Christian Bale Visits Colorado Shooting Victims

$

Here's a bit of news that made me happy today. During some free time, Dark Knight Rises star Christain Bale took a quite trip to Aurora, Colorado to visit the victims of last week's horrific theater shooting. Bale did this on his own accord.

Time opened up for the actor after Warner Bros. cancelled the premieres and press appearances for The Dark Knight Rises in Mexico and Japan. How awesome is that! Bale didn't have to go, but he did, and I'm sure it meant a lot to those people struggling with what they had gone through. Here's what he had to say in a previous statement...

Words cannot express the horror that I feel. I cannot begin to truly understand the pain and grief of the victims and their loved ones, but my heart goes out to them.

I know Bale visiting these people isn't going to fix everything, but it's a selfless act. It shows that he really does care, and that means something.

Jon Favreau Joins Martin Scorsese's THE WOLF OF WALL STREET

As Jon Favreau is prepping to direct that big screen adaption of the Broadway musical hit Jersey Boys, he's joined the cast of Martin Scorsese's next film project The Wolf of Wall Street. Favreau will join Leonardo DiCaprio, Jon Bernthal, Jonah Hill and Kyle Chandler

The movie is based on the memoir by Jordan Belfort. DiCaprio plays Belfort, "who experiences a dramatic rise on Wall Street, and gets lost in the drugs and other excess of a hard partying lifestyle that comes hand in hand with all that money. His downfall is precipitous, and he spent 22 months in jail before straightening out his life." Chandler will play FBI agent Coleman, "who built the case against Belfort and took him down." Hill will take on the role of Belfort’s close friend and business partner who’s "persuaded by Belfort to quit his job in the furniture business to jump into the volatile world of stocks." Favreau will play a securities lawyer. He will make this movie before he jumps into production on Jersey Boys.

It's always awesome to see Favreau get in front of the camera! It's also cool that he's working with Scorsese.

Here's the full description of the book:

By day he made thousands of dollars a minute. By night he spent it as fast as he could, on drugs, sex, and international globe-trotting. From the binge that sank a 170-foot motor yacht, crashed a Gulfstream jet, and ran up a $700,000 hotel tab, to the wife and kids who waited for him at home, and the fast-talking, hard-partying young stockbrokers who called him king and did his bidding, here, in his own inimitable words, is the story of the ill-fated genius they called…

In the 1990s Jordan Belfort, former kingpin of the notorious investment firm Stratton Oakmont, became one of the most infamous names in American finance: a brilliant, conniving stock-chopper who led his merry mob on a wild ride out of the canyons of Wall Street and into a massive office on Long Island. Now, in this astounding and hilarious tell-all autobiography, Belfort narrates a story of greed, power, and excess no one could invent.

Reputedly the prototype for the film Boiler Room, Stratton Oakmont turnedmicrocap investing into a wickedly lucrative game as Belfort’s hyped-up, coked-out brokers browbeat clients into stock buys that were guaranteed to earn obscene profits–for the house. But an insatiable appetite for debauchery, questionable tactics, and a fateful partnership with a breakout shoe designer named Steve Madden would land Belfort on both sides of the law and into a harrowing darkness all his own.

From the stormy relationship Belfort shared with his model-wife as they ran a madcap household that included two young children, a full-time staff of twenty-two, a pair of bodyguards, and hidden cameras everywhere—even as the SEC and FBI zeroed in on them—to the unbridled hedonism of his office life, here is the extraordinary story of an ordinary guy who went from hustling Italian ices at sixteen to making hundreds of millions. Until it all came crashing down…

TAKEN 2 - International Poster

$

20th Century Fox has released this new international poster for Taken 2. The movie was directed by Olivier Megaton (ColombianaTransporter 3), and Liam Neeson has returned to get himself kidnapped. Of course he'll fight his way out of it and win! The movie looks just as good as the first one, I just hope that they change things up enough so it doesn't feel like the same movie.

Here's the synopsis:

Neeson returns as Bryan Mills, the retired CIA agent with a particular set of skills who stopped at nothing to save his daughter Kim from Albanian kidnappers. When the father of one of the kidnappers swears revenge and takes Bryan and his wife hostage during their family vacation in Istanbul, Bryan enlists Kim to help them escape, and uses the same advanced level of special forces tactics to get his family to safety and systematically take out the kidnappers one by one.

The movie is set to hit theaters on October 5th. Do you think Taken 2 will be a carbon copy of the first film?

How Nightcrawler Was Almost a DC Villain-Type Character

$

0

Here's an interesting bit of comic-book history that puts quite a different perspective on Nightcrawler and his origins. Don't worry, Nightcrawler is still the same kind hearted teleporter that you've come to know and love since his debut in Marvel Comics Giant-Size X-Men #1 back in 1975. But before coming to Marvel, Nightcrawler was envisioned as a "rotten villain-type" character that hailed from an alien planet.

Dave Cockrum, who also co-created other classic X-Men like Storm and Colossus, initially created Nightcrawler back when he was the artist for DC Comics' Legion of Super-Heroes. But after a a dispute with DC, Cockrum headed to Marvel, along with Nightcrawler, who was just a drawing and a paragraph of information. The character design, along with the X conveniently already there on his uniform, and his teleporting abilities stayed in tact, but with the help of writers like Len Wein and Chris Claremont, his origins were given a complete overhaul to fit into the X-Men universe.

Taken from Cockrum's original background notes, here's the beloved Nightcrawler we know, compared to the Nightcrawler that would have ended up at DC:

Real Name: Kurt Wagner - Baalshazzar

Birthplace: Earth, mutant son of Mystique - Alien from a parallel dimension

Allegiance: Member of the X-Men - "Rotten villain-type" who merely "chooses to aid the law."

Sense of Humor:  Always playing pranks on people, earning him the nickname "Trickster" - He would "think a truckload of dead babies was hilarious."

Peter Jackson Pushing Third HOBBIT Movie Forward!

$

It looks like we're getting closer to seeing the Hobbit trilogy that Peter Jackson teased at Comic-Con! The director wants the third Hobbit film to happen, and he's now in talks with Warner Bros. and taking the steps to making it happen! So the trilogy idea went from being "premature" to if they do it, they have to do it soon.

According to THR they are "exploring the logistics of what it would take to make another movie. Those talks are said to have accelerated in recent days, with the studio on board if the right financial arrangements can be achieved. That includes securing new actor deals for the expansive cast as well as shoring up certain rights associated with the property (The Hobbit has a long a tortured rights history.)"

A studio insider said, “If we’re going to do it, we have to make a decision soon. It’s strongly driven by the filmmakers’ desire to tell more of the story.” I have no doubt that Jackson will do everything in his power to make this happen, and I truly hope it does! It would be amazing to see another epic middle earth trilogy! The source continued, "It’s about taking the chance to tell more of the incredible tale with the cast we have assembled."

In a previous interview, Jackson explained how he would be able to take the short Hobbit book and turn it into three films:

…we haven’t just adapted The Hobbit; we’ve adapted that book plus great chunks of his appendices and woven it all together. The movie explains where Gandalf goes; the book never does. We’ve explained it using Tolkien’s own notes. That helped inform the tone of the movie, because it allowed us to pull in material he wrote in The Lord of the Rings era and incorporate it with The Hobbit. So we kept the charm and the whimsy of the fairy tale quality through the characters. Through the dwarves and Bilbo, who is more of a humorous character. He doesn’t try to be funny but we find him funny and find his predicament more amusing than that of Frodo in The Lord of the Rings. That was more serious. So the whimsy is there, but tonally I wanted to make it as similar to The Lord of the Rings, because I wanted it to be possible for the people, the crazy people in the world who want to watch these films back to back one day…

I can't wait to see how this turns out! I'm extremely excited to see how he tells this epic tale! How do you feel about seeing a third Hobbit film, and what do you hope to see from it?

The first installment, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, is set for release on December 14th. The second film, called The Hobbit: There An Back Again, is set to hit theaters on Dec. 13th, 2013. I imagine that the third film would be released in December of 2014.

CAPTAIN AMERICA 2 Co-Director Anthony Russo Discusses the Film

We still know very little about Marvel's Captain America: The Winter Soldier movie, but the title offers up a big hint of what we might see. Marvel is doing some awesome things in the comic book movie business, and I hope they can keep it up as they develop phase two of their master plan.

Co-director Anthony Russo has given a couple of interviews in which he discusses the movie without really revealing anything. But it gives us a sense of what he and his brother are planning for the film.

Here's a rundown of what he told IGN:

On how working on Community will help with the movie:

It sort of came out of the blue, but [Marvel] were big fans of Community. You can sort of draw a line between some things we did on Community and a Marvel movie. I think if you look at some of the big genre episodes -- you know, the paintball episodes, etc. -- there’s a cinematic sensibility being explored there that is in the language of those films.

Marvel is a big company, and they’ve made a lot of movies. These narratives are connected to each other. That’s not typical for a feature film, but television people are used to that. There are seasons and seasons of a show, and the history is very important it, obviously... My brother and I were comic book geeks from a young age, and big fantasy geeks. We got to talk to [Marvel] in detail about that. They knew that we understood the brand and their characters really well. We were just incredibly passionate about the movie, and they felt that it was the right match.

On how they will handle the character this time around:

We’re trying to grow him as a character. Certainly, he’s come a long way from where he started in World War II to where he is in modern-day America. So the character has room for growth because of that huge journey he’s been on, number one. Number two, the appeal of these movies is the ensemble. Captain America isn’t the only character in the film, and there are other characters that are perhaps lighter in nature.

On if we'll see anyone from the Avengers in the film:

That’s something Marvel will shoot me for if I tell you.

The fact that Marvel will shoot him if he says anything tells me that we'll most likely see at least one character from The Avengers movie.

Here's what Russo had to say about the movie in a separate interview with The Huffington Post:

On how they sold themselves to land the gig:

We were comic book geeks from a young age and big fantasy geeks. We got to talk to them in detail about that history. They knew that we understood the brand really well and the characters really well. It was a long process, actually, of talking to them over and over again, through a series of meetings over a long period of time. And I think they just -- we were really passionate about the movie, incredibly passionate about the movie. They felt that, and they felt like it was the right match.

On what appealed to them in Ed Brubaker's "Winter Soldier" comic book arc:

Well, we like the [story.] I can't talk too much about specifics, that's the way Marvel handles things. I can say in general that there's sort of a darker, edgier sensibility at work there that we found appealing, and that is going find its way into Captain [America] in the modern day.

On if we'll see any WW2 flashbacks:

Certainly Cap has this complicated history. We're making the movie for first-time viewers, not just for fans, so, because Cap does have this complicated history -- he was this skinny guy who became a super-soldier, he was born back then and he's living [now] -- in the storytelling, you need to convey that to an audience who doesn't know Cap's story.

On working with heavy visual effects:

They said to us early on in the interview process, "We don't expect you to know anything [about special effects and so forth] -- you don't have to know everything about this stuff, because we're here for that." They're very respectful of directors. They're an amazing company to work with.

On whether any comic writers or creators have offered any advice:

We're actually going to have lunch with Brubaker soon. But no, they haven't been involved. In the same way that they would develop a new comic-book series, they give its own space to develop. But certainly everybody is aware [of what's in the comics], has read everything, is aware of all their other material. But they do like each thing to be its own, organic process, which is nice.

On what from The Avengers would he like to interpret into the movie:

For me, what I loved about the movie, which is what many if not most people loved about the movie, were the character interactions, those great character moments. You have people rubbing up against each other in a way that's exciting and combustible. While all the special effects and the adventure, the thrill and the danger [are] fun, it was those character-to-character interactions are the heart of the film. So that's what [we'll hope to have].

Marvel chose these guys to direct this sequel for a reason, and I'm looking forward to seeing their vision explode on the big screen! What do you think about what Russo had to say about the movie?

Stunning Trailer for Ang Lee's LIFE OF PI

20th Century Fox has released the first full trailer for Ang Lee's Life of Pi, and damn it looks beautifully stunning! We were shown a clip of the film in theaters before Prometheus and it was a little odd. A lot of people didn't know what to make of it, but this trailer shows us an absolutely wonderful looking film. It looks like a solid story, it's visually incredible, and I'm impressed.

Here's a short synopsis:

Director  (Brokeback Mountain, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) creates a groundbreaking movie event about a young man who survives a tragic disaster at sea and is hurtled into an epic journey of adventure and discovery. While marooned on a lifeboat, he forms an amazing and unexpected connection with the ship's only other survivor -- a fearsome Bengal tiger.

The movie is set to hit theaters later this year on November 21st, and this trailer sold me on seeing it. Watch the trailer for yourself and let us know what you think of it!

First Look at Tom Hanks and Halle Berry in CLOUD ATLAS

$

This is our first look at Tom HanksHalle BerryJim Broadbent, and Ben Whishaw in the big screen adaptation of David Mitchell‘s novel Cloud Atlas. The movie was co-written and co-directed by Andy and Lana Wachowski (the Matrix trilogy) and Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run).

Each of the cast members take on multiple roles in the film. There are six stories in the movie that the characters will appear in that cross through different genres and time. The stories are thematically related, and they are linked by the intersections of various characters throughout the film. Lana Wachowski had this to say in a statement,

We thought about these individual characters as aspects of larger characters. Their lives are interwoven over one big story that takes place over a thousand years.

"The powerful, inspiring epic Cloud Atlas explores how the actions and consequences of individual lives impact one another throughout the past, the present and the future, as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero, and a single act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution."

The image above is from the story "Sloosha’s Crossin’ an’ Ev’rythin’ After," which takes place in post-apocalyptic Hawaii. It's a sci-fi story of a man (Hanks) who meets an emissary from an advanced civilization (Berry). The image below is from "Letters from Zedelghem" about a composer (Broadbent) and his apprentice (Whishaw).

More images will be released later today so stay tuned! Cloud Atlas is set to premiere at TIFF in October, and will be released in theaters on October 26th! I can't wait to see how this movie turns out! I'm looking forward to it.

Here's a breakdown of each story told in the novel:

The novel consists of six nested stories that take the reader from the remote South Pacific in the nineteenth century to a distant, post-apocalyptic future. Each tale is revealed to be a story that is read (or observed) by the main character in the next. All stories but the last are interrupted at some moment, and after the sixth story concludes at the center of the book, the novel "goes back" in time, "closing" each story as the book progresses in terms of pages but regresses in terms of the historical period in which the action takes place. Eventually, readers end where they started, with Adam Ewing in the Pacific Ocean, circa 1850.

The Pacific Journal of Adam Ewing

Pacific Ocean, circa 1850. Adam Ewing, an American notary's account of a voyage home from the remote Chatham Islands, east of New Zealand. The next character discovers this story as a diary on his patron's bookshelf.

Letters from Zedelghem

Zedelgem, Belgium, 1931. Robert Frobisher, a penniless young English musician, finds work as an amanuensis to a composer living in Belgium. This story is saved in the form of letters to his friend (and implied lover) Rufus Sixsmith, which the next character discovers after meeting Sixsmith.

Half-Lives: The First Luisa Rey Mystery.

Buenas Yerbas, California, 1975. Luisa Rey, a journalist, investigates reports of corruption and murder at a nuclear power plant. The next character is sent this story in the mail, in the form of a manuscript for a novel.

The Ghastly Ordeal of Timothy Cavendish

United Kingdom, early 21st century. Timothy Cavendish, a vanity press publisher, flees the brothers of his gangster client. He gets confined against his will in a nursing home from which he cannot escape. The next character watches a movie dramatisation of this story.

An Orison of Sonmi~451

Nea So Copros (Korea), dystopian near future. Sonmi~451, a genetically-engineered fabricant (clone) server at Papa Song's diner (a proxy for large fast-dining chains), is interviewed before her execution after she rebels against the capitalist totalitarian society that created and exploited her kind. The next character watches Sonmi's story projected holographically in an "orison," a futuristic recording device.

Sloosha's Crossin' an' Ev'rythin' After

Hawaii, post-apocalyptic distant future. Zachry, a tribesman living a primitive life after most of humanity dies during "the Fall," is visited by Meronym, a member of the last remnants of technologically-advanced civilization. This story is told when the protagonist is an old man, to seemingly random strangers around a camp-fire.

Here's a fun red-band outtake reel-type of trailer for the upcoming sci-fi comedy The Watch. This was posted by the film's director Akiva Schaffer (Hot Rod), and it shows some fun footage from the film as well as some behind the scenes hilarity.

The story focuses on a group of suburban fathers and husbands who form a neighborhood watch group as a way to get out of their day-to-day family routines and find themselves defending the Earth from an alien invasion. This most recent international trailer is loaded with a bunch of new footage, and gives us a better look at the characters in the film.

The movie has a fun cast of actors that include Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill, Richard Ayoade, Rosemarie DeWitt, Will Forte, and Billy Crudup. It hits theaters on July 27th, 2012. Watch this latest trailer, and let us know if you're looking forward to this movie!

Jon Favreau Working with Pixar on MAGIC KINGDOM

$

It's been awhile since we heard anything of Jon Favreau's Disney theme park set film Magic Kingdom. I've been wondering if the movie was still happening. After all, the filmmaker has been keeping himself busy with acting gigs, directing a couple of TV pilots, and is now committed to directing a big screen adaptation of Jersey Boys. Thankfully Magic Kingdom is alive and well, he's just taking his time developing it, which isn't a bad thing! He recently explained to Crave that the reason he's taking time on the project is because he can,

I went back to back to back with three movies in a row, Iron Man, Iron Man 2 and Cowboys & Aliens, all of them with release dates announced as I walked in. As I cracked the script for the first time we already knew the date and the poster, in some cases the cast. On this one, Magic Kingdom is a big film. It’s a very special piece of intellectual property with all the characters from the park and the legacy of Walt Disney.

Basically he gets to build this film from the ground up, and he's in the process of perfecting the story with a little help from Pixar.

What we’ve been doing is writing a script, going up to Pixar, meeting with the brain trust, coming back down, bringing on artists, story editors and putting it together as though it were an animated film so that by the time we actually film it, we’ll have a rock solid story. I don’t want to rush anything. I want this thing to be perfect. I want it to be one shot one kill, like a sniper. I want to make sure this movie’s right in the crosshairs that we can really knock it out of the park so to speak.

You can't really argue with that. I think it's great that Favreau has the time to develop the perfect film that he wants! This is a rare thing in Hollywood these days, it seems like everything is being rushed and pushed out as fast as they can get it done. As far as the story goes, the director explains,

It’s going to be a family in the park. It’s an alternate reality version of the park that they get launched into. So much of it is just how it weaves together as a tapestry and what the visuals look like in creating this rich world. It’s informed by everything that I remember and know about the park from going there since I was a small child.

Club 33 is something that we’ve been discussing. I’ve been giving a lot of thought to the vulture in Club 33 as a character. There’s a lot of ideas swirling around now. I don’t know which ones are going to make it in but it’s definitely informed primarily by Walt’s vision of the park, even before and immediately after it opened. A lot of it for people our age there’ll be a nostalgic element to it. People who know Disneyland are going to see that we did our homework, but then it’s ultimately an adventure that’s going to be for the family and for the kids too. I had a lot of fun playing to that type of crowd with Elf and Zathura. This seems to be mixing elements from all the films I’ve done, from Iron Man, Cowboys & Aliens, Zathura, Elf all rolled into one project that really is calling upon everything I’ve learned up to this point.

This sounds like it's going to be a ton of fun! I love that it's being treated like an animated film as well. The fact that the full story and all of the shots will be planned out before they start shooting the movie is pretty awesome. This is how I always felt movie productions should be. It eliminates a ton of problems that studios find themselves in when they start shooting without a completed script. World War Z is a perfect example of how things can go wrong when you're not prepared. Favreau goes on to say,

Fortunately there’s no rush on it. I’ve been working on it as a writer now and we’re looking forward to beginning that long lead prep as you would on an animated film. Then you work your way to where you know what the whole movie is going to be before you ever roll camera. You actually watch it as the Pixar people do and actually watch it on a screen and evaluate it before you ever roll camera.

It's going to be great to see how this movie turns out! Sure, we're going to have to wait awhile but in the end it's going to be worth it. What do you think about how Favreau is approaching Magic Kingdom? Do you like and agree with his filmmaking tactics?

Here are a few clips from a great looking 1930 noir film called The Bat Whispers, and as you watch it, you'll be able to see some similarities to Batman. This film could have actually inspired the creation of Batman, who didn't make his first comic book appearance until 1939.

The movie is extremely well made and has some great shots that I haven't really seen in other films from this era. I'm really impressed by what I saw of this film. According to Daily Motion, the movie "is an early experiment in widescreen film. The Bat Whispers was released in two versions full screen and 65mm this clip is in the 2.00:1 aspect ratio. The fine folks over at Film School Rejects have recut a trailer for the classic sci-fi 2001: A Space Odyssey that would make Stanely Kubrick roll over in his grave. The trailer was basically cut as if the movie was a modern day blockbuster to sell a new generation of movie goers on the film. This trailer is a complete misrepresentation of the movie, but it's interesting to see what it might look like as a sci-fi action film. Watch the trailer and let us know if you like it or not! I personally think that it's funny.

Adam Sandler Adapting Awesome BAD TOYS II Short!

Columbia Pictures and Adam Sandler's Happy Madison Productions have teamed up to develop a big-screen adaptation of Bad Toys II, which is a hybrid animated-live-action short film created Daniel Brunet and Nicolas Douste. It's kind of a parody of Michael Bay's insane style of filmmaking.

The movie uses a combination of live-action, comic book panels, and CG, and is an awesome destructive car chase that starts off with toys on a living room floor. It escalates into a "metal-crunching, tire-screeching, car-crashing levels seen in Bay’s own Bad Boys movies with two wise-cracking cops trying to catch a van of bad guys."

This isn’t the first time Sandler's company has picked up an Internet short to turn into a feature film. They're currently developing a fun looking movie called Pixels for the big screen.

I hadn't even come across this short until today, but it's pretty freakin' awesome! I can see why Sandler wants to turn it a movie. Watch it below and tell us if you like like what you see or not!
