Terror Heads West in Mashup of THE HATEFUL EIGHT and THE THING

Yesterday, the first full trailer for Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight hit the internet, and cinephiles pretty much went nuts for it. Rightfully so: it looks amazing, and QT managed to get yet another stellar cast together for his latest western follow-up to Django Unchained. Tarantino's Death Proof star Kurt Russell is one of the main characters, and YouTuber Garrison Dean noticed some similarities between what we saw in yesterday's trailer and another Russell classic: John Carpenter's The Thing. As Dean himself says:

I've never done a straight mashup before, but... The Isolation. The Snow. Dudes. Kurt Russell.

I had to.

Check out the mashup below:

Clip From Pixar's INSIDE OUT Short - RILEY'S FIRST DATE

Pixar's most recent film Inside Out was such a wonderful story with great characters. There's no word on if we are going to see a sequel to the movie yet, but the animation studio has announced that there is a short film coming called Riley's First Date.

The first clip for the short aired during ABC’s Good Morning America. The story is set one year after the events that we saw in the film, and Riley is a 12-year-old girl in middle school. She and family are all settled in San Fransisco, and now she is starting to get attention from the boys. More specifically the one from the hockey game at the end of the movie, who was dumb-struck when he saw her. Her mom and dad are forced to deal with the situation, and all of their emotions are trying to figure out how to handle it.

The entire voice cast of the film return for the short, and the actors include Diane Lane and Kyle MacLachlan as Riley’s mother and father. Kaitlyn Dias provides the voice of Riley, and then of course there are her emotions that include Joy (Amy Poehler), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling), Fear (Bill Hader), and Sadness (Phyllis Smith).

Riley’s First Date will be included as an exclusive bonus feature on the home release of the film. It will be available on Digital HD on October 13th, the Blu-ray will hit shelves on November 3rd.

Will Smith Producing THE FRESH PRINCE OF BEL-AIR TV Revival

$

If Hollywood has its way, the 1990s will never die. Along with the slew of remakes and reboots that are coming to the big screen, the latest trend is to dig up the corpses of old TV shows and resuscitate those for new audiences. (In my mind, Girl Meets World is largely responsible for this.) We'll soon be seeing continuations of Twin Peaks, The X-Files, Full House, and more, and now another show has been tossed on the sacrificial altar to the '90s: The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

TV Line is reporting that a new version of the show is in the very early stages of development at Will Smith's Overbrook Entertainment production company, and if the show were to move forward, Smith — who was launched to fame by the original series — would produce.

The show would be "a present-day Fresh Prince reboot that puts a new spin on the fish-out-of-water tale while maintaining the spirit of the original series." There's no word yet on whether or not that means that it will be a completely new show with the same sort of premise, or a continuation closer in line with Fuller House or Girl Meets World that could leave the door open for returning characters from the original series. (I'm sure Alfonso Ribeiro is already readying his Carlton sweater and waiting by the phone.)

Would you watch a revival of The Fresh Prince? In the meantime, you can watch the intro to the show recreated in Grand Theft Auto V right here.

Two People Reportedly Passed Out Watching BITE - See The Trailer Now

Bite unquestionably looks like a low budget riff on The Fly, but that doesn't mean it can't be an effective, visceral piece of filmmaking on its own.

At the Fantasia International Film Festival earlier this month, the movie earned a bunch of publicity because two people reportedly fainted while watching it, while another threw up (in the barf bags that were handed out to audience members before the screening), and yet another fell and hit his head. This is the kind of thing that seems like it may be drummed up by plants in the crowd solely to generate pieces like this one, and if that's the case, then well done, you got me. But if those reactions to the film were real and natural, then Bite may be something worth checking out for those of you who are looking for the next potential cult horror movie to support. As far as I can tell, there's no word on an official release date yet.

While on her bachelorette party getaway, Casey, the bride to be, gets a seemingly harmless bite from an unknown insect. After returning home with cold feet, Casey tries to call off her wedding but before she's able to, she starts exhibiting insect like traits. Between her physical transformation and her wedding anxiety, Casey succumbs to her new instincts and begins creating a hive that not only houses her translucent eggs, but feeds on the flesh of others. As her transformation becomes complete, Casey discovers that everything can change with a single bite.

Emily Blunt Takes On The Cartel in New SICARIO Trailer

$

I was excited about Denis Villenueve's Sicario from the moment I heard about the premise and the cast, and my excitement continues with each new trailer that's been released for the film. Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin, and Benicio Del Toro star in the story of an FBI agent (Blunt) who is brought in to a border area between the U.S. and Mexico to try to help fight the war on drugs. She doesn't trust her guide (Del Toro) due to his questionable past, and things escalate quickly from there. It looks like it could be one of the best films of the year, and Villenueve's previous two films (Prisoners and Enemy) have definitely left an impression on me, so I'm hoping this one does the same.

Plus, it's just nice to see Blunt play a part that looks like it's worthy of her talents. She was great in Edge of Tomorrow and Looper, and I hope her career continues in an upward trajectory because I definitely want to see her in more good movies. Sicario opens in theaters on September 25th.

Full Size Version of THE LORD OF THE RINGS' Minas Tirith Being Crowdfunded on IndieGoGo

Well, no one will ever be able to accuse Jonathan Wilson and his team of not dreaming big. They've launched an IndieGoGo campaign to build a full size functioning version of Minas Tirith, the capital city of Gondor from The Lord of the Rings. Sounds pretty awesome, right? The major problem is that they've estimated that the cost to actually build it is approximately $2.9 billion. That's a lot of money to raise with 47 days left and 0% of their goal met so far, despite over 900 backers already.

If successfully funded, the hope is to begin building at the end of 2016 and complete the project by 2023. This seems totally nuts, and there's obviously no way it's going to happen, but wouldn't it be cool if there was a full size Minas Tirith that fans could visit as a tourist attraction? I think I'd have to go if it existed. Here's a little bit of info from the project's main page:

  • We are an ambitious team including architects and structural engineers who are passionate about creating a beautiful, inspirational and fully-functioning replica of Peter Jackson's depiction of Minas Tirith, as seen in his Lord of the Rings films.
  • We all share a love of Tolkien's work, and a desire to challenge the common perception of community and architecture. We believe that, in realising Minas Tirith, we can create not only the most remarkable tourist attraction on the planet, but also a wonderfully unique place to live and work.
  • We aim to create both residential and commercial properties, allowing for sustainable growth and a high quality of life.
  • Residential properties will be categorised by tier, quality and size. Tiers vary from 1-5, quality varies from 2-5 stars, with the higher star denoting higher quality, and size varies from 1-4 bedrooms. A "3.4.2 property", for instance, would be located in the 3rd tier of the city, be of a 4 star quality and have 2 bedrooms - perfect for a young family.

Would you go if their dream became a reality?

Trailer For Feminist Western THE KEEPING ROOM

$

0

Drafthouse Films has just released the trailer for The Keeping Room, a new feminist western starring Brit Marling, Hailee Steinfeld, and Sam Worthington (remember him?). It has elements of a home invasion thriller like Straw Dogs with the threat of sexual violence, and it looks like it's giving the women at least a fighting chance against male Civil War soldiers who come after them. It's nice to see these characters — who, let's face it, would barely be on the edges of the frame in a male-centered film — take action, and it looks like an intense survival story that's definitely worth checking out.

The film hits theaters in limited release on September 25th, and will roll out nationwide in October.

In this radically reimagined American Western set towards the end of the Civil War, Southerner Augusta (Brit Marling, Arbitrage, The East) encounters two renegade, drunken soldiers (Sam Worthington, Avatar) who are on a mission of pillage and violence. After escaping an attempted assault, Augusta races back to the isolated farmhouse that she shares with her sister Louise (Hailee Steinfeld, True Grit, Pitch Perfect 2) and their female slave Mad (newcomer Muna Otaru.) When the pair of soldiers track Augusta down intent on exacting revenge, the trio of women are forced to take up arms to fend off their assailants, finding ways to resourcefully defend their home--and themselves--as the escalating attacks become more unpredictable and relentless.
Based on Julia Hart's revered 2012 Black List screenplay, and directed by Academy Award® Nominated Daniel Barber (Harry Brown), The Keeping Room is a tense and uncompromising tale of survival that also shatters both gender and genre conventions.

SPOILER WARNING!

For those of you who have been waiting to get your first glimpse at Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker in J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: The Force Awakens, today is your lucky day.

Starwars7 News posted the following photo from the set of what looks like a photoshoot for the movie. I've gotta say, Hamill looks like a freakin' badass Jedi Knight! Do you realize that this is the first time that we've ever really seen Luke all decked out in traditional looking Jedi robes!? How freakin' amazing is that!

Luke has gone through a lot of changes over the last 30 years. According to a previous report, the changes we see in the character in The Force Awakens could alter the way fans look at the original trilogy, as well as the arc planned for the upcoming universe. With regards to Luke, it was explained that "War distorts any soul, and getting older always comes with compromises. Each one takes a piece of you — parts that can’t be replaced like a cybernetic hand."

I love the look of Skywalker in the photo below! It's so freakin' exciting that we get to see his story continue in this next trilogy of films! What do you think of Luke's look!?

New Details For Han Solo STAR WARS Anthology Film

new-details-for-han-solo-star-wars-anthology-film

Last month it was officially announced that Phil Lord and Chris Miller would be directing a Star Wars Anthology film based on Han Solo. Up until now, all we knew about what is being planned was that the story "focuses on how young Han Solo became the smuggler, thief, and scoundrel whom Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi first encountered in the cantina at Mos Eisley."

The screenplay is being written by Lawrence Kasdan and Jon Kasdan, and now, thanks to EW, we have some more information to share with you regarding the movie. There's no information on what actors they are looking to cast in the role, but they are looking for someone in their late teens or early twenties. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy says:

“He’ll definitely be probably in the high teens, low 20s. We’re not introducing you to a 10-year-old Han Solo.”

Even though fans are excited about this movie, there's still the question on how much of Solo's past should remain a mystery. When asked about that, Kennedy replied:

“Those are exactly the questions we’re asking. There’s got to be a reason for [the stand-alone film] to be. And obviously the thing that Star Wars has always done so well is it doesn’t spend a lot of time [explaining] the stories that have come before. We don’t want to do that either. We don’t want to spend time going back and answering a lot of questions that, quite frankly, I don’t think people want answered.”

They've obviously come up with some kind of story for the character that they feel needs to be told. When asked how the studio plans on handling the story, she gives a little insight into what we can expect:

“I think the key here is that we are identifying an event or events in Han Solo’s life that gives you some idea of who he is and why he is the character we have all known to love.
“You can imagine, given who we’ve chosen to come in and direct, it should be very entertaining and funny. Han Solo is the character inside Star Wars that everybody knows has a wit and sense of humor. So that’s what this should be.”

She obviously isn't going to give any big plot points, but it's safe to assume that his past could involve other characters like Chewbacca, Lando Calrissian, Jabba the Hutt, and maybe even Greedo.

Kasdan was offered to help develop several different Star Wars projects that Lucasfilm is looking to tackle, and out of all of the projects they put in front of him, he chose Han Solo. He said he told Lucasfilm, "I would write a movie about Han Solo. He’s always been my favorite."

He's the favorite of a lot of Star Wars fans, and I can't wait to see what Kasdan comes up with for the character. I know he won't let us down.

The Han Solo film will be released on May 25th, 2018.

STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS Action Figures Reveal Interesting Info

Some photos have leaked out of the first series of 3.75" action figures for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. They include figures for Kylo Ren, Finn, Captain Phasma, Flame Trooper, and a few others, some of which are kind of surprising, because they might reveal some interesting information regarding the film. They reveal possible SPOILERS, so you might not want to read any further or scroll through the photos.

Apparently, WalMart broke the embargo and put these out for sale early. They weren't supposed to be released until "Force Friday," which is September 4th.

One of the figures is a young Luke Skywalker, and he is wearing the same outfit he wore in The Empire Strikes Back in the city of Bespin. It also looks like there is a figure of Darth Vader. The picture is a bit blurry, but his mask looks different. I'm pretty sure it's him, though, because the torso design is unmistakably Vader's.

I've heard that there will be some flashbacks in the movie, and maybe these surprising action figures are related to those. You can scroll through the photos below! To catch up on all of our Star Wars: The Force Awakens news, click here.

Q.U.B.E.: DIRECTOR'S CUT Review

It's hard to talk about the first person puzzle game Q.U.B.E. without drawing comparisons to Portal. They are both incredibly similar in regards to presentation and aesthetic, and yet there are some differences. Q.U.B.E. was released back in 2011 but only recently received a Director's Cut. The Director's Cut adds story elements that were sorely lacking from the original product.

The story is written by acclaimed writer Rob Yescombe who also wrote Crysis and Alien: Isolation. The story is reminiscent of the Tom Cruise film Oblivion, and there are sprinklings of other sci-fi films throughout. The game tasks you with manipulating colored objects throughout levels to get to the endpoint. The high contrast of color in a colorless world looks absolutely terrific. The difficulty is always engaging and never punishing, which is exactly what I want from a puzzle game. At times the physics are a little wonky, but that does not hinder the experience all that much. The Director's Cut also adds 10 levels for speedrun trials and they are delightful. My biggest complaint with the game is that the main story is too short. If you like games like Portal, go ahead and do yourself a favor and get Q.U.B.E. I hope that I see Q.U.B.E. 2 in the near future because this is a world I really want to return to.

QUBE is available now for Xbox One, PS4, PC, and Wii U.

Patrick Stewart Confirms Professor X Will Have Significant Role in WOLVERINE 3

Earlier this year, Patrick Stweart talked about the possibility of joining Hugh Jackman in Wolverine 3. In an interview he said, "What I'm very excited about is that we have been talking about a Wolverine movie, which would team Hugh Jackman and myself together. Wolverine and Professor Xavier. That would be a very different sort of X-Men from the four movies that I've already done."

The movie will most likely be based on the Old Man Logan comic book storyline, and in a recent interview with Collider, Stewart was asked about Professor X's involvement and the Old Man Logan story arc. This is what Stewart had to say about it:

I think what you say is true. There is a project in development. I understand that Professor Xavier will be making more than an appearance, however, and that intrigues me. And the idea of an old Wolverine – I’m really looking forward to Hugh Jackman getting old. You know, damn him. He looks so great! So I’m hoping to see him covered in prosthetics, you know? And then he’ll make me look better if that’s the case.

So this solidifies Stewart's involvement with the third Wolverine film, which will be Jackman's last time playing the character. Old Man Logan was written by Mark Millar with art by Steve McNiven. For those of you not familiar with the comic, here's a brief synopsis:

Nobody knows what happened on the night the heroes fell. All we know is that they disappeared and evil triumphed and the bad guys have been calling the shots ever since. What happened to Wolverine is the biggest mystery of all. For 50 years, no one has heard hide nor hair from him...and in his place stands anold man called Logan. A man concerned only about his family. A man pushed to the brink by the HULK GANG. A man forced to help an old friend--the blind archer, HAWKEYE--drive three thousand miles to secure his family's safety. Get ready for the ride of your life, Logan.

Professor X doesn't have a big role in the Old Man Logan storyline in the comic, so things are obviously going to be changed up a bit for the movie, which is fine. It wouldn't be the first time a comic book story was retooled for a feature film!

James Mangold (The Wolverine) is coming back to direct the movie, and it will be released in theaters on March 3rd, 2017.

SONIC DREAMS Is the Stuff of Nightmares

$

I'm not sure if you've been to the darker side of the internet, but if you've recently made it out alive, then I'm sure you have heard of Sonic Dreams. It is a bunch of lost (i.e. fake) games that Sega made but never got around to producing because of whatever reasons. If you haven't checked it out and want to know what the true meaning of the scary side of the internet is, please do. What looks like Sega's answer to Mario Paint or Pokemon Snap turns out to be something far darker.

There are three parts you can watch and a fourth that is unavailable. It looks and acts like something Sega might have produced at one point. The first part is a Sonic Maker. You are able to color and create your own Sonic original character. Nowadays, this seems like a fanfic's dream, but back when the game purports to have been created, Sonic had yet to become the video game equivalent to a creepy uncle who is always looking for a job and sometimes stays at your parents' house while he's working on the next big thing. Sure, he says he's got this big project in the works that will prove he can be successful, but all you really know about him is that he can't hold onto a job and you've heard creepy stories about what he does in his spare time. But that's for another day. So in Sonic creator you color and twist and name your own sonic monstrosity, something I can definitely see Sega at one point doing. Nothing too out of bounds.

The next part is a bit weirder. It's a Sonic Film Maker. You make eight second videos in a first person shooter style where the camera is the gun. You hit one button to record and can move things around on a small set. Nothing too out of ordinary. A little bit of an empty set, but it was an unfinished game, so maybe it's fine. As you film different scenes of the "movie" things get... darker. I won't spoil it for people, but let's just say that at a certain point in the filmmaking process you realize that there is no way Sega would ever let this thing get off the ground. It scars you in places you didn't think you could get scars. As I played it, I literally thought I was dreaming, because this couldn't be a real game. I doubted my own AWAKENESS thanks to this game, which isn't as dramatic as doubting one's sanity, but I lost that years ago.

Finally, the next part is a VR kind of game where you live as a person and interact in a room with Sonic, who's there with you. What happens next is just... I can't... I don't want...  Let's just say, if I didn't lose my sanity years ago, I certainly would have by this point.

There are games out there which terrify, stupefy, confuse, and even Madden (not go crazy, I'm actually talking about Madden 2014), but this game — it makes you wonder if anything is real anymore. It is the "Too Many Cooks" of video games.  So grab some "Oregano" and pop some popcorn, cause you're in for a bouncy time. Remember — gotta go fast!

The only way to get the download the game is to visit this obscure tumblr.

Andrew Garfield Comments on Tom Holland Playing Spider-Man

Say what you will about Marc Webb's Amazing Spider-Man films, but I thought Andrew Garfield was great in the role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man. I was actually kind of bummed out when I first learned he wouldn't play the role again.

Tom Holland is the new young actor stepping into the shoes of the web-slinging superhero, and we have yet to see what that's going to be like. Playing Spider-Man was a dream come true for Garfield, but he's not bitter about being replaced. In an interview with ET Online Garfield was asked about Holland taking on the role of Spider-Man and he said,

"It feels lovely, especially because Tom Holland is a really, really great actor. He was in this movie The Impossible and he was just this incredibly powerful, sensitive, just wonderful young actor. And [he's] a dancer, so his body’s the right [form]. I'm just really excited to just be a fan again as opposed to bearing the weight of it."

He goes on to say that he can't wait to see Holland's performance. I think that goes for all of us! I'm really hoping that we get to see out first look at Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War at the D23 Expo this weekend. I know it's a long shot, but Marvel might surprise us!

The STAR WARS Anthology Film Josh Trank Was Working on Is Still a Go

$

I'm sure you all remember that Fantastic Four director Josh Trank was attached to direct one of the Star Wars Anthology films for Disney and Lucasfilm. During Star Wars Celebration earlier this year, we learned that Trank was no longer attached to the project. I can only imagine it was due to all of the crazy drama surrounding the Fantastic Four production and the lack of quality of the film.

I'm sure Star Wars fans are extremely happy that Trank is no longer directing that movie. The project was left in limbo after his departure, but it's certainly not dead. The film is still in active development, but without Trank there to screw it up.

Lucasfilm has yet to bring on a new director, but while talking to Entertainment Weekly, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy reassured fans that they are still moving forward with the movie, which has obviously been delayed. She said,

"It’s still one of the stories that we absolutely want to tell. There is a lot of innovative technology in and around what it is we’re doing with that story, so for a lot of reasons, we were comfortable postponing that. But we’re definitely still developing it."

There's no information one what exactly the story for the film will involve, but the report speculates that it will be released sometime in 2020. Kennedy went on to explain that Lucasfilm and the producers, including Simon Kinberg, are going to take their time and make sure they get this film right, which is reassuring.

There have been rumors that the movie centers around Boba Fett, but since then there have been reports that the bounty hunter could be included into all three of the Anthology films that are in development. It was also rumored that they were having problems developing a story for the bounty hunter. Maybe now that Trank is out, they will have better luck.

As of right now the slate of Star Wars films include J.J. AbramsStar Wars: The Force Awakens opening December 18th, 2015, Gareth EdwardsStar Wars: Rogue One on December 16th, 2016, Rian Johnson’s Episode VIII in May of 2017, Chris Miller and Phil Lord’s young Han Solo film in May of 2018, and Episode IX will hit theaters on 2019.

Sinister Harley Quinn Cosplay Photos

Photographer Evan Smith sent us these cool Harley Quinn cosplay photos from a shoot that he and his friend organized. The images came with the following note:

"My friend and I had been dying to get a cosplay session done and so she threw together a Harley Quinn costume and we shot this set. I wanted to do something inspired by Heath Ledger's Joker without mimicking it and step aside from the usual 'sexy Harley'."

As a big fan of Harley Quinn, I really liked how the costume and these photos turned out, and they succeeded in what they were trying to accomplish. Quinn is such a sinister character, and these photos definitely get that point across. What do you all think?

New PREDATOR Movie Has a Fresh Perspective and Will Reinvent the Franchise

new-predator-movie-will-reinvent-the-franchise

Last year we learned that Iron Man 3 director Shane Black would be developing a new Predator film for 20th Century Fox. In a recent interview with Collider, producer John Davis gave an update on the progress that has been made and said that the version they are working on has a fresh perspective and will reinvent the franchise.

“Shane shot a movie and he’s doing a pilot now, but I’ve read a lot of his script and I think it’s genius. I think it’s genius and I think it’s entertaining, and what it did is recreate a famous franchise in a different, interesting way; looking at it from a different light. He’s just an amazing writer-director. He’s got a way of looking at this that makes you excited again. I love this franchise. It was the first movie I ever did. I remember in being in the jungle with Arnold [Schwarzenegger] as a 28-year-old and going, ‘This is a fun business!’…Shane’s amazing. He’s an amazing storyteller.”

Black is set to direct the new film and the story he's writing will tie into the continuity of the franchise. He is working on the script with Fred Dekker, Black's co-writer on the classic film Monster Squad. Davis went on to say:

“Shane’s got a writing partner, Fred Dekker. They’ve been doing it together and Fred’s great. The two of them together, they’ve been in the business for a long time, but the writing is so fresh, the perspective is so fresh. I’m telling you you’re going to get something you don’t expect and you’re going to say, ‘This is the most entertaining way to reinvent a franchise.’ I mean he’s the guy who wrote ‘Iron Man 3.'”

I'm not sure if Iron Man 3 is the best example to use. A lot of Marvel fans didn't like how that movie turned out. But, he did work on other films like the Lethal Weapon franchise, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and of course Monster Squad. I'm looking forward to seeing what he is planning for Predator.

I'm a huge fan of the original 1987 John McTiernan-directed film with Arnold Schwarzenegger, but none of the Predator films since then have been as good. Do you think Black is the guy who will finally give us a Predator movie that will live up to its potential?

Guillermo del Toro "Will Never Again Get Involved With Video Games"

$
0
0

Writer/director Guillermo del Toro has a flair for visuals that would transfer wonderfully to the video game medium, but after two separate attempts to make a game have failed (most recently, the collapse of Silent Hills for Konami), del Toro is giving up on gaming completely.

In an interview with ShackNews, he says:

“I have proven to be the albatross of video games. I joined THQ, and THQ goes broke. I join Kojima, and Kojima leaves Konami. I have decided, in order not to destroy anyone else’s life, I have decided I will never again get involved in video games. Otherwise, I’ll join someone and his house will explode, or something...if I join another video game, World War III will start.”

So it seems like he's made up his mind and he's truly finished with gaming. Based on his previous experiences, I can't say I really blame him. I guess that means that whatever he and Hideo Kojima are working on together is not a new game after all. It's a shame that we'll never get to see what he could do in that medium, since he's such a stellar visual storyteller; whatever game he did would have been legendary, but now it'll be just another "what if" scenario that geeks discuss with a sense of longing, alongside his version of The Hobbit and his take on At The Mountains of Madness.
