Are These the Top 10 Best Movie Villains of All Time?

$

Every good story needs an antagonist, and some villains are more evil than others. There are definitely certain degrees of villainy, and audiences connect with villains in certain ways. Because of that, it's hard to come up with a definitive Top 10 list that everyone can agree on. That didn't stop CineFix from making an attempt, though! They created a list called Top 10 Movie Villains of All Time, and it came with the following note:

They’re not good, per se, but a compelling villain can be great. Having an effective, interesting bad guy is almost as important to a movie as having a worthy hero. And in some cases, more so.

I think they made a very valiant effort, and every villain that made the list is a solid choice. Are there any villains on the list that you would take out and replace with someone else?

Here's the full list they provide written out just in case you can't watch the video:

Sauron
The Lord of The Rings Trilogy, The Hobbit Trilogy (2001-2014)
This guy is pretty much the embodiment of pure evil. Heck, for the majority of the movie, he’s not even an embodiment… just an evil evil all-seeing eye.

Lil Ze
City of God (2002)
First among villains that scared the sh*t out of us, since he’s an unpredictable monster in what’s not strictly a monster movie.

Max Cady
Cape Fear (1962 & 1991)
Max Cady is relentless, literally going to the ends of the earth for revenge. And he’s terrifying in the process.

The Joker
The Dark Knight (2008)
There’s reason Batman and the Joker have been antagonists for the better part of a century: because the Clown Prince of Crime laughing chaos is the perfect foil to Batman’s grim, studied quest for justice.

The Reverent Harry Powell
The Night of The Hunter (1955)
We’re not sure we’ve ever enjoyed hating a movie character more than this self-righteous, yet utterly despicable reverend. Man, we really want to smack him in the face.

Hannibal Lecter
The Silence of The Lambs (1991) and sequels
Dr. Lecter enjoys fine music, is soft spoken, and sympathetic, yet he eats people’s body parts and has to be kept fully restrained. Yet… we still kinda like him. Hannibal’s complexity makes him one of the greatest movie villains of all time.

Hans Beckert
M (1931)
It’s rare to see an honest dose of humanity mixed in with movie villains, much less in 80-year-old films about child murderers, but when we see Hans Beckert’s clearly trapped in his own psychological prison, it changes the entire tone of the story, and that certainly makes it worth a shot on our list.

Anton Chigurh
No Country For Old Man (2007)
Perhaps the only thing more terrifying than realizing the humanity in the villain is coming face-to-face with an utter lack of humanity. And that’s what Javier Bardem manages to portray an Anton Chigurh.

Norman Bates
Psycho (1960)
Norman Bates is certainly a psycho, but it’s a chillingly human kind of crazy. He’s a nice young man who loves his mother, but in the most twisted way imaginable.

Frank Booth
Blue Velvet (1986)
Looking at Frank Booth’s twisted perversions is almost, just, maybe like looking into a dark mirror at ourselves. And that’s what makes him the most frightening - and greatest - villain in movie history.

Looks Like THE CROW Reboot Is Going to Lose Another Director

For those of you who are fans of The Crow, who don't want the reboot that's been in development to be made, you're in luck, because it probably won't. This new adaptation of The Crow has been in development for years and it has already gone through a few directors. The latest director to be attached is Corin Hardy, who directed an upcoming awesomely creepy horror film called The Hallow. Now it sounds like Hardy is about to walk away from the project as well.

The news comes from The Wrap, who says that this is a result of the Relativity Media bankruptcy. Producer Edward R. Pressman filed an objection to the inclusion of the project among the studio’s assets as it prepares for a sale. The report explains:

"Relativity has invested 'in excess of $7 million' in 'The Crow' remake, including $2.5 million to exercise the options to acquire and maintain the property’s sequel, prequel and remake rights, according to the filing. Those rights revert back to Pressman if principal photography does not start within three years from when the deal was signed, which is now 18 months away.
"Pressman filed the objection in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New York because he claims the stalking-horse bidder for Relativity’s film and TV assets hasn’t demonstrated 'adequate assurance of future performance' and he’s concerned that Relativity’s new owner won’t immediately have the resources to finance the film and release it on 'no less than 1,000 screens' in North America, which requires an investment of 'no less than $10 million to $12 million.'"

Because of all this bankruptcy madness, the project is “in danger of losing the services of the director of the picture … who is widely regarded as a key creative element. Thus, the production of the picture is imploding even as the time to make the picture is running out under the Crow contract.”

I can see why Hardy would want to bail. The whole thing is on shaky ground, and nothing is guaranteed to happen with the production at this point. If I had other project options to work on, I'd definitely consider taking them at this point.

Several other studios are interested in snatching up the rights to The Crow from Relativity, but the production company isn't really entertaining any of the offers because apparently it's their most valuable asset, which is kind of sad.

The Crow also doesn't have an actor attached. The most recent actor to be attached to the lead role was Boardwalk Empire's Jack Huston, but he dropped out earlier this year.

I was actually looking forward to seeing what Hardy would do with the movie, especially with The Crow creator James O'Barr working on developing the project. One thing is for sure, and that's that this comic adaptation isn't going to happen anytime soon, if ever.

Marvel's Luke Cage is currently in production and shooting in New York. Some photos from the set of the series feature Mike Colter as the title character have leaked. They also feature actor Frankie Faison (The Wire). There's no word on who Faison is actually playing in the series. There's a good chance that he could be playing “Pop,” but that remains to be seen. Check out the images below the information on the series:

After a sabotaged experiment leaves him with super strength and unbreakable skin, Luke Cage becomes a fugitive trying to rebuild his life in modern day Harlem, New York City. But he is soon pulled out of the shadows and must fight a battle for the heart of his city–forcing him to confront a past he had tried to bury.

The series also stars Simone Missick as Misty Knight, Frank Whaley as Rafael Scarfe, Mahershala Ali as Cottonmouth, Theo Rossi as Shades, and Alfre Woodard as Mariah Dillard, and Rosario Dawson reprises her role from Daredevil as Claire Temple.

The series is set to premiere in 2016.

Sigourney Weaver Will Have a Cameo in GHOSTBUSTERS Reboot

Ghostbusters reboot director Paul Feig has announced that Sigourney Weaver is the latest original cast member who will appear in the upcoming film. He tweeted the following message to his followers not long after he unleashed the fury on the reboot haters.

There's no word on who she will exactly play, but it won't be Dana Barrett because as we've previously heard, this movie will in no way be connected to the original films. Weaver joins Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson, who have all been confirmed to have cameos in the movie.

It's cool that they are all showing their support for the reboot by appearing in it, but the fact that none of them are reprising their roles from the original film kinda takes all the fun out of it for me. I'll be honest, the fact the film is being rebooted in the first place takes all the fun out of it. But if the movie turns out to be good, I'll give it credit where credit is due.

Ghostbusters opens in theaters on July 15th, 2016.

Review: HEROES REBORN Returns To Original Form and I'm Back In

$

You're going to read a lot of pretentious reviews about the continuation of Heroes.

"It's no longer original to do a superhero show in this day and age."

"Oh wow, short glimpses jumping around into people's lives not giving you time to make a connection...great job."

"How long until they screw us over again?"

F*** those guys. Heroes: Reborn is everything I wanted it to be. It reminded me why I was initially hooked back in 2006, and it showed me I can become hooked again.

To bring you up to speed in as spoiler free a way as possible...we open with a world where Evos are well-known and accepted into the world. That changes on June 13th, and those with special powers are now once again on the run. For the first two hours we primarily travel alongside with HRG himself Noah Bennett as he works to put the pieces together of a day he's long forgot two years later.

A lot of sites are really bashing the June 13th event in the show, saying it's a cheap allusion to 9/11. That's not a fair comparison. A disaster in the hub of Odessa, Texas is only comparable to one of our nations greatest tragedies in the sense it was a terrorist attack. In truth, especially when you look at the events that followed through the episode, it's much more akin to the attack on Pearl Harbor.

A big attack happens and now those with powers are being registered with the states, persecuted, and overall treated like second class citizens, much like the Japanese-Americans during WWII. Some do register, others remember the past and hide, and some flee to surrounding countries. Our story mainly focuses on the fallout of June 13th still happening two years later.

I've already mentioned you see Bennett, but two other past faces make appearances as well in small roles. Other than that, we meet a fresh cast as follows...

  • Tommy Collins: A teenage Evo with a spoilerish ability that won't be revealed until about midway through the first hour...it's pretty cool though. I enjoyed him and am guessing we will see much more of him throughout the course of the show.
  • Carlos Guttierez: Twenty something Hispanic male living in East Los Angeles. Presumably Non Evo war veteran who returns home to a masked Luchador keeping his neighborhood safe.
  • Miko Otomo: Japanese girl who can enter and leave a video game at will. Probably the coolest power in the show and much publicized. Don't act like I spoiled that for you.
  • Ren Shimosawa: He's the Ando to Miko's Hiro. He knows the game Miko can travel through very well and becomes integral to her success.

We saw some other characters, but for the main part those are your Heroes for the time being. If I had to pick a favorite I'd goL Tommy, Miko and Ren, and Carlos. Tommy will definitely have a central role in the show it looks like, which is good because I enjoyed his segments the most.

The bad guy situation is interesting right now. Primatech is for all intents and purposes dead and buried, but vigilantes and non Evo groups are out in droves looking to rid the country of their powered friends. Our primary antagonists are played by Zachary Levi (Chuck) and Judith Collins. Levi does well in his role of conflicted killer while Collins truly shines as being a crazy, heartless bitch...for lack of a better word. I absolutely hated her by the end of the episode, and that's a good thing.

Then we have the mystery guy. Big man with a suitcase full of pennies. It's not entirely clear how his powers work, but it involves pennies, and at the moment it's really hard to tell if his intentions are good or bad.

The story was what you would expect...you learned a little but not a lot. The full story was scattered in bits and pieces through each character, and it's up to you to piece the mystery together before it all eventually ties together. If you don't like that, well. you likely didn't like Heroes in it's initial run, so don't expect a new and shaken-up formula going in.

There were a lot of things I loved in the first two hours of the show. The effects are just about as impressive as television superhero shows get, and they were ample throughout the two hours. There was lots of mystery and lots of action and always something to keep me enthralled and eagerly awaiting the end of the commercial break. It felt like when I first watched Heroes, essentially...and that's a good thing.

Oh yeah and your favorite soundtrack is back...mountain chants and all.

People say "blah people with powers," but that's not what got me into the series initially. It's not just people with powers, it's people with oddly specific powers. Each character has a power that's just as limiting as it is cool. It leaves out the option for "Superman" types (which ultimately killed the series for me in its first run) and leaves you with the conclusion that no one is really safe. These people may be special but they aren't leaps and bounds above their human oppressors. That's what has always made it refreshing to me.

I also loved that we didn't see the entire old cast shoved down our throats to give us that nostalgic feeling. I was cool with who appeared, and to start the show with Bennett was, in my opinion. the best you can start it with.

What I didn't like? The video game that Miko jumps into...my God it looks like a CGI Claymation. It's supposed to be an MMO in the same vein as WOW which I realize isn't the top tier in quality graphics...but damn. I felt like I was watching an episode of Reboot.

Honestly this may look a little better.

Honestly this may look a little better.

Really other than that I can't say much else that was negative. Whatever other issues I had they weren't massive enough for me to think back on this morning. Ultimately, they got me back. Past transgressions will go to the back burner for now, and I'm plugged in and ready to see how it pans out. Yeah, the story is pushing an angle that I don't believe for a second will pan out the way they are desperately trying to make you think it will... but it's more about the ride, and I enjoyed my two hour trip. Let the others on the review circuit continue to bash based on past transgressions...I'll be having a good time enjoying the good times while they're here.

Matt Damon Reveals New Story Details for BOURNE 5

Jason Bourne is coming back for a fifth chapter in the Bourne film franchise. The production is currently underway, and in a recent interview with NY Daily News, Matt Damon offers some additional details regarding the new movie and the character he plays.

“[Bourne] has his memory back, but that doesn’t mean he knows everything. It’s 12 years since Jason Bourne has been on the grid. So we have to answer the questions, Where’s he been? What’s he doing? What gets him going again? So once we solved all that, then we had a movie.”

Yeah, these details definitely raise more questions than they answer. Damon is just keeping the intrigue alive. During a previous interview, Damon talked a little bit about the inspiration behind story they are telling:

"Without giving too much of it away, it’s Bourne through an austerity-riddled Europe and in a post-Snowden world. It seems like enough has changed, you know? There are all these kinds of arguments about spying and civil liberties and the nature of democracy."

The actor also said that the movie starts in Greece and ends in Las Vegas, which will definitely be an interesting setting for its climactic conclusion. Paul Greengrass is directing the film, which also stars Tommy Lee Jones as a high-ranking CIA officer, Alicia Vikander as the female lead, Vincent Cassel as the villain, and Julia Stiles reprising her role as Nicky Parsons.

High-Resolution Movie Posters With All of the Text Removed

We've written a lot about movie posters at GeekTyrant over the years because, like most film fans, we love a great piece of poster art. Some posters set out to capture the essence of a movie, some try to draw viewers in with mystery, and others just try to get your curiosity churning with crazy imagery. We spoke about the evolution of poster art in one of our podcast episodes a while ago, and we posted a video last year that talks about the downfall in creativity in studio film posters recently.

Redditor joinyouinthesun has taken 80 movie posters, removed the text from all of them, and posted high resolution versions of them online for film fans to enjoy. Aside from the myriad Photoshop opportunities this could provide for those who are interested in messing around with text placement, this is a nice chance to take a good hard look at what poster art used to be like and hope that it returns to this level of artistry once again.

J.K. Rowling's HARRY POTTER AND THE CURSED CHILD Play Being Split Into Two Parts

$

If you want to point a finger at the reason why practically every young adult film franchise splits its final entry into two parts — often when the clearly don't deserve an extra film to tell their stories — look no further than Warner Bros.' Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The studio realized they didn't have enough major moneymaking franchises as the conclusion to the Harry Potter saga approached, so they made the (at the time) shrewd move to split its final entry into two movies, hiding behind the excuse that it wouldn't make the filmmakers feel as if he had to cram too much in and excise some story threads. Now pretty much every trilogy is being split into four movies just to make some extra cash (cough Hunger Games cough). It's unfortunately become common practice in Hollywood.

Well, if history repeats itself, it may become common practice on the stage as well. J.K. Rowling is working on a stage production called Harry Potter and the Cursed Child that debuts in London next year, and the author has taken to Twitter to announce that the new play will be split into two parts:

On the official Pottermore website, the play's director, John Tiffany, offered this explanation as to why it's being split:

"I’ve never worked on anything quite like this before. Usually in theatre you’re adapting existing material or creating an entirely new play. With the Cursed Child we have been given the unique opportunity to explore some of the most cherished books and beloved characters ever written, yet work with J.K. Rowling to tell a story from that world that no one yet knows – it’s exhilarating.
"It shares a scale and ambition with all the Harry Potter stories so in order to do this justice we have decided to present the play in two parts."

Producer Sonia Friedman told The Daily Mail (via /Film) that the parts "can be seen on consecutive days in the same week or in some instances on the same day," and the report indicates that though schedules are still being worked out, "parts one and two will be performed on consecutive weekdays, while at weekends, audiences will be able to watch both parts in one day."

Rumor has it the story — which is not a musical, but will have music in it — takes place in Harry's pre-Hogwarts days, but Rowling has repeatedly stated that it's not a prequel, so we'll have to wait and see exactly how that works out. Are you going to head to London's West End next summer to see the debut of this now-two-part show?

BATMAN: ARKHAM KNIGHT Returning to PC Soon

The sheer number of complaints about the game ultimately caused major distributors like Steam to pull the game from their storefronts. Following the recent batch of DLC and updates however, WB Games issued a statement claiming that the game will be relaunching for PC users "in the coming weeks." While the statement doesn't provide any exact dates or details about the game's return, it at least indicates that progress is being made and that we should, hopefully, see a stable version of the game back in the Steam Store soon.

A patch was released shortly after launch which fixed many of the bugs, but not before the damage was done. A number of gamers are likely to shy away from WB Games' future PC launches as a result of Arkham Knight's initial failures. Whether this re-release can bring those who were negatively affected by launch-day problems back on board remains to be seen.

Original Cast of THE WARRIORS Reunites For One Last Subway Ride to Coney Island

"Warriors...come out to plaayyyyy!"

Walter Hill's 1979 film The Warriors focuses on a gang trying to make it across New York City to their home turf of Coney Island after being framed for the murder of a rival gang leader. Controversial upon its original release, the movie has since become a cult classic, and earlier this month, fans organized a festival on Coney Island to celebrate the movie, and many of the original cast members showed up. Rolling Stone was there, and they captured a quick little video of the original gang riding the subway together one final time. I've only seen the movie once, and that was probably about ten years ago, so this makes me want to revisit it.

John Goodman Joins KONG: SKULL ISLAND

John Goodman is the latest actor to join Legendary Pictures' Kong: Skull Island. He will be playing a character named Randa, a government official who leads an expedition to Skull Island.

The story follows Tom Hiddleston as he and his team of explorers venture to the mysterious and dangerous home of the king of the apes. The adventure will take them deep inside the treacherous, primordial island. According to Legendary, the "story honors the foundations of existing King Kong lore, but places it in an entirely new, distinct timeline." It was previously revealed that the film would be set in Detroit in 1971, but it's unclear whether that is still the case.

The movie is being directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts (The Kings of Summer), and the cast also includes Brie Larson, Toby Kebbell, Jason Mitchell, Corey Hawkins, John C. Reilly, Samuel L. Jackson, and Tom Wilkinson. The project is expected to start shooting this fall, and will hit theaters on March 10th, 2017.

I just hope Samuel L. Jackson says, "Hold on to your butts."

Six Reasons You Should Respect Michael Bay, Even If You Think His Movies Suck

Michael Bay has his fair share of haters, but he's also admired by people like Steven Spielberg and Christopher Nolan. It's easy to despise Bay's movies, and it's arguably easier to not like the man himself based on his sometimes abrasive personality and the tons of stories that have come out over the years of how he treats people on his sets. But if you consider yourself a fan of cinema, I think it's pretty clear that a line can be drawn between liking Bay's overall final products and appreciating the man for his directorial skill and striking ability to capture kinetic, indelible images that no one else can (and there are plenty of pale imitations to choose from which prove that last part).

Our own Lucas Lowman wrote an essay about this topic, and now Cinefix is here with a video that break down six reasons you have to respect Bay, and while there's maybe a bit too much importance placed on his perceived thoughts on race (I mean, did you guys see Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen? Casting Martin Lawrence and Will Smith in Bad Boys doesn't make up for creating those racist robots), there are some pretty good points to be made here. Check it out below:

Jake Gyllenhaal and Benedict Cumberbatch Getting Electric in THE CURRENT WAR

$

While The Current War may sound like a title about a film detailing our latest international conflict, it's actually about the battle over the transmission of electricity in the late 1800s. Based on a Black List script by Michael Mitnick (The Giver), the story centers on Thomas Edison, who wanted direct current (DC) to win out, and George Westinghouse, who introduced alternate current (AC) as a potential replacement.

THR reports that Jake Gyllenhaal is in talks to play Edison and Benedict Cumberbatch is in talks to play Westinghouse in the movie for Me and Earl and The Dying Girl director Alfonso Gomez-Rajon and The Weinstein Company. This sounds like a great collaboration waiting to happen, so fingers crossed it all works out. I wonder how the film will treat Edison, because if you'll remember in The Prestige, he was basically viewed as an unseen villain opposed to inventor Nikola Tesla (David Bowie). Either way, this is a fascinating story that hasn't really been given its due on the big screen before.

Marvel has released the first poster for Agent Carter Season 2 featuring Hayley Atwell sporting a slick and stylish new dress in 1947 Los Angeles. She looks like she's ready to get comfortable in L.A.'s warm climate. I'm so excited to see where this next chapter of her story will take her.

Agent Carter will be part of Marvel’s Television Presents: Agents of Primetime panel at NYCC on Friday, October 9th. If they have any footage to show off, I hope it's released online shortly after the panel. If it is, we'll make sure to post it on the site for you!

Marvel’s Agent Carter returns for a second season of adventure and intrigue, starring Hayley Atwell in the titular role of the unstoppable secret agent for the SSR (Strategic Scientific Reserve). Dedicated to the fight against new atomic age threats in the wake of World War II, Peggy must now journey from New York City to Los Angeles for her most dangerous assignment yet. But even as she discovers new friends, a new home — and perhaps even a new love — she’s about to find out that the bright lights of the post-war Hollywood mask a more sinister threat to everyone she is sworn to protect.

THE IMITATION GAME Director Tackling Remake of a Classic Agatha Christie Murder Mystery

$
0
0

Last week, I decided to check out the 1965 movie Ten Little Indians, which is based on famous mystery writer Agatha Christie's classic mystery novel And Then There Were None. I'd seen the title compared to some modern films in plot descriptions before, but I'd never seen the movie, and after watching it, I was shocked at how influential it was on 1985's murder mystery Clue. It's always fascinating to me to see the origins of my favorite films pop up in older movies.

In any case, Deadline reports that 20th Century Fox has acquired the rights to Christie's novel and plans to create an updated adaptation.

"The novel follows 10 strangers who are tempted to come to Soldier Island for different reasons. They soon realize they were brought there under false pretenses and are trapped, and are being bumped off one by one for crimes we learn they committed but were never punished for. They begin to realize that the killer is one of the 10."

The Imitation Game director Morten Tyldum has been tapped to direct it after he tackles his sci-fi romance Passengers starring Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt. He's apparently a big fan of the novel and helped pitch the project to Christie's estate, which resulted in Fox earning the rights. This should pull in an A-list cast, and I'm excited to see a direct modern adaptation of the story. The only thing I'm hesitant about is the writer: Eric Heisserer is writing the screenplay, and his credits include A Nightmare on Elm Street remake, The Thing remake, and Final Destination 5. He shouldn't have to deviate from the source material too much: it's served as the basis for at least four different film adaptations already, and the story is strong enough as it is.

Colin Trevorrow's THE BOOK OF HENRY Adds Sarah Silverman, Lee Pace, and Dean Norris

$

Before he heads off to a galaxy far, far away to direct Star Wars: Episode IX, writer/director Colin Trevorrow will direct a movie called The Book of Henry. It's being described as a "dark family dramedy centering on a mother and her genius son," which sounds a little outside the scope of what the director has handled in the past. But that's exactly why I'm interested in watching it — it'll give us a better idea of Trevorrow's range as a filmmaker.

Naomi Watts, Jacob Tremblay (who's having a breakout moment with his performance as Brie Larson's young son in Room), and Jaeden Lieberher were already attached, and now THR reports that Sarah Silverman, Lee Pace, and Dean Norris have joined the cast in undisclosed roles. The great thing about all three of these actors is that they've proven adept at both comedy and drama, so it's impossible to know what kind of characters they'll play here. Like Trevorrow, I'll be interested to see how they can continue to expand their ranges here. Hopefully this collaboration between this great cast and filmmaker can produce something memorable.
