ORION Is a CG Animated Fan Short Based on Jack Kirby's NEW GODS

$

Mario Escudero has created a fun CG animated fan film called "Orion." One of the things that makes this short so cool is that it's based on Jack Kirby's DC Comic New Gods. The short centers on the hero Orion, the son of Darkseid, as he finds himself battling an army of alien creatures on a desolate planet, which I assume is Apokolips. The short may not be feature film quality work, but it's still great and worth checking out.

The Flash returns on October 6th!

Geektastic Art Series with Superheroes and Tattooed Disney Princesses by Joel Santana

I have a fantastic collection of art here to share with you that comes from artist Joel Santana. All of his illustrations are great, and what I like most about his art is he has several different styles that he likes to play with. He's got some gorgeous pin-up style art of Belle and Ariel getting tattoos and several pieces featuring Marvel and DC superheroes. Some of them include those heroes in cute comical situations, while others just have a badass feel to them like Batman and Superman facing off in a boxing ring.

If you like any of the art that you see below, you can click here to purchase a print of your favorite.

Ronda Rousey Set to Star in ROAD HOUSE Remake

ronda-rousey-set-to-star-in-road-house-remake

UFC fighter Ronda Rousey has landed her biggest movie role yet in a remake of the 1989 action movie Road House. The project is set up at MGM Studios and she will take on the lead role previously played by Patrick Swayze in the original movie. They are obviously switching things up.

Rousey has not only been on a rising star in the UFC fighting world, but she's also working her way up in the movie business as well. She's had a few little parts in films over the years, but this is her first real lead role.

The story follows a bouncer who is hired to clean up one of the rowdiest, loudest bars in Missouri, The Double Deuce, and protect the town from a corrupt businessman. This is a role that Rousey should easily slip into because there will be a good amount of ass-kicking. This film is a perfecting stepping stone for her to get bigger movie roles (maybe Captain Marvel?)

MGM is currently on the hunt for a screenwriter and director to take on the project, and they are looking to start production next year. According to Variety:

"Rousey thought the idea of starring in a remake was a great idea but wanted to be respectful when pursuing the project. Sources say Rousey recently reached out to Swayze’s widow, Lisa Niemi, to ask for her blessing to star in the remake, which insiders say Niemi gladly gave."

Some of the other upcoming projects that Rousey is going to be a part of includes her biopic My Fight/Your Fight. Then there's The Athena Project set up at Warner Bros., and Peter Berg's action film Mile 22. She's next set to fight Holly Holm on November 14th.

Video: Two Guys React To SPECTRE Trailer

I hate reaction videos. Why do I want to see you, a complete stranger, reacting to something I have already seen for myself? If you like them, great, maybe you can explain the appeal to me, but as far as the one's I've seen, I'm good. They're always so overblown with hysterics that I just sit there like "it's just a movie," which sucks because that's not really how I feel...but it's their reaction that's making me feel that way. Brett Domino Trio reacted to trailers like I react to trailers! This is likely how you do as well. Let's stop perpetuating the lie that you literally have to geek out for everything.

ROOM Trailer: Brie Larson Breaks Free

It turns out the first trailer for Lenny Abrahamson's Room was all I needed to see to sell me on the film. The terrific Brie Larson plays a mother who spends years raising her son in a confined room until they can finally engineer an escape, and early reviews from the Telluride Film Festival praises her performance along with that of the young Jacob Tremblay, who plays her character's five-year-old son.

This new trailer is also really good, but since I was already on board with the concept, the director, and the cast, I probably shouldn't have watched it. I feel like it gives away more than I needed to see, and I would have preferred to experience some of those moments along with the characters for the first time watching the actual movie instead of seeing them play out on my computer screen. But if you still need convincing that this is something worthy of your time, check it out below.

Room opens in limited theaters on October 16th.

Voice Comparison Between Peter Dinklage and Nolan North In DESTINY

There was a mixed response between fans of Destiny when it was announced the voice of Ghost would be reworked. Many were fine with the voice of Peter Dinklage, but conceded perhaps more work could be done to improve the tone in which he speaks. Nolan North was brought in and re-recorded everything and now Polygon has given us the ability to hear both voices back to back.

Honestly, it's not that much better. Both voices still sound disconnected from what's happening in the game. No offense to North, as he is an accomplished voice actor, but I almost prefer Dinklage just because I'm more familiar with it. What do you think?

Michael Fassbender In Talks For Crime Thriller THE SNOWMAN

A few years ago, Martin Scorsese was lined up to direct the Norwegian crime thriller The Snowman, based on Jo Nesbo's acclaimed novel. He's since moved on to other things, but Let The Right One In and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy helmer Tomas Alfredson has stepped up as his replacement, and now it appears Alfredson has found a heck of a leading man. THR reports that Michael Fassbender is in talks to play the main character, a detective named Harry Hole.

The novel, released back in 2007, follows Hole as he attempts to solve murders committed by Norway's first serial killer, one who kills married mothers and decorates snowmen with their belongings. Sounds like a moody, atmospheric thriller that would give Fassbender the opportunity to play a classic archetype he hasn't dabbled with yet. The Snowman is the seventh book featuring Hole, so Working Title and Universal are likely thinking about franchise potential if this one performs well.

Fassbender is currently making waves with his performance as the title character in Steve Jobs on the film festival circuit, and he also has Assassin's Creed, Macbeth, and X-Men: Apocalypse coming out in the next year or so.

SUSPIRIA Horror Remake Gets a New Director and He Talks About His Vision

For years, director David Gordon Green (Prince Avalanche, Joe) was attached to direct a remake of Dario Argento's classic horror film Suspiria. That changed a couple of years ago, and now Empire reports that Luca Guadagnino has stepped in as the director. In a recent interview with the outlet, he talked about his vision for the film:

"The film by Dario Argento was a very indicative moment of growing up for me because I saw it when I was 14. I think it changed me forever. I was obsessed [with Argento] through all my adolescence. [My version] is going to be set in Berlin in 1977. It’s going to be about the mother and the concept of motherhood and about the uncompromising force of motherhood. It’s going to be about finding your inner voice – the title is very evocative on these grounds."

That’s definitely a different take on the story that I wasn’t expecting to see. The original 1977 film follows Suzy, played by Jessica Harper, who arrives in Freiburg to attend a renowned ballet academy, only to discover that it's a front for a powerful coven of witches. Guadagnino continue to talk about his version, saying:

“[It] will be very different. The movie by Dario Argento was maybe a child of its own times. It's very delicate; almost childish. I have a very strong interest in German literature and film, so I think [my] Suspiria will have to focus very strongly on that moment in history, in 1977, when Germany was divided and a new generation was claiming and asking to recognise the debt of guilt that forged the new Germany after the war against the fathers who wanted to deny the responsibility."

I really kinda wanted to bash the fact that this movie was still being remade, but the concept the director is developing is actually quite fascinating.

He’s currently in the process of casting the movie, but he won’t use Isabelle Huppert and Isabelle Fuhrman, who were previously attached to star in Green’s version. I’ve gotta say, Guadagnino definitely has my attention. Now let's see if he can actually turn his vision into a great movie.

Watch: Awesome Couple Makes Their Own DRUNK HISTORY Wedding Video

Derek Waters' Comedy Central series Drunk History started as little web series before graduating to the big time, and it's managed to pull in some impressive talent over the years, including Will Ferrell, Jack Black, Don Cheadle, John C. Reilly, Adam Scott, Will Forte, and dozens more. But more than the movie stars, it's the premise that really makes the show sing: Waters and a guest (usually a writer or comedian) get drunk, and the guest tries to recount a story about history, with actors lip syncing along with the guest's dialogue and enacting their (often hilarious) scenarios. It's educational and really funny — basically, if you're not watching it, you probably should be.

Justin Willman and Jillian Sipkins love the show, so for their wedding this past weekend, they created their own Drunk History video that tells the story of how they got together. It's a great idea, helped tremendously by solid production values (the importance of good lighting can't be overstated when it comes to making a video look professionally produced). Watch it below and tell us what you think:

TRANSFORMERS 5 Will Reportedly Feature Dual Storylines

$
0
0

Michael Bay's Transformers films have admittedly had flashes of decent moments, but for the most part, it's been cacophonous nonsense, metallic chaos, and debris...lots and lots of debris.

But apparently — more on this in a second — a new interview with one of Transformers: Age of Extinction's voice actors indicates that the upcoming Transformers 5 will feature not one, but two different storylines in an effort to set up the cinematic universe Paramount is planning for the franchise. Dark Horizons reports that Mark Ryan, who voiced Jetfire and Lockdown in T4, told the UK-based Wings and Wheels convention that one storyline will follow Mark Wahlberg's Cade Yaeger, the Dinobots, and some of the Autobots as they try to save the Earth, while the other storyline will center on Optimus Prime as he goes into space to track down the creators of the Autobots — a group called the Quintessons — and he'll also face off against a giant evil Transformer known as Unicron.

But here's the thing: I can't figure out where any of that information is coming from. Dark Horizons quotes an outlet called Patent Herald as their source, but if you actually read that (terribly written) article, it points to a source called Christian Post (another site I've never heard of) as the one who has the quotes from Ryan at the Convention. But if you follow the trail and read that piece — which is even worse than the Patent Herald article — this is the only section that could even remotely be seen as providing any legitimate information:

Mark Ryan spoke about the project during the "Wings and Wheel" convention in the United Kingdom. He explained that the film is undergoing dual directions. He said that the first will focus on Cade and Co. With that, fans predicted that "Transformers 5" will be centered around having the Autobots on earth. The franchise plans to reinvent the brand of the movie adaptations to focus more on the transformers, as opposed to the human character present.

That's where the source trail runs cold. So if Christian Post is even telling the truth about this in the first place, all Ryan apparently said is that the first storyline focuses on Cade and Co. That's it. They don't even even mention him saying anything about the second storyline. Nothing about the Dinobots, nothing about Optimus, space, Unicron, or anything else. So where did Dark Horizons get that information? Their own sources, perhaps? Then why point its readers to Patent Herald in the first place? It's amazing how many sites are talking about this who either aren't interested in the actual quotes from Ryan, or they simply don't care and are just writing about Transformers in the hopes of generating some traffic.

So assuming this dual storyline thing happens to be true (which, admittedly, it does sound like it would make sense based on the ending of Age of Extinction — but sounding true is not the same as being true!), do you want to see these two stories play out in Transformers 5? Do you care about the future of this franchise at all, or will you vote with your wallets by not paying to see these films when they come out?

Is This Nike's Functioning BACK TO THE FUTURE II Powerlace Shoe?

The photo above was tweeted out by Max Erdenberger, a former art director who worked the at advertising agency Wieden+Kennedy in Portland. Nike is a client of that ad agency. It came with the caption, "October 21, 2015." There's a chance that this is our first look at the fully functional version of Nike’s long-awaited Back to the Future II powerlace shoes.

Earlier this year it was reported that Nike was working on the shoe and they even applied for a U.S. patent complete with their plans for the “automatic lacing system.” They were hoping to have the shoe completed by the end of the year, and it looks like maybe they actually accomplished it!

When October 21st rolls around, I'm expecting an official announcement that Nike has done what a lot of Back to the Future fans have all been waiting for. You can bet your ass I'll be buying myself a pair!

Zack Snyder Addresses DC Movie Rumors and Spielberg's Thoughts on The Death of Superhero Movies

$

Last week, Steven Spielberg predicted that superhero movies would eventually go "the way of the western" and see a major drop in popularity. Zack Snyder, who has directed superhero films Watchmen, Man of Steel, and the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (and a two-part Justice League also on his schedule), spoke with Yahoo to respond to Spielberg's comments:

"He might not be wrong. I think it puts more pressure on us, the filmmakers, to not just crank out superhero movies for the sake of it. To me, the one thing I love working in the DC universe is that Superman and Batman and Wonder Woman are American mythology. It’s not about making a superhero, it’s a mythological universe that we live in. That I hope stands the test of time. They stood the test of time. That’s hopefully the sort of magic bullet. But who knows what audiences will want in the future. ... To me it’s about the drama, the humanity of it. Those are like Shakespearean characters, Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent, they have inherent drama built into their makeup."

Snyder has a point. I wonder if audiences will always want films about our main mythological icons, but if the style will change over the years, so instead of mega-budget, special effects driven blockbusters, we'll maybe get smaller, almost indie-sized films about Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman a couple of decades from now. Who knows?

The director also chimed in with some thoughts on the crazy amount of rumors that are surrounding the DC Cinematic Universe films in development right now:

"There are so many, it’s insanity. It’s funny because every now and then someone will touch on something that’s kind of true, but the next thing they say makes me realize that they took a wild guess. They’ll say something and I’ll say “Oh snap, they must have seen the script.” And then they’ll say, “And this happens!” And then I’ll go, They have no idea what they’re talking about. It’s fun for everyone to speculate and take shots and think of things and try to sell it. There’s an industry in selling your guess. [People think], “I’m going to make a fake script and look like I read the real one.” What length are you willing to go?
There’s a rumor that my son is [playing] Robin. It’s not true. Now there are all these images of him that people have made where he’s dressed like Robin. It’s fun to hear and see them."

Some interesting stuff there. So if Snyder is to be believed, his son isn't actually playing Robin, but some of the rumors that have leaked are true (or close to true). Let the guessing game begin about which ones are legit and which ones aren't in the comments below.

Functional Imperator Furiosa Prosthetic Arm Created For MAD MAX Cosplayer

The photo above features a cosplayer by the name of Laura who is a left arm transradial amputee. She also happens to be a wicked cool Imperator Furiosa cosplayer. To complete her kick-ass costume, she commissioned Michelle Sleeper of Overworld Designs to create a real, fully functional prosthetic arm just like Furiosa was sporting in Mad Max: Fury Road

They were originally going to make a Terminator Endo arm for the costume, but then things changed into the awesomeness you see here after they saw George Miller's new film. Below you will find the details of the creation process that Sleeper posted on RPF:

“We had a short conversation and I asked her permission to build her the Furiosa arm as a real actual prosthetic, much like we were going to do for the T-800 Endo Arm and she couldn’t have been more thrilled. Our plan was to finish it for Dragon Con 2015. Needless to say, I was excited too.
"During our planning for the Terminator Endo Arm project, I took a 3D scan of her using an Xbox Kinect and a software called Scannect. It allows you to easily get a rough 3D scan of someone or an object. It’s not high enough detail to look photo realistic, but it’s enough to get basic proportions. I use this myself to scale Pepakura files and do other digital sculpting. We tried getting a 3D scan of her arm and the results were alright. Really it was just enough to use for scaling and “subtracting” her arm from the Endo Arm model.
"When we shifted gears to Furiosa, I decided the first thing to do was to get a plaster cast of her arm – The prosthetic would have to actually fit her, and there was no way for me to “try on” the prop myself while building it. After an afternoon at the shop, I had one of the weirdest casts I’ve ever made, but it was exactly what we needed!”

Laura's Furiosa arm was delivered to her at Dragon Con, where I'm sure she gleefully showed it off. To read up on all the details of the process in creating this thing, click here

Tom Cruise Looks To Reunite With Doug Liman For Another Sci-Fi Film LUNA PARK

$

One of the best pieces of advice young filmmakers get is to develop a strong group of collaborators so you'll have people you can work with on new projects whenever something comes up. But that advice doesn't only apply to up-and-comers — Tom Cruise has taken it to heart as well. He's worked with Christopher McQuarrie on Valkyrie, Edge of Tomorrow, Jack Reacher, and Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation, and he's reteaming with his The Last Samurai collaborators for Jack Reacher 2. Cruise has already decided to work with his Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman again in a cartel thriller called Mena, and now Variety reports that the duo is teaming up again to develop another sci-fi film called Luna Park.

The story follows "a group of renegade employees who venture to the moon to steal an energy source," which is vague, but good enough to get me interested about it this early in the game. Cruise is looking to star, but is waiting to see how the final draft of the script comes out before fully committing. Andrew Garfield and Chris Evans were reportedly circling lead roles in this project in 2011 before it fell into development hell, but it's been a passion project of Liman's for a while and Cruise's involvement is sure to turn some heads. We'll keep you posted with more as we hear it.

Seth Rogen Debuts PREACHER Poster, Show May Premiere in 2016

$

Not long ago, Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and Breaking Bad writer/producer Sam Catlin wrapped production on the pilot of their television adaptation of Preacher, the awesome 1990s comic series by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon. The comic was controversial for multiple reasons, but it followed a preacher imbued with the literal power of God who teamed with his gun-toting girlfriend Tulip and a hard-drinking vampire named Cassidy to find God when He bails from his post in heaven. There's also a subplot about a kid named Arseface who tries to mimic Kurt Cobain by blowing his face off with a shotgun (it doesn't kill him, only horribly disfigures him), and an immortal cowboy named The Saint of Killers who is out to kill the preacher. It's totally insane, and one of the best comics I've ever read. You should all try to catch up with it before the show debuts.

Speaking of which: Rogen went on Twitter and shared the first poster for the AMC series.

An earlier tweet indicated that the show would premiere in May of 2016, but Rogen deleted that and then tweeted "may not air in May...but sometime in 2016" before deleting that one as well and posting the one above. Rogen makes it sound like the show has been officially picked up, but there's no official confirmation of that from the network as of yet. If it does get picked up, it's set for a ten episode run. I'm incredibly curious to see what these guys can do with such wild source material, especially in a culture in which outrage fuels think pieces and controversies are generated on a daily basis. I can see this show being the cause of a lot of outrage as soon as it goes on the air, so we'll see how it all plays out.

Rian Johnson's STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII Begins Filming This Month in Ireland

$

0

This morning, EW wrote an article about how J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: The Force Awakens would be heading back to Ireland for some last minute reshoots. Since most huge potential blockbuster movies incorporate reshoots into their shooting schedules, this didn't strike me as particularly newsworthy, so I didn't write about it here.

But Lucasfilm has come out stating that EW's original article was factually inaccurate: it's not The Force Awakens that's filming this month in Ireland, it's actually Rian Johnson's Star Wars: Episode VIII that will be getting underway there. That's cool news, since we aren't even sure who is going to be in that movie yet and since Benicio Del Toro (who is likely going to play the villain) recently said it starts filming in March of next year, so this is much earlier. But who will be shooting there? There's a good chance John Boyega's Finn and Daisy Ridley's Rey make it through Awakens alive, but beyond that? We're really not sure. The whole film is shrouded in secrecy so far, and I'm totally cool with that.

We do know that they're going to be filming in the same Ireland location that will be seen in Awakens, a "sharp cluster of rocks rising 715 feet out of the sea" near the ruins of an old monastery, which could be where Luke Skywalker is holed up or perhaps the lair of one of the movie's villains. I'm sure there's some spoilery information online somewhere that will tell you exactly which characters are going to be seen on that set, but I'd rather go into the movie relatively fresh and see it there for myself for the first time.

Episode VIII arrives in theaters on May 26th, 2017, a little more than five months after Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

In honor of the upcoming 24th James Bond film, Spectre, hitting theaters this November, the team at Burger Fiction put together this video about how to be England's greatest super spy. It's less of a how-to manual and more of a compilation of some memorable moments throughout the series, but it's a useful refresher for those who haven't revisited the older films in a while and just want a quick breakdown of some of Bond's characteristics.
