsgard and Margot Robbie in the roles of the vine-swinging jungle dweller and his gal pal Jane. Director David Yates is at the helm, but if a new report from THR is to be believed, the film might be in a little bit of trouble because Yates is now occupied with a different project: the Harry Potter universe movie Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

Yates has already begun production on Beasts, while there's reportedly a lot of post-production work left to do on Tarzan. Results of early test screenings have not been positive, and some sources close to the production are saying Yates is only looking over edits on the weekends while shooting Beasts during the week. Some are questioning why the same studio would take a director off of one project before it's finished to put him on another one, but a WB executive says they are "extremely comfortable with the production timelines" and "have total confidence in the skill of David Yates — who is a four-time Harry Potter director — to deliver both of these pictures."

The studio definitely doesn't care as much about Tarzan as Beasts, since the latter is a part of WB's all-time biggest franchises and is designed to start a new trilogy of movies that are expected to do big money at the box office. It'd be wrong to assume they're just writing off Tarzan completely, especially since Pan flopped so hard recently and they're probably not thrilled with the idea of another bomb on their hands, but it's clear that the priority lies with Beasts and Tarzan is something of an after thought.

Let's all take this information with a grain of salt. Just because a movie experiences some difficulties during production (or post-production) doesn't automatically mean it's going to be bad. And who knows? Maybe this info was leaked by someone with a grudge against WB or the film just to drum up some negative publicity. Months from now, we could look back on this as a weird blip in the radar that had no discernible bearing on the final product, or we could look back on it as the first major sign of bad things to come. We'll have to see if Tarzan can hit its July 1st, 2016 release date or if the studio ends up bumping it back so Yates has time to finish it properly.

First Trailer For RATCHET & CLANK Animated Film Kicks Some Asteroid

0
0

After being in development for a few years, the big screen CG animated adaptation of the video game Ratchet & Clank finally has a trailer. I don't really like the way the trailer is presented, especially with the voiceover explaining the story throughout the whole thing. Regardless of that, the movie still looks better than I thought it would, and it has potential to be a fun flick.

Ratchet & Clank is being directed by Kevin Munroe (TMNT) and co-directed by Jericca Cleland. It also has a great voice cast that includes Sylvester Stallone, John Goodman, Rosario Dawson, Paul Giamatti, and Bella Thorne as various characters. The voice cast of the original video game have also reprised their roles. That list of actors includes James Arnold Taylor as Ratchet, David Kaye as Clank, Armin Shimerman as Nefarious, and Jim Ward as Captain Qwark.

Ratchet and Clank tells the story of two unlikely heroes as they struggle to stop a vile alien named Chairman Drek from destroying every planet in the Solana Galaxy. When the two stumble upon a dangerous weapon capable of destroying entire planets, they must join forces with a team of colorful heroes called The Galactic Rangers in order to save the galaxy. Along the way they'll learn about heroism, friendship, and the importance of discovering one's own identity.

Ratchet & Clank opens in theaters on April 29th, 2016.

Paramount Developing a Remake of THE TEN COMMANDMENTS

0
0

Cecil B. DeMille's 1956 Biblical epic The Ten Commandments is one of Paramount Pictures' most prized achievements. It won an Oscar for Visual Effects, was one of the most financially successful movies of the time, and was largely beloved by audiences and critics. I was a studio page at Paramount a few years ago, and the studio still (rightly) has a lot of love for The Ten Commandments. It's a big landmark in the company's history.

The Tracking Board reports that Paramount is developing a remake of the classic with Disruption Entertainment.

The film will, not surprisingly, center around the Exodus story of Moses, and his leading the Jewish people out of Egypt, freeing them from the oppressive rule of the Pharaoh Ramses. Producers are eyeing a writer-director who can give a different take than previous incarnations of the timeless tale.

The idea of a remake of this movie isn't inherently bad — after all, the 1956 DeMille version was a remake of his own 1923 version of the same story — but considering we JUST SAW this story on the big screen in Ridley Scott's Exodus: Gods and Kings, the timing seems extremely questionable. That film only pulled in $65 million domestically but earned over $200 million in foreign countries, so maybe the executives are thinking there's more money to be had from the global markets...but I can't shake the fact that Exodus JUST CAME OUT, so why would people want to watch this story again so soon? How different can any version of this story possibly be? It's not like the effects are going to be drastically different than what we saw in Exodus (improved technology had to be part of the reason Scott was interested in retelling the tale), so I have no idea what they think will justify this remake.

What do you think?

Watch a Samurai Slice a 100 MPH Baseball in Half with a Sword

Isao Machii is a master swordsman and modern day samurai warrior, and you can watch him in action below. On the first try, with one swipe of his sword, he slices a baseball in half that is rocketing toward him at 100 mph. It's truly incredible and fun to watch. I've also included a video of him competing with a robot. Sometimes I wish I grew up being trained as a samurai warrior. Now I just watch other people like Machii living my dream.

Tom Hiddleston Says KONG: SKULL ISLAND is Doing "Something New With The Myth"

0
0

With the recent announcement that Godzilla vs. King Kong is being released in 2020, a little more light has been placed on the upcoming Kong: Skull Island movie that will be hitting theaters in 2017. Like I have never said before: if you have any questions, ask Tom Hiddleston. So, someone did.

Variety had a chance to talk to Hiddleston at the premiere of Crimson Peak, and they were able to ask about his role in Kong. This is what he had to say:

"It’s not set in the ’30s. There’s no movie director with a map. There’s no out-of-work actress down on her luck. All of that stuff is respected, we’re just trying to do something new with the myth because Kong is an icon of movies. I think he’s someone people want to see again."

This goes right along with the rumor that the story will take place in the '70s. Hiddleston also had a lot to say about the film’s director Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ (The Kings of Summer) take on the iconic ape, saying he has “come up with the most incredible, deeply imaginative context for [King Kong] to exist in.”

I am truly interested to see what Vogt-Roberts, Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, and Hiddleston can do with this new take on King Kong.

Do you think that shying away from the familiar story will help or hurt the upcoming film?

New Trailer For The Crazy-Looking DANGEROUS MEN, A Film 26 Years in The Making

0
0

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about Drafthouse Films' newest acquisition, a film called Dangerous Men. The story of how the distributor acquired it is worth reading, and the first trailer gave us a tiny taste of the sort of insanity we can expect when this movie hits theaters. Today they've released a new trailer, and it's just as bonkers as the first one. This thing looks totally unhinged, and after hearing the response from some of the people who have seen the movie during its initial four theater run a few years ago, I'm really glad Drafthouse Films is putting this out there for everyone to experience. It'll be in theaters on November 13th.

In 1989, Iranian filmmaker John S. Rad moved to the U.S. to shoot his dream project, a rampaging gutter epic of crime, revenge, cop sex and raw power. Just 26 years later, he completed an American action film masterpiece that the world is still barely ready for today: DANGEROUS MEN.

After Mina witnesses her fiancé's brutal murder by beach thugs, she sets out on a venomous spree to eradicate all human trash from Los Angeles. Armed with a knife, a gun, and an undying rage, she murders her way through the masculine half of the city's populace. A renegade cop is hot on her heels, a trail that also leads him to the subhuman criminal overlord known as Black Pepper.

It's a pulse-pounding, heart-stopping, brain-devouring onslaught of '80s thunder, '90s lightning, and pure filmmaking daredevilry from another time and/or dimension. Blades flash, blood flows, bullets fly and synthesizers blare as the morgue overflows with the corpses of DANGEROUS MEN.
