ASSASSIN'S CREED Movie Will Impact Shared Universe of Games, Comics, and Books

$

0

Last week, we finally got to see our first look at Michael Fassbender suited up in costume for his long-brewing film version of Assassin's Creed. We learned that he's playing an original character named Callum Lynch, and that the film will tell a new story that doesn't directly adapt a specific game in the popular franchise thus far. But that doesn't mean that gamers won't feel the ripple effects of the film's plotline moving forward.

BleedingCool noticed that Aymar Azaïzia, the head of Assassin's Creed content at Ubisoft, revealed that the events of the film "have consequences" in the larger shared universe of the property:

It sounds like they're taking a page from Lucasfilm's playbook and making sure that all of the canonical content lines up, just like how all of the new Star Wars content takes place in the same universe. It's something fans will likely appreciate in the long run, and I think it's a smarter decision than trying to directly adapt a single game to the big screen. By introducing new content on film, they can then incorporate that into the larger mythology of the whole franchise, strengthening its storytelling overall.

Filming began today, and the movie is set to be released on December 21st, 2016.

Rumored Details About Spider-Man's Web Shooters in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR

$

0

Captain America: Civil War could easily outgross Avengers: Age of Ultron to become the highest-grossing film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe next year, and with Anthony and Joe Russo at the helm — and theoretically not quite as much franchise-building on the docket as Joss Whedon was saddled with in Ultron — the film could turn out to be pretty fantastic.

There are a ton of reasons people are excited about it, but arguably one of the biggest is the fact that Tom Holland's new Spider-Man will be making his first appearance in the MCU in the film, and everyone's curious to see how he does and what decisions Sony and Marvel make in bringing the character to life for the third time in the past fifteen years. Here's where things are going to get a little spoilery, so turn back now if you somehow came this far by accident and want to go in cold.

We've heard that Peter Parker will wear two different suits in the movie: one that's a homemade version, and another that Tony Stark gives to him later in the film. Latino-Review points out that in the comics, Stark gives Parker a suit that's outfitted with Stark Industries technology, and some were wondering if that suit might make an appearance in the movie. According to their sources, though, the "Iron Spider will not be part of “Civil War” but instead Stark will be the one responsible for creating Spidey’s web shooters."

Obviously we'll need the full context to judge whether or not this development works in the movie, but my gut reaction is that I'm hoping this rumor isn't true. The fact that Spider-Man invented his own web shooters was a huge part of why I loved the character growing up, and to have Tony Stark just swoop in and hand them to him seems like it's cheating the character out of one of his coolest achievements. Is he going to just have Tony ship him new web fluid whenever it runs out? One of the biggest sources of drama in the comics was when Parker would run out of web fluid, forcing him to come up with inventive ways to get the best of his enemies in tight situations. It also gave him a reason to work at The Daily Bugle (he needed money to fund his web shooters), and working at the Bugle provided a whole different set of dramatic opportunities for the character. If you take all of that away, what are you left with? Not much.

Again, there may be a way for all of this to work out fine in the movie. But I still don't think any Spider-Man movie has properly given the web shooters the prominence they deserve, so it's a bit of a touchy subject since we've seen five movies thus far and they haven't gotten it right yet. Plus, Kevin Feige has said that Spidey already exists in the MCU and we just haven't seen him yet, so if that's the case and he's been swinging around New York City already, I wonder if maybe Stark just gives Parker a sleeker, more high-tech version of web shooters. Something to think about.

What do you all think? Does it matter to you if Stark gives Parker his web shooters? Or would you rather see Peter invent them himself?

CANDYMAN’s Tony Todd Will Voice the Villain Zoom in THE FLASH Season 2

The CW has cast Candyman star Tony Todd to voice the villainous role of Zoom in The Flash. Zoom will come into play in the second episode of season two, “Flash of Two Worlds.” He’s going to be quite a maniac to the hero, and it will be interesting to see how the story arc of these two characters plays out.

Executive producer Andrew Kreisberg had this to say about the casting in a statement:

“Last year, with the Reverse-Flash, we just modulated Tom Cavanagh’s voice, and this year we wanted to do something a little bit different. Part of the mystery of the season is who or what is underneath the Zoom outfit, and so we wanted to do something like James Earl Jones as Darth Vader — this iconic voice coming out of this mask. Last year, we thought of the Reverse-Flash as a speed warrior; this year, Zoom is like a speed demon, and no one does demon-voice better than Tony Todd.”

Todd has a spectacular voice that is going to work great for Zoom. Kreisberg goes on to compare Zoom’s suit to that of Venom in Spider-Man, saying:

“The Zoom outfit is much more organic than the Reverse-Flash suit. In a way, it’s hard to tell if it is a suit or alive… There’s no skin showing, for all you know there’s a robot underneath, or dark energy.”

He goes on to talk about what drives the villainous character in the upcoming season:

“For us, the best villains are the ones who don’t have megalomaniacal ‘I want to rule the world’ motivations. Last year, the Reverse-Flash had a very simple goal which was ‘I just want to go home, and if people need to die or cities need to get wasted for me to get that, so be it.’ And Zoom has a very similar, personal goal this season… simple and easy to understand, and very primal. And just as with Wells last year, Zoom doesn’t care who gets hurt or what gets destroyed in the service of him getting his goal.”

As for Zoom’s actual identity, the creators of the series seem to have put a new spin on it. According to the report, comic book fans will be happy because they’ve “come up with a clever way to spin the tale, but that also makes it exciting for the people who aren’t as familiar with the comics and are just enjoying the show on its own terms.”

It seems like this next season is going to turn out to be as awesome as we all hoped it would. The Flash returns Tuesday, October 6th at 8 pm on The CW.

Microsoft and 343 Studios have released the opening cinematic sequence for Halo 5: Guardians, and it's spectacular! The opening sequence doesn't feature Master Chief at all, but that's ok! You really don't miss him. The scene revolves around Spartan Locke and his Fireteam Osiris colleagues as they jump into action in the middle of an insane battle currently underway. It's pretty damn exciting! It was also fun to see Nathan Fillion. This is the note that came along with the video:

Halo 5 Opening Cinematic. Watch Spartan Locke and the rest of Fireteam Osiris in the worldwide unveiling of the opening cinematic to Halo 5: Guardians. In the cinematic, the group receives UNSC orders to recover a high value target and deploy to take on Covenant and Promethean forces in a fierce action sequence – the start to the most ambitious, robust and epic Halo campaign experience yet.

I'm been a fan of the Halo franchise from the beginning, and I can't wait to jump into action in Halo 5: Guardians. It will be released on Xbox One on October 27th, 2015.

Launching this fall exclusively on Xbox One, Halo 5: Guardians continues the story of the Master Chief, and introduces a brand new central character to the Halo universe – Spartan Locke (as seen in the liveaction series “Halo: Nightfall”). Peace is shattered when colony worlds are unexpectedly attacked. And when humanity’s greatest hero goes missing, Spartan Locke is tasked with hunting the Master Chief and solving a mystery that threatens the entire galaxy.
Play as the Master Chief and Spartan Locke as the hunt plays out across three new worlds. Choose how to achieve objectives while playing solo with AI teammates or with friends in a 4-player cooperative experience. Also featuring new, massive-scale multiplayer mode that supports 24-player battles with both friendly and enemy AI dropping in. It’s nonstop action when you confront Spartans, Covenant, and Forerunners while trying to complete a variety of objectives.

Pennsylvania Brewery Brews Limited Batch of GHOSTBUSTERS Ecto Cooler Beer

When I was growing up, I freakin’ loved the Ecto Cooler Hi-C boxed beverage. It was released in the 1980s as a tie-in with the cartoon The Real Ghostbusters. I was always getting my parents to buy that sugary shit for me!

Well, a brewery located in Ardmore, Pennsylvania, is taking the nostalgia of that beverage and brewing up a limited batch of Ecto Cooler beer. It came from the Tired Hands Brewing Company, they call the beer Necto Cooler, and it’s based on the classic orange-flavored, green-colored drink.

According to ihorror, “In order to achieve the retro-inspired flavor, Tired Hands used grilled nectarines to make the sour wheat beer, and they promoted the release with a painting of mascot Slimer on one of the brewery’s windows. Not surprisingly, the limited brew didn’t last long, completely selling out in a matter of days.”

There are no plans to ever bring Necto Cooler back, which is a shame for all of you who are now wishing that you could try it. But you never know, the brewery’s manager says, “Never say never.”

Drove down to Tired Hands by myself to just have one beer but the promise of "NectoCooler" was too good to miss out on.

All Hail the Trailer for Michael Fassbender's MACBETH

The Weinstein Company has released a U.S. trailer for Michael Fassbender's big-screen adaptation of William Shakespeare's Macbeth. Fassbender stars as the title character and Marion Cotillard plays his power-crazed wife. The trailer features a lot of epic-looking footage from the film, a lot of which features Macbeth in the midst of battle. There were many bloody misdeeds involved in Macbeth's pursuit of the crown, and if you know the story, then you know you're in for an intense film. It looks like a great adaptation!

Macbeth is the story of a fearless warrior and inspiring leader brought low by ambition and desire. A thrilling interpretation of the dramatic realities of the times and a reimagining of what wartime must have been like for one of Shakespeare’s most famous and compelling characters, a story of all-consuming passion and ambition set in war torn 11th Century Scotland.

The movie was directed by Justin Kurzel and will be released in theaters on October 2nd in the U.K. and December 4th in the U.S.

The Joker Gets a Giant Robot Makeover in New DETECTIVE COMICS Issue

The new Detective Comics has brought some very interesting changes to the Batman universe. The main change is that Batman is no longer Bruce Wayne. In this story arc, Batman is Jim Gordon, and he goes around fighting crime in a Mech suit that he pilots.

It seems like Batman’s rogues gallery don’t stand a chance with Gordon in the suit. But it looks like the Joker is going to give him a run for his money, as always. This comic sees the rise of The Joker’s daughter after his death at the hands of Bruce Wayne at the conclusion of Batman: Endgame.

So how does she go up against Gordon’s mech Batman? Well, she builds a robot mech of her own to take him down. There's no better way to fight a robot than with another robot. The current Detective Comics’ arc comes from Brian Buccellato and Fernando Blanco, and thanks to CBR, you can get a little tease of what the story entails in Detective Comics #44 comic panels below.

Robo-Joker battling Robo-Batman is an interesting way to go. Who knows, maybe the whole DC Universe will be filled with mech robots one day? It’s been really interesting to see all of these changes not only in the DC Universe but in the Marvel Universe as well.

What do you think about the latest changes with Batman?

BLOOD BOWL 2 Game Footage Shows Us Dwarves vs. Skaven

If you're a console owner looking to play some turn based strategy or perhaps mythical Football, I have a treat for you! Blood Bowl 2 has been confirmed for both Xbox One and PS4 and comes out September 22nd. The gameplay will show you this game isn't traditional American football necessarily. If anything it's a little more like Rugby with the lack of plays implemented into the game. Oh, yeah, and there's killing other players and all that junk.

In the clip we see Dwarves and the rat race Skaven are involved, but elves, orcs and Nords are said to be included as well! Each team has a different play style and attributes which cater to a different play style. PC players who played the original were very high on it, so I'm pumped. I may not be purchasing this one, but I'll for sure give it a rent to see if it can't change my mind.

"Batmetal" is the animation you deserve and need in your life right now. While the animation is original, the song is from cartoon metal band Dethklok and titled "Murmaider." I don't have to tell you about Metalacalypse, you watch Adult Swim. While the Disney and Nicktoon cameos were a bit much, I loved the DC characters and references throughout! Great video!

GOTHAM Season 2 Clip - Barbara Gordon and Jerome Meet in Arkham Asylum

The first clip from season two of Gotham has been released. It’s called “Ginger and Gorgeous,” and it features Jerome, who will most likely be the Joker, introducing himself to Barbara Gordon while they are serving time together in Arkham Asylum.

I have no idea where they are going to take the whole Barbara Gordon storyline, but a part of me thinks that maybe she could end up being Harley Quinn somewhere down the line. I know that's not how the storyline in the comics plays out, but this series seems to be changing things up a big so I think it's possible.

We’ll get a better idea of what is going to happen as we watch the events of the second season unfold. I’m curious to see if this relationship with Jerome goes anywhere, and if it leads to complete insanity. The series is set to premiere on September 21st.

We've got a short Star Wars fan film for you to check out today that revolves around Boba Fett. The short is called Star Wars: The New Republic Anthology, and it's actually more of a tease than it is a short film. It was directed by Eric Demeusy, and I wish it were longer! The production quality is pretty great, would have loved to see more, though. It ends right at the point where it's about to get really good. Here's the description that came along with the short:

After being trapped for 30 years in the Great Pit of Carkoon, infamous bounty hunter Boba Fett makes a death defying escape and finds himself fighting alongside the Rebellion to establish a New Republic.

Hopefully, we get to see the story continue! Thanks to the director for sending this in to us.

Andrew Garfield Explains How He Failed As Spider-Man

$

I was actually a big fan of what Andrew Garfield brought to the role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man in Marc Webb's Amazing Spider-Man films, but the actor feels like he could have done more. Garfield has been making the press rounds recently and he's been talking a lot about what it was like to play the web-slinger, and it doesn't sound like it wasn't a very fun time for him.

As you know, Garfield is a huge fan of Spider-Man, and he was excited as hell to play him on the big screen. It was a dream come true, but that dream seemed to crash and burn. In an interview with Zaki’s Corner, the actor was asked what he learned from being Spider-Man, and this was his response:

"Well, nothing, because I was never Spider-Man. Because Spider-Man’s a fictional character. He’s not real. [laughs] You know what’s funny, to give you the vulnerable answer, I thought I was going to be Spider-Man, you know? I went into it going...ego shit came in. It’s like, “Okay, here it is. I’m f***ing Spider-Man. I f***ing made it.” All that shit. [laughs] I didn’t actually make it. I was never Spider-Man.
"I was the actor that I am. The person that I am. Struggling with trying to match up with something that I’d elevated so high in my mind. Elevated beyond what I could attain, what I could achieve. The great thing is, that’s what Peter Parker was doing as well. Peter Parker created this symbol that he couldn’t live up to. It was never enough. He never felt enough, and I never felt enough. I never felt like I was able to do enough. And I couldn’t rescue those films...even though I didn’t sleep. [laughs]
"And I wanted to...not to say that I needed to rescue those films, but I couldn’t make them as deep and soulful and...life-giving as I could ever dream. And I’m never gonna be able to do that, with any film. It was especially difficult in that situation because...well, just because. And it was especially important because that character has always meant so much to me, and you saw that if you saw the Comic Con thing, which, thank you for reminding me about that."

The guy obviously had a vision for those movies, but it sounds like he was in a situation where he couldn't really do anything. It's crazy he actually lost sleep over it. In a separate interview with The Playlist, Garfield spoke about the pressures of being involved with such a big project.

"The pressure to get it right, to please everyone… it's not going to happen...You end up pleasing no one, or everyone just a little bit. Like, ‘Eh, that was good.’ [The films are] mass-marketed, like ‘We want 50-year-old white men to love it, gay teenagers to love it, bigot homophobes in Middle America to love it, 11-year-old girls to love it.’ That's canning Coke."

Damn! Well, you can't say that Garfield never really told us how he really feels. He went on to share how he felt after he was dropped from the franchise, saying:

"So that aspect of it was a bummer. Especially for the group of us trying to infuse it with soul, trying to make it unique, something that was worth the price of entry. It was about authenticity, flavor, and truth, but at the same time, I understand people want to make a lot of money, and they're going to spend a lot of money so the playpen can be as big as it was. I can't live that way; it sounds like a prison, to be honest, living within those expectations."

His bad experience with Spider-Man isn't going to stop him from jumping on board another big franchise, though. He says that he's up for the challenge and that he's "not going to shy away from something that a lot of people are going to see. Fuck it, bring it on, life's short."

I think Garfield is a great young actor who has a long career ahead of him. It sucks that his Spider-Man films went down the road they did and that it was hard for him. At least he did the best he could under the circumstances.

Trailer: Eddie Redmayne Becomes THE DANISH GIRL

Following his Oscar-winning turn as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything, actor Eddie Redmayne has his eye on another statue with his newest movie, The Danish Girl. It's directed by The King's Speech and Les Miserables helmer Tom Hooper, and I've included the synopsis below.

The remarkable love story inspired by the lives of Lili Elbe and Gerda Wegener (portrayed by Academy Award winner Eddie Redmayne ["The Theory of Everything"] and Alicia Vikander ["Ex Machina"]), directed by Academy Award winner Tom Hooper ("The King's Speech," "Les Misérables"). Lili and Gerda's marriage and work evolve as they navigate Lili's groundbreaking journey as a transgender pioneer.

With Caitlin Jenner's Vanity Fair cover making huge waves earlier this year and igniting a conversation about transgendered people in America, this seems like one of those turning points when the culture at large is making strides toward progress and acceptance. I certainly don't want to minimize the importance of seeing transgendered people on screen, but Redmayne seems to be really embracing the idea of giving huge dramatic performances right now that just so happen to align perfectly with traditional Oscar bait. My issue right now is with him instead of with this movie, so I'll be glad to see him take a breather from these kinds of showy roles with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them next year.

The Danish Girl opens in limited release on November 27th, and expands to additional cities in December. Watch the trailer and let us know what you think:

Marvel's Kevin Feige Will Directly Report to Disney Now, and This is a Good Thing!

marvels-kevin-feige-will-directly-report-to-disney-now-and-this-is-a-good-thing

Since Marvel Studios first started making movies, President Kevin Feige had to report to Marvel Entertainment CEO Isaac "Ike" Perlmutter. This is something that he had to do even after Disney bought Marvel. But that has all changed now. According to THR, Feige will now only have to report to Disney studio chief Alan Horn, which is a good thing for Feige, Marvel, and the movies they make.

The report mirrors things that I've personally heard from people who have worked for Marvel and know what it's like working for Perlmutter. According to these sources, Feige has gone through "several years of frustration" while working with Perlmutter. A Disney spokesperson told the site:

"Marvel Studios is taking the next logical step in its integration with The Walt Disney Studios, joining Pixar and Lucasfilm in centralizing many of its film-related functions in Burbank, with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and co-president Louis D’Esposito continuing to lead the Marvel Studios team reporting to Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn."

This is going to make Feige's life so much easier. Perlmutter is described as a "low-profile billionaire who has contributed to Marvel's reputation in Hollywood for frugality and secrecy (as THR reported in a 2014 feature, he attended the premiere of Iron Man in a disguise to go undetected and once complained that journalists at a press junket were allowed two sodas instead of one)."

I've heard even worse stories about him being a hardcore tightwad when it comes to money. One of THR's sources says, "Everybody knows Ike is difficult. This has been a long time coming. Kevin has grown his entire career under Ike and now it just makes sense."

It's been incredible to see what Feige has built with the Marvel Cinematic Universe and that he's done it under such a tyrannical ruler. Imagine what he'll be able to do now with Disney backing his decisions. These Marvel films are about to get even better!

Unfortunately for Jeph Loeb, head of Marvel Television, he still has to report to Perlmutter, who will maintain oversight over Marvel's TV group, publishing, and animation.

Wire Cutters is a wonderful animated sci-fi short film that tells the story of a chance encounter between two robots who are mining on a desolate planet. There are consequences to the choices that these two robots make, and the outcome is unexpected. The short was directed by Jack Anderson, and it's a great piece of clever CG animated filmmaking. This is just as good as the short films that we are seeing Pixar and Disney pump out. It has a simple but meaningful concept, and I hope you all enjoy it.
