GUNSLINGER is The Only Western Supercut You'll Ever Need To See

$
0
0

I'm sort of baffled by Gunslinger, Smash TV's western mega supercut. It includes footage from practically every western you could want, but it's the length that gets me: this thing is over an hour long! Who is going to sit there and watch that entire video? But clicking through it, I must admit that it's pretty mesmerizing. There was so much work that went into this, and while it doesn't have the dream-like logic of something like Hell's Club, the characters often work in concert with the music that scores the video. For example, around the 13:00 mark, it turns into a supercut within a supercut of characters spinning their guns around their fingers, set to some record scratching that seems appropriate to the circular motion of the guns.

The entire video is made up of moments like that, so while I can't recommend watching the whole thing (if only because I haven't taken the time to see it all myself), it's probably worth clicking around and checking out some of it for a few minutes. It's certainly a unique experience.

John Carpenter's HALLOWEEN Returning to Theaters For One Night Only

$

John Carpenter's Halloween was so influential that it essentially kickstarted the entire slasher genre, and the horror classic has become not only a must-watch for any horror fan but also practically required viewing when the spooky holiday rolls around every October. This year, fans will have the special opportunity to see the movie in theaters for one night only, as Fathom Events and SpectiCast are teaming to bring the film to audiences on the big screen. A new press release says that they'll be playing the movie at 7:30pm local time on October 29th in select theaters across the country. (Click here to buy tickets and see which theaters near you will be playing the film.)

The coolest part, though, will likely be the introduction of the movie by Carpenter himself, in which he'll be "providing insights on Halloween and how it has forever changed the horror genre in Hollywood." Sounds like a pretty cool way to celebrate the holiday, don't you think? And by playing the film on the 29th instead of the 31st, it'll still allow everyone to go hang out and go to parties and stuff on the actual day itself. Prepare your crappy William Shatner masks — this should be fun.

New Details Teased About What The End of AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Will Bring

$
0
0

We've been getting a lot of information today from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige about certain things involving the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We now have a few more details that you might be interesting in knowing! It involves Phase 3 of their plan, which ends with the two Avengers: Infinity War films.

/Film was at the Avengers: Age of Ultron Blu-ray/DVD event, and they filmed a Q&A session that included Feige and Ultron producer Jeremy Latchem. A few of the more interesting details that came out of this Q&A included information on the Infinity Gauntlet and what the studio's plans are leading up to Infinity War - Part 2.

When asked about the when we might see the other two Infinity Stones introduced in the MCU, Feige said:

"You will see the other two, sometime in phase three for sure. There’s a gauntlet that needs to be filled."

That led to a question regarding the Gauntlet. Feige previously revealed that there is more than one Gauntlet in the MCU. When asked if the one Thanos has is the same one that we saw in Odin's chamber, he said:

"I may as well answer it because you asked it. It's not the same one."

Latcham then broke in and asked, "Which one do you think is the real one?" At that point, Feige seemed to give the producer kind of an angry look. I guess that might have given a little too much information than Feige was comfortable with. The conversation later turned to their Phase 3 plans, and when asked if the story has been planned out through Infinity War, to which Feige said:

"Yes, in broad strokes. Sometimes in super specific things, but for the most part in broad strokes that are broad enough and loose enough that if through the development of four or five movies before we get to the culmination, as you say, we still have room to sway, and to go, and to surprise ourselves in places that we end up."

Latcham expanded on that and explained how the two-part Infinity War story arc is basically going to bring an end to the Avengers that we've come to know and obviously set the stage for Phase 4:

"Well I think it definitely is an end to some version of the team that we’ve come to know as The Avengers. And I don’t know exactly what's going to happen yet in that film, but I think we start to hint at it at the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron that the team will be evolving. But the ideas and ideals that make The Avengers still exist, and I think that's part of what makes this culmination will be: we’re seeing this version of the team doing this thing to save this universe, this galaxy, however you want to put it, and we’ll see where this goes. So it's not the end of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it will be the end of part of it for sure. We’re still trying to sort out which parts. (laughs)"

We really have no idea what's actually in store for us in Phase 3, but it sure is going to be fun to see how it all plays out, and what happens to everything we've come to know and love in the MCU over the years. Make sure to check out the Q&A panel below for even more information.

Michael Madsen Cast as SuperShock in PlayStation Series POWERS

$

0

Quick: when you think of perfect physical specimen, which actors come to mind? If you immediately thought of Reservoir Dogs star Michael Madsen, you just might be the casting director of Powers, PlayStation's TV adaptation of Brian Michael Bendis' comic series. According to Deadline, he's just been cast as SuperShock, "the ultimate Power for whom the term 'superhero' was coined, a perfect physical specimen with an unparalleled presence that catapulted him to global fame. After retiring at the height of his career under mysterious circumstances and disappearing from public view, he emerges for the first time in forty years after the death of Retro Girl."

The show stars Sharlto Copley, Susan Heyward, Eddie Izzard, Noah Taylor, and more, and here's the full synopsis in case you're not familiar with it:

“Powers” is an edgy dramatic series that follows the lives of two homicide detectives, Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim, who are assigned to investigate cases involving people with superhuman abilities, referred to as Powers. Set amidst today’s paparazzi culture, “Powers” asks the questions, what if the world was full of superheroes who aren’t actually heroic at all? What if all that power was just one more excuse for mischief, mayhem, murder, and endorsement deals? Enter the men and women of the Powers Division, the brave people in charge of protecting humans like us and keeping the peace with these over-paid, commercialized, god-like men and women who glide through the sky imposing their power over the mortals who both worship and fear them.

Madsen would be pretty far down the list of people I'd think of when imagining a "Superman gone insane" type of character like this, but if he eventually becomes a villain — which I'm not certain about, because I haven't read the comics — I can definitely see him bringing a sense of menace to the character that would work really well for this show. We'll have to see how the storyline plays out, because as Deadline points out, the show has diverged from the source material before and seems content with doing its own thing when needed. Meanwhile, Madsen will star in Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight, which hits select theaters on Christmas Day.

Drew Goddard Talks About DAREDEVIL Season 2, Pitching Marvel a DAREDEVIL Film, and More

$

The Cabin in The Woods director Drew Goddard was originally set to run Marvel and Netflix's Daredevil show, but he ended up leaving that to take his dream job at Sony to make a Sinister Six film. That project was abandoned after Sony teamed with Marvel to bring Spider-Man to the MCU, although it could still happen sometime down the line if Marvel wants it to.

In an interview with IGN, Goddard spoke about his initial take on the Netflix series, how a film version of Daredevil would have ended up "watered down," and the upcoming second season, which he executive produced:

"I went into Marvel and talked to them about making it as a movie a couple of years ago, long after the Affleck movie. But what we all sort of realised is that, this movie doesn’t want to cost $200 million. The thing about Matt Murdock is, he’s not saving the world. He’s just keeping his corner clean. So it would feel wrong to have spaceships crashing in the middle of the city. But because of that, Marvel on the movie side is not in the business of making $25 million movies. They’re going big, as they should...
It felt that we’d have more freedom to make it on the small screen and make it more adult. Look, if we took the Netflix [show] and put it in theatres, it’s rated R. And they’re not doing R-rated movies. And we also got to really explore the character. I feel like Netflix was the best possible home for that, otherwise you’d end up with a watered down version...
I’m not running the show any more, Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez are, and they’re doing a phenomenal job. I get to go and play. All I can tell you is that if you liked Season 1, then Season 2 is going to blow your mind. They’re going big."

Goddard clearly loves the character of Daredevil, and it might have been cool to see what he could have done with Matt Murdock on the big screen, but it's hard to deny that the small scope of the character is very well suited for TV. It's only a matter of time until the TV characters are referenced or included in the MCU films, so maybe we'll end up seeing Daredevil share the screen with The Avengers by the time Avengers: Infinity War comes around.

Genndy Tartakovsky is Still Trying to Bring SAMURAI JACK Back

Genndy Tartakovsky's new animated film Hotel Transylvania 2 was released earlier this week, and I've been hearing great things about it. I just haven't had a chance to see it yet. It was also recently announced that we would be seeing a Hotel Transylvania 3, but he won't be back to direct that sequel, as he's got a bunch of other projects that he'd like to work on. Hopefully, one of those projects ends up being Samurai Jack

I love Samurai Jack, and it would be amazing to see it make a comeback! Right now there's a wave of TV shows being adapted into movies, movies being adapted in TV shows, and TV series being revived as TV series. I think Samurai Jack is popular enough to be successful however it's presented. During an interview with ComicBook.com, Tartakovsky reiterates how much he wants to bring Jack back, and that it could be in the form of a movie or TV series revival:

“I think through the years, after we finished Jack, almost every year it seems like Samurai Jack has gotten more and more popular and more and more people have seen it. I feel like it’s culminating to a fever pitch almost. I feel like it’s time to maybe finish the story. We’ve been trying to get the feature off the ground but maybe that’s just fate’s way of saying this is a television thing and maybe it should be a mini-series or something like that.”

It is time to finish the story! It's been that time for a while. I'd be happy to see it come back as a movie or a TV series. All that matters to me is that it happens. Hopefully, someone in Hollywood will finally see the light and let him do this thing!

A few months ago, we posted a fan-made CG animated short for Samurai Jack that generated some excitement. You can check that out here in case you missed it. We also previously did a Movie Dream Team column that you can read here

Michael Bay Posts Tribute Video To Talented Aerial Photographer Alan Purwin

Director Michael Bay (or someone on his team) has cut together a nice tribute video to aerial photographer Alan Purwin, who died earlier this month while working on the new Doug Liman/Tom Cruise film Mena in Colombia (Purwin was a passenger in a plane crash that also took the life of one other person).

Helicopter shots are one of those aspects I tend to take for granted when watching movies, and I've never really spent time considering the amount of work that goes into organizing and executing some of those shots from above. It's an art form all its own, and Purwin was one of the best in his field. Watch the video, and pay attention to the astounding number of credits he has at the very end: this guy is partly responsible for the look of some of your favorite movies.

Phil Lord and Chris Miller Turning Hugely Popular SERIAL Podcast Into a TV Show

$

Here's yet another idea that sounds absolutely terrible, but because creative geniuses Phil Lord and Chris Miller are behind it, will probably turn out to be great.

If you're a podcast listener — or even if you aren't, actually — you've likely heard of Serial, the This American Life podcast hosted by Sarah Koenig that quickly became a phenomenon when it debuted last year and won a Peabody Award. The show took a deep dive into the murder case of Adnan Syed, who allegedly killed his girlfriend Hae Min Lee when they were teenagers, and tried to see if Syed was actually guilty of the crime. It's riveting stuff, and I'd highly recommend checking it out if you haven't listened yet.

Anyway, when something catches fire, Hollywood typically looks for a way to latch on, so the rights to the show were being shopped around last year for a film or TV adaptation, and now THR reports that Lord and Miller — the dynamic duo behind the Jump Street films, The LEGO Movie, the new Han Solo Star Wars spinoff, and more — are going to produce a TV series based on the podcast. An important distinction: the show won't be based on Syed's case, but rather the creation and recording of the podcast itself. Sounds like a kind of terrible idea, right? A show about the making of a podcast? But I'm guessing Lord and Miller have something cool up their sleeves.

Koenig and her producing partners liked the duo's pitch and are on board with the idea, and the plan is to find a writer or writers quickly and start pitching to cable networks.

"From the very first week of Serial’s release last fall, everyone at Fox 21 TVS was obsessed with the podcast. One year later, thanks to the incredible passion of Chris and Phil, who flew to New York and shared their vision with Sarah, Julie [Snyder], Alissa [Shipp] and Ira [Glass] for what the series could be, we’re moving forward on this exciting project," said Fox 21 TV Studios president Bert Salke, who is already collaborating with the This American Life team on another project. "What you have here is a 'once every ten years creative storytelling phenom' with a 'once in ten years take' with a 'once in twenty-five years creative team.' We are confident we’ll attract a spectacular writer and look forward to pitching it to outlets very soon."
Added Serial’s Snyder, "Chris and Phil take an unexpected approach to telling stories and that is so appealing to us at Serial. They experiment. They don’t mimic formulas. Developing a show with them is exciting because we feel like we speak the same language, only they’re smarter than us."

The second season of Serial will reportedly focus on Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, the soldier who was held captive by the Taliban during his service in Afghanistan. There's no timetable yet on the release date of the show, but hopefully we'll see how this plays out soon. Lord and Miller haven't steered us wrong yet, so I have complete faith that they'll be able to pull this off without a hitch. Here's SNL's great Serial parody from last Christmas. Maybe they'll cast Cecily Strong as Koenig:

A new international teaser trailer has been released for Marvel's Jessica Jones. It features the title character walking through a bar with a group of people that she has just kicked the living shit out of. I was never really sure what to expect from this series, but it might just be more badass than I thought.

After a tragic ending to her short-lived Super Hero stint, Jessica Jones is rebuilding her personal life and career as a detective who gets pulled into cases in New York City. It's time the world knew her name...

The series stars Krysten Ritter in the title role, David Tennant (Kilgrave), Mike Colter (Luke Cage), Rachael Taylor (Trish Walker), Carrie-Anne Moss, Eka Darville, Erin Moriarty, and Wil Traval, among others. Every episode of Jessica Jones will be released on Netflix on November 20th.

Review: THE MARTIAN Is Ridley Scott's Best Film in 10 Years

$

0

It seems like it’s been a long time since I’ve seen a Ridley Scott movie that I’ve actually loved. As I look back at his filmography, the last movie of his that I was truly impressed with was Kingdom of Heaven back in 2005. All the films in between have been good, but they haven’t been anything special. I’m happy to say that with The Martian, Scott finally wowed me again! Everything I had seen from the film up until this point looked great, but only when you actually see it do you get a sense of how truly awesome this movie is.

The Martian is a sci-fi suspense thriller set in the near future, and it begins with a group of astronauts on Mars studying the planet. Everything goes wrong when a giant storm hits and they are forced to evacuate before their shuttle is destroyed by the storm. While they are trying to get the hell off the planet, Matt Damon’s character is hit with debris and lost in the madness of the storm. Fearing that he’s dead, the commander of the crew makes the decision to leave without him for the safety of the rest of the team. Little do they know, he’s still alive. From there on out the film focuses on Damon doing everything he can to survive on Mars until NASA can send a team to rescue him.

What I liked about this film was that it was a simple story that was character focused, but at the same time it also had huge epic settings on Mars, NASA, and a giant freakin’ spacecraft. Underneath all of that beautiful imagery, there was a story about a man that I came to care about. You really want to see this poor guy survive against all the odds. I enjoy these kinds of movies as I find them inspirational. They capture the determination and awesomeness of the human spirit. The movie also celebrates the power of space exploration and science.

It may not be very action-packed, but it’s still an exhilarating movie that manages to keep you on the edge of your seat. Throughout the whole film, you don’t know if Damon’s character is going to actually get off Mars and go home or not. The guy ends up going through one crazy thing after another. The red planet was not very kind to him.

Damon is incredible in the role of Mark Watney, and he gives one of his best performances. Damon is pretty fantastic in everything that he is a part of, but this is definitely up there for him because he has to carry the bulk of the movie on his own shoulders. Not as much as Tom Hanks had to carry in Cast Away, but enough to make this a great achievement in Damon’s career.

The also features an incredible ensemble cast including Jessica Chastain as Melissa Lewis, Kristen Wiig as Annie Montrose, Jeff Daniels as Teddy Sanders, Michael Pena as Rick Martinez, Sean Bean as Mitch Henderson, Kate Mara as Beth Johanssen, Sebastian Stan as Chris Beck, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Vincent Kapoor, and Donald Glover as Rich Purnel. Everyone is fantastic in their respective roles, which are all small, but each is given an opportunity to shine.

I think The Martian is one of this year's must-see movies, and I’m not the only one! If you don’t trust me, trust the 92% rating that it currently holds on Rotten Tomatoes. Scott directed the shit out of this movie and gave us something that is full of heart, drama, humor, and imagination.

Trailer for the Supernatural Thriller THE FOREST Set in Japan’s Suicide Forest

The first trailer has been released for producer David Goyer’s new supernatural horror thriller The Forest. The movie stars Natalie Dormer, who also stars in Game of Thrones and The Hunger Games. She’s a great actress, and this seems like an interesting film project for her to take on. There's a fascinating history behind the setting of the film, and I’m surprised it took so long for someone to use it for a film.

The story is set in the legendary Aokigahara forest, which is a real place in Japan where people go to end their lives. The film follows "a young American woman who comes in search of her twin sister, who has mysteriously disappeared. Despite everyone's warnings not to 'stray from the path,' she dares to enter the forest to discover the truth about her sister's fate, only to be confronted by the angry and tormented souls of the dead who now prey on anyone who crosses their paths."

The movie was directed by Jason Zada from a script written by Sarah Cornwell. The Forest hits theaters on January 8th, 2016!

Exciting Sneak Peak at NINJAI: THE LITTLE NINJA Animated Feature

When I was growing up, one of the places I went to for entertainment on the Internet was Atom.com. It was packed full of awesome short films both animated and live-action. One of my favorite things that popped up on that website was a web-series called Ninjai: The Little Ninja

GT reader Ryan Nelson sent me a YouTube link to an official sneak peek of an animated film that Ninjai Gang Productions is developing, and the memories of how much I loved this web-series came flooding back. I couldn’t be more excited about this, especially because of how freakin’ awesome it looks! Holy shit, just wait until you watch this teaser footage!

It looks like the development team will be crowdfunding the project on Kickstarter sometime in the near future. For the latest updates on the project, head over to their official site. Now enjoy the sneak peek!

DOCTOR STRANGE Origin Story Confirmed; Details on Rachel McAdams' Role

Doctor Strange will finally start production this November, and today we have learned some new details about the Scott Derrickson-directed Marvel project. IGN had the opportunity to talk to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige recently, and they asked him some questions about the film. One of the big things that he revealed was that Doctor Strange would, in fact, give us an origin story. It was rumored early on that this might not be the case, but this is what Feige had to say about it:

"For some reason people sometimes talked about how we're not doing an origin story, we're bored of origin stories. I think people are bored of origin stories they've seen before or origin stories that are overly familiar. Doctor Strange has one of the best, most classic, most unique origin stories of any hero we have, so why wouldn't we do that? That was sort of always the plan. How you tell that origin, perhaps there are ways to twist it or play with that, but for the most part, it's a gift when the comics have something with such clarity of story and of character. That doesn't always happen in the comics, and when it does, you use it."

It was also recently announced that Rachel McAdams had been cast in the lead female role in the film. We have yet to learn who exactly she'll be playing, but she will have a big role in the story. Feige explains:

"She plays a very, very big part in the movie and represents a certain point of view of the worlds that we experience in that movie, but Doctor Strange, without a doubt, is the character we follow through the movie."

The conversation then moved on to Tilda Swinton's The Ancient One, and whether or not she will be a man or a woman in the film. There's been some speculation about this in the past, and when asked about it in the interview Feige said:

"We get an amazing actress to play an amazing character, and do it in a way that's very unique and doesn't fall into any outdated stereotypes that sometimes pop up in the comics from years past. It's funny you ask 'Will Tilda Swinton be playing a woman?' and you ask it because she does an amazing job of being sort of ambiguous in terms of gender. I think you'll see us playing it in ways that she's played other characters that way. Clearly she's a woman, but it is very ambiguous in her portrayal."

So that pretty much answers that question. It's going to be interesting to see how all of these characters will actually be portrayed in the film. I loved the concept art that I saw for it at D23, and I'm excited to see more of their vision for this character.

Benedict Cumberbatch is set to play Stephen Strange, and the movie is set to be released in theaters on November 4th, 2016.

Last year we brought you a Kill Count video for Arnold Schwarzenegger, which showed you the many people that he has killed over the course of the films that he's starred in. The latest Kill Count movie supercut comes from Benjamin Combes, and this one focuses on the people who have died at the hands of Jean-Claude Van Damme. Here is a note from the creator with the rules that he followed when putting together the video:

UGE THANKS to JCVD wich have sweetened my childhood with helicopter kicks and face splits, I hope it will be a pleasure for you to watch this video as much as it was for me to make it.

THE RULES
1. Guns, blades and projectiles always kill unless otherwise depicted
2. Close proximity explosions kill unless otherwise depicted
3. Indirect kills as a result of an explicit action by JCVD count
4. Kills must occur on screen

GAME OF THRONES Movie Development Debunked by George R.R. Martin

game-of-thrones-movie-development-debunked-by-george-rr-martin-social.jpg

Yesterday a big rumor hit that George R.R. Martin confirmed that HBO was developing a Game of Thrones film that he would not be a part of. He also reportedly offered up a few details on what that movie might entail. As it turns out that information might not actually be true.

After the rumor hit, Martin responded to it on his personal blog:

"[It's] completely false. No one is working on any movie just now. And if there was a movie, it would not be about Robert's Rebellion."

So it looks like those dreams of a movie have been dashed... for now. Martin has previously confirmed that there has been talk of a Game of Thrones movie, but as of right now nothing is in development. And even if there was, HBO probably wouldn't want him to say anything about it.

HBO is definitely considering a Game of Thrones movie, we just don't know for sure whether or not they plan on actually moving on it yet.
