If you live in the Los Angeles area, I have some good news: the lineup for this year's Beyond Fest looks pretty damn stacked, and there are some awesome-sounding events that movie fans won't want to miss. Taking place at Hollywood's famous Egyptian Theater from October 1st - October 12th, the genre festival is going to showcase a mixture of horror films, premieres, and stellar conversations with icons like Bruce Campbell and Al Pacino.

Some of the notable movies that will play at the festival include a double bill of Evil Dead and Evil Dead II presented by Edgar Wright and Campbell, Brian Helgeland's upcoming Legend (starring Tom Hardy in dual roles), the new Kurt Russell western Bone Tomahawk, a 30th anniversary screening of Better Off Dead hosted by The Meltdown with Jonah Ray and Kumail Nanjiani, and a screening of Dog Day Afternoon featuring a conversation between Brett Ratner and Pacino himself. Watch: Inspiring Supercut Pays Tribute to Cinematic Heroes

0
0

A few weeks ago, CLS Video put together a supercut honoring some of the best villains in cinematic history. Now they're back with — predictably enough — a video shining a spotlight on cinematic heroes. While there are a few pre-'80s characters that make the cut, the video mostly concentrates on heroes of the past thirty years in cinema. But despite the lack of major representation from some of film's earlier days, this is still an inspiring, uplifting three-part supercut that gives the heroes their due.

Heroes come in all shapes and sizes.
Whether animated, superhuman or a real-life inspiration this three-part montage features and celebrates some of the most iconic and unforgettable ones to ever grace the big screen.
I hope you enjoy it.

Benicio Del Toro Says When STAR WARS: EPISODE 8 Begins Filming, Offers Hint About His Character

0
0

A couple of weeks ago, Benicio Del Toro essentially confirmed that he would be starring in Rian Johnson's upcoming Star Wars: Episode VIII. He couldn't give any details, of course, but he said, "It looks like it's gonna happen."

Now, in a new Spanish interview sent to StarWars7News, he not only confirms that he'll be in it and reveals when filming begins (this coming March), he also offers a tiny bit of info about what kind of character he'll be playing:

Interviewer: And are you going to shoot something after that?
Benicio Del Toro: No, just… *pause* Star Wars is coming up, we will see how that turns out. I think we start shooting in March.
Interviewer: And what’s your role in this new Star Wars chapter?
Benicio: Ehhh…. the thing is…. They don’t let me talk too much about it, I’m like the villain.
Interviewer: Oh wow!
Benicio: But…. we’ll see…*laughs*

The news comes with a little note that points out that Del Toro's specific words were "es como el villano," which literally translates to "he's like the villain." By putting the word "like" in there (and not in a Valley Girl kind of way), Del Toro leaves his statement open to some interpretation. Will he be playing a guy who has evil tendencies, like a bounty hunter or something, but who ultimately sides with the good guys? Or is he the second in command villain, not the main baddie? That seems likely to me — I'm guessing whoever the main villain is pulling the strings in The Force Awakens (Andy Serkis, perhaps?) won't be dispatched by the end of that movie, and will probably stick around for Episode 8 and maybe even 9 as well. Could Del Toro's character be working for him?

We'll keep you posted as we hear more.

Battlecade is an Awesome Portable Face-to-Face 2-Player Arcade Console

You've got to check out this insanely cool retro looking 2-player face-to-face arcade console created by Swedish designer Love Hultén. It's called Battlecade, and it's inspired by classic board games such as Battleship and Connect Four. I would seriously love to have one of these Battlecades! It's one of those things that will help make the world a better place. Here's some additional information for it:

Conceptual arcade console for two players, inspired by classic board games like Battleship. Instead of having a side by side set up, the two opponents sit face to face, each looking at their own 12″ LCD screen and controllers, without being able to see the other person’s moves. The Battlecade is handmade from American walnut and features a built-in storage for accessories like power supply and detachable joysticks. When not in use, the console in three sections folds into a convenient carrier.

You can see a video below of Battlecade in action, as well as some additional photos.

Simone Missick to Play Misty Knight in Marvel's LUKE CAGE

Hot on the heels of news that Rosario Dawson will be reprising her role of Claire Temple in Marvel and Netflix's Luke Cage and that Sons of Anarchy star Theo Rossi had also joined the cast, Deadline has news of one more new addition to the squad. Actress Simone Missick (with whom I'm completely unfamiliar) has snagged the young female lead role listed as Missy, but which Deadline says is actually the character of Misty Knight.

A former cop who lost her arm in the line of duty, Misty gets a cyborg arm from none other than Tony Stark. In the comics, she becomes a superhero/detective and works with Luke Cage and Iron Fist, and she eventually has a romantic relationship with Iron Fist (that supposed show, by the way, is still a mystery to Marvel TV, and I wouldn't be surprised to hear them abandon it altogether since BMD says they still haven't cracked the story for it).

This sounds like it could be a solid role for Missick, but we're still at least a year away from seeing how she handles the character when Luke Cage finally comes to Netflix.

Brighten Your Day With An AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON Blooper Reel

When the fate of the world is at stake, there's no time for mistakes: one slip could mean the difference between life and death. Thankfully, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, and the rest of The Avengers aren't actually responsible for saving our lives, because if this brief blooper reel for Avengers: Age of Ultron is any indication, we'd be in trouble.

Come for Samuel L. Jackson saying "motherf*cker," and stick around for Hawkeye murdering Quicksilver. This is just a small sample of the full blooper reel, which will be available on the film's home video release.

LUKE CAGE Adds HOUSE OF CARDS and HUNGER GAMES Actor

Casting is in full swing up for Marvel and Netflix's Luke Cage. There have been a number of announcements of additions to the cast over the past few days, including Rosario Dawson, Theo Rossi, and Simone Missick, and now Marvel itself is getting in on the mix by releasing the name of yet another new cast member: House of Cards and The Hunger Games star Mahershala Ali.

He'll play Cornell "Cottonmouth" Stokes, "a Harlem night club owner [who] will become an unexpected foe in Luke’s life when Stokes’ criminal activities threaten Luke’s world." I haven't read any Luke Cage (or Power Man) comics, so I'm going into this series cold, but Ali is a solid actor who's a great presence in House of Cards, and he's staying in the Netflix family with this one.

“Mahershala is an actor of extraordinary range and gravitas. As Cottonmouth he will really let loose,” said Executive Producer/Head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb. “Luke Cage won’t know what hit him.”
It was previously announced that Mike Colter (“Marvel’s Jessica Jones,” "The Good Wife”) will play the charismatic lead character, Luke Cage, in the series. Cheo Hodari Coker (“SouthLAnd,” “Ray Donovan”) will write the series’ first two episodes in addition to serving as showrunner and Executive Producer.

Luke Cage is set to debut sometime in 2016.

MEGA MAN Is Finally Getting a Feature Film Adaptation

The classic Mega Man video game franchise is finally going to get a feature film adaptation. This has been a long time coming, and I'm surprised it took so long for it to happen. 20th Century Fox is teaming up with Chernin Entertainment, and according to The Tracking Board, they've already started developing it.

This is basically the same development team that brought us the recent incarnation of Planet of the Apes films. David Ready and Michael Finfer are overseeing the project for the Chernin, and Peter Chernin is producing. Mike Ireland and Ryan Horrigan are overseeing for Fox.

The fact that this is the same team that brought us Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes gives me hope that fans will get a solid adaptation of this iconic video game character.

There's no word on if it will be CG animated or live-action, but I assume it will be a mixture of both. A couple of months ago it was reported that there was a new animated series in development for 2017, and I wonder if that will be a timed release with this movie. There was also a dark and gritty fan-made film that was released last year that you can check out here

Mega Man was first launched in 1987 by Capcom, and the backstory followed Dr. Light and the blue android he built to be his lab assistant. They were betrayed by the villainous Dr. Wily, who stole Dr. Light’s work and made an evil robot to take over the world. To combat this robot, Dr. Light transformed his lab assistant into a battle droid and armed him with a cannon. He named him Mega Man.

I imagine the movie will give us this origin story and take us to the point where Mega Man defeats Dr. Wily. This film has serious potential to be amazing, and I hope that they actually pull off something that fans will be excited about it.

Diggle's New Look for ARROW Season 4 Revealed and He's Got Magneto's Helmet

diggles-new-look-revealed-for-arrow-season-4-and-he-looks-like-magneto

The CW has released a new banner promoting season four of Arrow, and it offers us our first look at Diggle's new costume. The character is played by David Ramsey, and as you can see, he definitely has a Magneto kind of vibe to him. Mostly because of the helmet.

Executive producer Marc Guggenheim talked to EW about the new costume:

“We try to be very consistent with our characterization. I don’t think Diggle looks at it as a costume per se. Oliver, in the last season, gave him advice in terms of concealing his identity, and so Diggle approaches it from a very practical standpoint. He followed Oliver’s advice and he’s got a means of concealing his identity, but I think Diggle would probably react to anyone calling it a costume.”

It's a cool look, it's just very reminiscent of the villainous Marvel character. It also has some ancient spartan inspiration. What do you think of the character's new look?

After defeating his most formidable foe to date and riding off into the sunset with longtime flame Felicity Smoak, Oliver Queen (a.k.a. The Arrow) left Starling City with the hopes of beginning a new life. But will Oliver ever truly be able to leave behind his past as the Arrow, and, if so, what becomes of the team he has worked so hard to assemble? Will Diggle, Thea, and Laurel be left to continue Oliver’s crusade without him? And with Malcolm Merlyn having ascended to the top of the League of Assassins as the new Ra’s al Ghul, is anyone really safe?

Arrow is set to premiere on Wednesday, October 7th at 8:00 pm.

Hear Kylo Ren and Captain Phasma Speak for the First Time

0

Thanks to the new toys for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, we finally get to hear what villain Kylo Ren sounds like in the film. The talking Kylo Ren figure says ten things, and they are actually pretty revealing. It's pretty easy to guess what he is talking about and to whom he is speaking to in many of the things he says. One of the things he says is, “I’ve been waiting for this day for a long time.” I'd like to imagine this is the moment in the film when he comes face to face with Luke Skywalker. That's just me speculating, though. This is pretty cool and exciting stuff! The voice used for the toy is in fact Adam Driver's voice. I also included a video of John Boyega's Finn spouting off a few lines of his own, as well as Gwendoline Christie's Captain Phasma. Thanks to IGN and David Popineau for the videos.

Here is a list of things that he says:

  • “You know what I’ve come for.”
  • I feel it too.
  • “Together we will destroy the Resistance and the last Jedi.”
  • “Don’t fight it.”
  • “You know you can’t, I am immune to the light.”
  • “We will send it away”
  • “I’ve been waiting for this day for a long time.”
  • “Is it true, you’re just a scavenger.”
  • “Don’t be afraid, I feel it too.”
  • “That weapon is mine.”
  • "We go back to Jakku, we die!"
  • "I never should have rescued you!"
  • "My name's Finn and I'm in Charge Now."
  • "Stay low and Put up the shields!"
  • "We need cover quick!"
  • "FN2187, I don't know what, to do!"
  • "Listen, I've had a pretty messed up day."
  • “Move to your ships, now.”
  • “On my command…”
  • “Fire FN2187.”
  • “Submit your blaster for inspection.”

Happy Force Friday! This has been a very eventful week for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and it all led to today. A flood of toys and action figures are now avialable for you to buy! There's a lot of cool stuff for collectors to spend their cold, hard cash on. We now have some new promo posters that have been given out with Star Wars: The Force Awakens product purchases at various stores. I've also included some new character art that comes from the Topps Star Wars Trading Card app, which is both addicting and frustrating because I never get any cool cards! They feature Finn, Rey, Chewie, BB-8, Poe Dameron, Kylo Ren, Captain Phasma, and a First Order Stormtrooper.

Joaquin Phoenix Explains Why He Passed on DOCTOR STRANGE and Other Big Films

0
0

Over the past few years, Joaquin Phoenix has been up for some pretty big movie roles. He was up for the role of Stephen Strange in Marvel's Doctor Strange, as well as the role of Lex Luther in Batman v Superman. Neither of those roles ended up working out for him. If you remember, he was actually in final discussions for Doctor Strange before he pulled out. During an interview with Time Out London, the actor talks about why he's not interested in these kinds of roles, saying:

“When I was younger I was probably a bit of a snob about [taking on blockbuster roles]. But they’ve gotten better. I’ve flirted with several of those films, having meetings and getting close, but ultimately it never felt like they’d really be fulfilling. There were too many requirements that went against my instincts for character. I’ve been spoiled. I’ve never had to make those compromises. I’ve not met a director yet with one of those films where we go through the script, they say: ‘You know what, fuck this set-piece, let’s focus on the character!’ I understand, but it’s best I don’t do it.”

Phoenix is a great actor, and he would have made a great Doctor Strange, but judging by the films that he's made in the past, these kinds of movies just really don't seem to fit his personality. Instead, he opted to make another little horror thriller with M. Night Shyamalan. It's not to say he doesn't enjoy watching these movies, because he does! He goes on to say:

“I enjoy watching those movies. Did you see the rebooted ‘Star Trek’? That kid Chris Pine who plays Kirk is fucking genius. I just don’t know if I want to have the experience of being in them. I’ve read some of those scripts and 75 percent is a description of some asteroid going through space.”

Who knows? Maybe one day Phoenix will find a role in one of these upcoming big blockbuster films that he just can't say no to. I'd personally love to see him take on a role in the Star Wars universe. I think he'd fit in perfectly as a hero or a villain.

The Identity of Marvel's THE TOTALLY AWESOME HULK Revealed

0

the-identity-of-marvels-the-totally-awesome-hulk-revealed

Marvel Comics has been teasing the "All-New, All-Different Hulk" that will be introduced in the new The Totally Awesome Hulk comic for months now. The identity of the Hulk has now been revealed, and it looks like fan speculation that it was kid genius Amadeus Cho was spot on, because that's who it is! This is the first Korean-American lead character in a Marvel comic that is also written and drawn by a Korean-American creative team, which consists of Greg Pak and Frank Cho.

Marvel’s editor-in-chief Axel Alonso talks about the new Hulk comic in an interview with EW:

"For Banner, the weight was like a boulder. For Cho, it’s like a feather. And I think that’s the distinction here. He loves being the Hulk: that’s why he’s called the “Totally Awesome Hulk.” But I also want to say that he will be the only Hulk in the Marvel Universe. He will be the Hulk, the green Hulk, that will be him. Just like there’s one Thor in the Marvel Universe and she’s a she, there is one Hulk and it is Amadeus Cho. But I also want to say that there is a story to be told for Banner. Banner’s story is not over. And I don’t want people saying, 'Oh, these guys hate Banner, and they don’t like him and they’re sick of him.' No — we love Banner. And in fact, that was one of the things that Greg and Mark and I discussed, how fascinating Banner’s life will become now that he no longer has this weight on his shoulders. What is his story? It’s far from finished. People shouldn’t think that we’re jettisoning Banner — he has a place in the Marvel Universe, and I think it’s going to become more fascinating what that place is in the coming months."

Pak talks about what we can expect from the new comic series:

"The story is working on three levels: we’ve got the big crazy action level — the big monster hunt — that’s what our big story arc is. Which is also up Frank Cho’s alley, because if you know Frank Cho, you know he draws monsters like nobody’s business, and he’s going nuts with this. So, we’ve got the monster hunt, we’ve got the mystery of what happened to Banner and what’s going on with Banner, and then there’s an emotional story, of course. My favorite kinds of stories are the ones that have these big crazy genre hijinks and then a real honest, meaty, emotional story where we’re watching a character grapple with some real things. And we’re going to see if Amadeus’ dream of being the greatest Hulk ever and his total confidence of that is really warranted. And we’ve got some great supporting characters that are going to be challenging him in some interesting ways."

Alonso adds:

"The link to what happened to Banner, of course, is how did Amadeus get the power? The first arc is going to tell two stories: one is going to take place in present time, which is going to be Amadeus being totally awesome as the Hulk, and kicking ass and getting a threat that is scaled to his power. And I’ll also tease that there are seeds in this story of something larger, that will be relevant to the entire Marvel Universe sometime toward the end of the year. So there are seeds there for something much more interesting. The other story told in flashbacks will tell you how he inherited to power and what happened to Banner."

You can read the rest of the lengthy interview here to get more information. For those of you who are big Hulk fans, what do you think of Amadeus Cho as the new Hulk?

Movie Poster for LEATHERFACE, Which Offers us a Texas Chainsaw Origin

movie-poster-for-the-leatherface-which-offers-us-a-texas-chainsaw-origin

Lionsgate has released the first poster for their up coming Texas Chainsaw Massacre origin film, Leatherface. The movie stars Stephen Dorff (Blade), Vanessa Grasse (Roboshark), Sam Strike (EastEnders), and Lili Taylor (The Conjuring).

I seriously have no idea what to expect from this. I'd like to be excited for it because i'm such a big fan of the original films, but these horror movie remakes and reboots have been shit. Maybe the French filmmaking duo of Julian Maury and Alexandre Bustillo (Inside, Livid) will pull off something horror fans can embrace. We'll just have to wait and see. In the meantime, here's the synopsis:

A prequel to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre which will explore the origins of the horror icon in the 1970s, the story will begin with the Leatherface character in his teenage years. He resides in a mental institution until he joins a pack of fellow patients who all break out and go on the run from the authorities. The film will mark the eighth overall entry in the franchise, which currently includes, in addition to Tobe Hooper’s original, three sequels, a remake, a prequel to the remake and a modern-day “direct sequel.”

Leatherface is expected to be released in the U.S. sometime in 2016.

Details on The Guavian Enforcer Characters From STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

0

Thanks to Force Friday and all of the Star Wars toys being unleashed, we have a new look at a group of characters that are being introduced to the Star Wars universe. They are called the Guavian Enforcers, and we actually got a glimpse of them in the behind-the-scenes sizzle reel that was released at Comic-Con this summer. That's a screenshot of them above.

Below you can find a couple of photos from Chris Cantada's Instagram page (via: /Film). They give us a more detailed look at what these characters look like, and they also offer us some additional information. The description on the product box reads as follows:

"The security soldiers of the Guavian Gang wear high impact armor that makes them stand out from other deadly criminals."

This is the second gang we know of in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The first gang we learned about was the Kanjiklub gang ,which included a character named Tasu Leech. I'm curious to find out how these gangs came about.

Below the Instagram embeds, you will find the Comic-Con sizzle reel, which is set to play at the part where you see the Guavian Enforcer gang in action.

Now this dude was a real surprise for me. We haven't seen anything about him yet... Well I haven't. But with his cool looking suit and helmet, couldn't resist picking this up. Looks like Deadpool mixed with the villain from Hellboy! And he was the only one left among the sea of Finns and Reys. That's pretty much a good sign to get it. Haha! Can't wait to see what this guy looks like on screen! #GuavianEnforcer #starwars #ForceFridayPH #forcefriday #theforceawakens

Idris Elba Rules an Army in New Trailer For BEASTS OF NO NATION

I'm guessing director Cary Fukunaga is probably glad he didn't return for the critically-panned second season of True Detective. After finishing work on the exceptional first season (he directed every episode), he filmed Beasts of No Nation, a new movie for Netflix that seems likely to put the streaming service in contention for some Academy Awards for the first time.

Idris Elba stars as an African warlord who lords over an army of child fighters, and the film is making the festival rounds before debuting in limited theaters and on Netflix on October 16th. Check out the trailer and a new poster below:

When civil war tears his family apart, a young West African boy is forced to join a unit of mercenary fighters and transform into a child soldier.

Kevin Feige Contemplated Leaving Marvel Studios Before Recent Restructuring

What would Marvel Studios look like without Kevin Feige as its president? We'll find out someday when he ultimately decides to move on, but we almost entered that situation way sooner than fans would have liked. According to THR, Feige "contemplated leaving" the studio partly over budget disagreements regarding Captain America: Civil War, in which Marvel Entertainment CEO Ike Perlmutter and the creative committee both wanted Feige to "scale it down."

You'd think Feige would have earned some more trust from those around him by now. The entire Marvel Cinematic Universe is his brainchild, and he's led the studio to become an industry powerhouse and reshaped the way studios are thinking about storytelling in films. Feige wasn't happy with the suggestions, so Disney CEO Bob Iger changed things to where Feige will no longer report to Perlmutter at all, and also essentially ended the creative committee's influence over the film side of the equation. (It will apparently stay in existence for Marvel TV and other properties still overseen by Perlmutter.)

It's kind of crazy to think that the studio nearly lost its most important person over something like budget issues, especially for a movie like Captain America: Civil War, which is almost certainly going to do better numbers than Ant-Man and maybe even top Avengers: Age of Ultron (which the company considers a failure, despite grossing over a billion dollars).

BATMAN V SUPERMAN Batmobile Can Be Seen on The WB Studio Tour For The Rest of 2015

Starting today, the Batmobile from Zack Snyder's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has been added to the roster of picture cars used in the Batman film franchise that are on display on the Warner Bros. Studio Tour in Burbank, California. The studio released a video of the new vehicle heading onto the lot, and it should definitely be a cool addition for guests to check out. It'll be on display there for the rest of the year, and I'm guessing in January they'll have to use it for filming again since Justice League is coming up pretty quickly.

I went on the WB studio tour last year, and you can see some of my photos from their Batman exhibit right here
