Concept Art for Pennywise The Clown from IT, Predator and More

Writer and director Vincenzo Natali (Splice, Cube, Hannibal) has released several pieces of concept art and pitch work online from film projects he has developed over the years. Some of the unmade projects featured here including a terrifying vision of Pennywise the clown from Stephen King’s ItPredator, and an adaptation of the William Gibson novel Neuromancer, which looks like it could have been awesome. You can read more about the project here

I've always been fascinated by artwork from undeveloped film projects like this. This is the raw beginning stages of film development, and it give us some insight into what the director was imagining in his head. Check out the art below and let us know what you think about his vision for these projects.

Margo Goes Missing in Second PAPER TOWNS Trailer

I somehow missed the first trailer for Paper Towns when it debuted a couple of months ago, so this second trailer was my first look at the film. I think it looks pretty great, with it starting out looking like exactly what you'd expect from a typical high school movie and then taking a hard turn when one of the main characters disappears. Does Margo (Cara Delevingne) look like a Manic Pixie Dream Girl who's there to teach Quentin (Nat Wolff) a lesson about himself? That's how the trailer sort of makes it look, but I trust writers Scott Neustadter & Michael H. Weber (The Spectacular Now) to deliver something that's a little more than meets the eye.

Paper Towns arrives in theaters on July 24th.

5 Reasons Why You Should Be Watching STEVEN UNIVERSE

$

If you have kids, or just a thing for Cartoon Network shows, you've undoubtedly seen at least a preview for its show Steven Universe. Initially, I dismissed it as a kiddy show, and make no mistake, it is for kids, but it also caters to a much broader audience. Its sci-fi elements and unique animation have slowly drawn me into watching it regularly, and I'm going on record to say I'm a fan. Because I don't want to be that guy who claims he likes a cartoon designated for children without feeling justified, I have five reasons why you should give it a shot as well.

It's Lighthearted Sci-Fi

The basic plot of the show follows Steven, a young boy living in Beach City. Steven is half human and half "Gem." Steven's mother Rose (presumed dead) came to Earth with the Gems several thousand years ago initially to conquer it, but with the help of her closest friends rebelled against the home world to save humanity and ultimately become its protectors. With their alien super powers, her friends Amethyst, Pearl, and Garnet protect both Steven and humanity from danger, as well as the rest of the Gems who rediscovered the planet after all this time.

None of this is immediately made obvious throughout the show, mind you, as it's told through Steven's point of view. Steven, who has inherited his mother's ability, is technically able to use super abilities like his guardians, but is still too young to use them at will. An episode can range from all-out crisis action to just a casual day with friends where Steven learns something that helps him grow both as a Gem and human. While the show is overtly geeky in its influences, art style, and themes, you wouldn't really get that vibe watching it. It's incredibly accessible, and as easy for a non geek to watch as the most hardcore of fans. Not many shows can pull that off, let alone a children's show.

It's Inspired By A Lot Of Popular Anime

If you couldn't tell from the art style, the show's creator, Rebecca Sugar, is a fan of anime. The art looks like '70s anime, or Homer Simpson's face on the front of that Mr. Sparkle Japanese ad. Sugar cites shows such as Hayao Miyazaki's Future Boy Conan and Revolutionary Girl Utena as major influences to her show. The use of dominant female characters and the childhood sense of wonder in chaotic situations really draws to that.

The Heroes Are Mostly Female

Steven is of course the main character of the series, but Amethyst, Pearl, and Garnet are his super guardians. It isn't a weird "harem" kind of scenario either, as Steven is a kid and thousands of years younger than his fellow Gem comrades; it's more of a big sister/mentor scenario. It's one of those things that you really don't see as unique until you start to look around and see there isn't really anything else currently like it on television. It's worth mentioning that Steven Universe is the first show in Cartoon Network history to have a woman show creator, so that might be the reason for the refreshing change of pace.

The Animation And Music Are Awesome

I've already mentioned how the art style of the show is similar to that of a '70s style anime, but it also has a style similar to Adventure Time. This is incredibly evident when listening to the show's music, which is the warm synthed-out chiptunes and indie music the show featured. Before working on Steven Universe, Sugar was in charge of running Adventure Time, so I would suppose the similarities are bound to be there. That's not at all a bad thing, of course.

It's For Kids...But It Can Get Deep

In addition to the sci-fi focus and adventures, a lot of the show is Steven coping through life without a mom. The Gems mentor Steven in some respects, but also answer questions about his mother when he asks. Sometimes things get too intense and you realize that Steven isn't some full-blown super hero, he's just a kid. He's written like a real child thrown into a real world with an odd premise, and it's awesome to watch a show that features that. Hopefully it sticks around for us to see how it all plays out, and it already has a strong following of all ages. Let's hope it isn't quietly cancelled and is forced to become a cult hit as the years roll on.

Han Solo's Backstory Just Got A Lot More Interesting Thanks To Marvel's New In-Canon STAR WARS Comic

$

Han Solo may be the most beloved Star Wars character of all time. Harrison Ford brought an incredible swagger to the role of the space smuggler in the original trilogy, and he's the clear "bad boy" of the galaxy far, far away. I'd argue that part of the reason we like him is because he has a sense of mystery to him. We don't have every piece of his history completely mapped out, so there's room for everyone to use their imaginations to fill in Solo's backstory however they want — until that rumored prequel fills in some of those gaps, anyway.

Now, Marvel's ongoing Star Wars comic has just filled in a major plot point in the character's history. And remember, along with the barrage of upcoming books this year, the comic is one of the few things that's actually considered canon in the Star Wars universe. So this is the real deal, folks.

This news could be considered a major SPOILER, so if you don't want to know, then click away right now. Here we go...

Han Solo is married?! That seems like a game-changer. I haven't read the comic yet myself, but as io9 points out, this comic is set just after the first Death Star explodes at the end of A New Hope, meaning that Solo has been married since the first time we saw him in that cantina, and depending on what happens in this comic, there's a chance he's married during The Empire Strikes Back, also. I'm sure whatever happens here will retroactively change how we watch Han and Leia's relationship develop over the original trilogy in a pretty significant way.

Overlooked WOLVERINE Fan Film is a Must-Watch

Back in 2013, SoKrispyMedia released a Wolverine fan film in anticipation of James Mangold's The Wolverine, and somehow we missed it. But I just saw it for the first time this morning, and it's pretty damn awesome. So even though it's nearly two years old and some of you may have seen it already, I wanted to share it with you guys because it's one of the coolest X-Men-related fan films I've seen. It's not afraid to shy away from the brutality that burns at the center of Logan's character, and there are some pretty gnarly kills depicted here.

Jamie Costa plays Wolverine, who's ambushed by a team of mercenaries at a logging site. Costa has a great physicality to him, and is able to pull off some pretty rad moves. The visual effects are really solid and the action choreography is strong, but what really pushes this over the top for me is the score from Andrew Gerlicher, which gives the entire production n extremely professional sheen. Lost STAR WARS Theatrical Short BLACK ANGEL to Get Feature Film Adaptation

lost-star-wars-theatrical-short-black-angel-to-get-feature-film-adaptation

A few weeks ago the lost short film that screened with The Empire Strikes Back, Black Angel, found its way online and fans went wild for it. The 34-year-old fantasy short was directed by Roger Christian, and it was really quite fantastic.

That 1980 short is now getting a feature film adaptation, and Christian is returning to write and direct it! He is an Oscar-winning art director who worked on films such as Star Wars and Alien, and this will be the first time he’s directed a feature-length movie.

When talking to THR about the project, he said:

“It’s my passion project, has been for 35-36 years. I guess ‘patience is a virtue’ is a true saying.”

The story follow a Crusade-era knight on a quest to defeat an evil force to free a captured maiden. The film was shot in Scotland on a budget of only $38,000. The upcoming film will have a budget of around $15 million, and it will star Rutger Hauer (Hobo With a Shotgun) and John Rhys-Davies (Raiders of the Lost Ark, Lord of the Rings). When talking about the actors, the director said:

“These kind of faces fit into this ancient world so well, they’re powerful actors and I need that.”

The director went on to explain his goal with the film:

“I can make a huge epic film with that. I’m going down and dirty, I want the audience to smell the blood and the sweat and the tears. I’ll be doing fights in mud and rain.”

I’m 100% on board, and I hope he is able to give audiences just that. I think I’m way more excited about this project than I should be. It’s a great story, though. It's also pretty damn cool that after all of these years this has all finally come together for Christian.

Everything Wrong With THE LOST WORLD: JURASSIC PARK

The Lost World: Jurassic Park was a fun movie, but it was nowhere near as good as the first film in the franchise. With Jurassic World on the verge of hitting theaters, Cinema Sins has released a new Everything Wrong video that rips The Lost World: Jurassic Park a new one.

Yep. You knew this was coming, right? What with the new Jurassic World on the way. Here are all the sins we found in Lost World: Jurassic Park. There were a lot.

The video points 135 issues with the film, and most of them are well deserved. Sorry Spielberg, this just wasn't your best work. Jurassic World looks great though, and it supposedly ignores the events that took place in The Lost World.

Incredible In-Game Trailer for FALLOUT 4

Bethesda has officially announced Fallout 4, and they've released an awesome in-game trailer that fans of the franchise are sure to drool over. It gives us a look at the expansive world of the The Commonwealth, which is the fictional universe's version of Massachusetts. This is a city that has been referenced in prior games as a “war-ravaged quagmire of violence and despair.” The trailer also includes the infamous tagline "War. War never changes" narrated by Ron Perlman.

It's been seven years since Bethesda’s Fallout 3, which was the last game in the series they developed and released. 2010's Fallout: New Vegas was developed by Obsidian. Bethesda has also confirmed we'll be seeing gameplay from Fallout 4 at its E3 press conference on June 14th.

New GEARS OF WAR Will Be At E3 2015

Rod Fergusson made two announcements today, both of which I couldn't be happier about.

The first is that a new entry of Gears of War, not just the remaster (though that is probably a no-brainer as well) will be at E3. That is the probably the biggest news for fans, as the series has been relatively quiet since Gears of War Judgment vanished into the sunset with little more than a whimper. The second part is that Black Tusk Studios is no more. In its place is The Coalition. While some might see it as just a name change, to me it speaks to how invested the developer is into making this series not just part of their portfolio, but essential to their DNA. In his message (via Gameinformer), he spells it all out in detail.

Hi everyone - I'm Rod Fergusson, former studio head of Black Tusk Studios.
It’s not what you think.
Beginning today, the Vancouver-based Xbox team working on the Gears of War franchise will be known as The Coalition. What's in a name? In short, The Coalition speaks to who we are as a team, and what it is we're working on.
A coalition is a team of diverse individuals working together for a common purpose, a concept that we feel describes our studio quite well.
Fans will also recognize the Coalition of Ordered Governments (COG) from Gears of War lore.
When people hear 343 Industries, they associate it with Halo; when they hear Turn 10 Studios, they know that’s who makes Forza. Moving forward, when you hear The Coalition, we want you to think of Gears of War.
To see our new logo in motion, and to learn more about The Coalition, watch a special edition Rodcast [below].
Speaking of Gears of War, we're getting close to E3, where we will share more on what's next for Gears of War. Specifically, Gears fans should be sure to tune in to Xbox Daily: LIVE @ E3, on Monday June 15 at 4PM Pacific to see what we're working on.

Microsoft has really surprised me with the handling of the franchise since they purchased it from Epic, and this is just another cog (pun intended) in that process. There seems to be a real onus on getting back to what made the franchise the behemoth that it is, and I truly can't wait to see what The Coalition has in store. Some of my best gaming memories come courtesy of this franchise, but everyone has different aspects of it that they enjoyed more than others. That said, I want to hear what you hope is in the next installment, what isn't, and what you would like to see from the franchise as a whole.

Jennifer Lawrence Reveals First Photo For THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY - PART 2

I'm guessing Jennifer Lawrence will be happy to have The Hunger Games franchise behind her. The films absolutely contributed to her becoming a massive A-list star, but with this upcoming fourth movie in the franchise, it has to be getting a little bit boring for her to keep returning to the character of Katniss Everdeen — especially when Mockingjay - Part 1 was so dull (just my opinion). I'm excited to see how she grows as an actress and what kinds of projects she chooses once she's free from contractual obligations; that's when we'll start getting a sense of what she can really do.

But before she hits that milestone, though, there's the little matter of leading the revolution of Panem. Lawrence took to Facebook to share the first photo (above) from The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2, which came with the caption: "6.9.15 #MockingjayPart2 #Unite" Since June 9th is only a few days away and the film doesn't come out until November 20th, it's a safe bet that date either marks the beginning of some sort of viral campaign or, more likely, the release of a trailer. Head back here next week to find out what happens.

Behind The Scenes of MAD MAX: FURY ROAD's Stellar Visual Effects

I don't know about you, but even though I had some minor issues with Mad Max: Fury Road, I'm still riding high from my experience watching the movie. George Miller created such a fascinating, rich world full of amazing characters and unique visuals, and I think he deserves all the praise he's getting for his fantastic work on this film.

We've seen a video of some of the raw action scenes being shot in the African desert, but how did the camerawork and special effects come together to create the final product? Wired has a behind-the-scenes look at the processes that went into making this movie, including before and after shots from the production, and if you're as ravenous for cool Fury Road content as I am, this will be highly entertaining for you:

Outstanding Trailer For Michael Shannon and Andrew Garfield's 99 HOMES

Here's the first trailer for 99 Homes, a new film starring Michael Shannon as a man who evicts Andrew Garfield's family from their house. Garfield is down on his luck so he goes to work for Shannon, and as the trailer reveals, he ends up becoming just like him. This is a spectacular trailer, and it makes me think that this movie could end up being one of my favorites of the year.

Joey had the chance to see it at Sundance earlier this year (read his review), and after seeing this trailer, I'm now incredibly jealous. 99 Homes arrives in theaters on September 25th.

Set amidst the backdrop of the 2008 housing market catastrophe, Dennis Nash (Andrew Garfield), a hard-working and honest man, can’t save his family home despite his best efforts. Thrown to the streets with alarming precision by real estate shark Mike Carver (Michael Shannon), Dennis, out of work and luck, is given a unique opportunity—to join Carver’s crew and put others through the harrowing ordeal done to him in order to earn back what’s his. Delicately training his eye on the rigorous details, the reliably astute Ramin Bahrani imbues his characters with icy complexity to achieve his compassionate portrait of a man whose integrity has become ensnared within an all-too-relevant American crisis. With precision and care, Bahrani’s provocative character study applies all the cinematic tools at his disposal to explore the ethical dilemma at the heart of man’s struggle to reach higher—by whatever means necessary.

Samuel L. Jackson Says He Won't Be in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR

There are going to be so many actors in Captain America: Civil War, it's going to feel like we're watching another Avengers movie already. It should be great practice for Anthony and Joe Russo, the brothers who are directing Civil War and both parts of the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War, but it sounds like the experience will be missing one of the most important members of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Samuel L. Jackson spoke with Collider in a new interview, and the actor said that he would not be appearing in the upcoming Captain America sequel (see bold text below):

“It’s an amazing amount of fun. I finally met [comics writer] Mark [Millar], last year, when I was doing Kingsman, ‘cause he was on set one day, and I finally got a chance to thank him for making Nick Fury black and changing the whole dynamic. It’s really great to be the connective tissue between so many different characters in so many different films, that brings those guys together. But I’m not in Captain America 3. I can’t figure that out, but I’m not. I guess I’m still out there, trying to figure out what happened to S.H.I.E.L.D. and who these other people are.
But it’s an amazing honor to be that guy, to be Nick Fury, to be in that particular world, and to be a character that people believe. It’s great. I’m as grateful for being in that, as I was being in Star Wars with George [Lucas] and to play a character that people remember, like Mace Windu. It’s all great. It’s hard not to be a part of something that you know, if people study film for the next 200 years, they’ll be talking about Star Wars and The Avengers series, and all that stuff.”

Do you think Jackson's telling the truth here? It seems like a veteran like Nick Fury might be able to actually help Iron Man and Cap come to some sort of agreement. But then again, aside from his brief appearances in Age of Ultron, we saw him go off the grid at the end of The Winter Soldier, so it might be tough to justify his appearance if the government has anything to do with the Registration Act like it does in the comics.

He still has two more films on his 9-picture deal with Marvel, but he also told the outlet that he's looking for a contract extension to appear in more Marvel films in the future. Unlike a lot of the other more major players, it seems clearer that Fury would be a good candidate for bouncing all over the MCU and interacting with all sorts of different groups, and it will be cool to continue to see Jackson doing solid work as the eyepatch-wearing (former) spy if he gets the extension he's looking for.

Joel McHale Joins THE X-FILES Revival

Community star Joel McHale has joined the upcoming X-Files limited series as a guest star. He will be hunting for the truth as a character named Tad O’Malley, who is described as "the anchor of a popular conservative internet news network who becomes an unlikely ally for Fox Mulder."

McHale joins David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, who are returning to reprise their roles as FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. Mitch Pileggi also confirmed that he’ll be back as Walter Skinner. We've also reported that William B. Davis’ Cigarette-Smoking Man could return along with Annabeth Gish and Robert Patrick as special agents Monica Reyes and John Doggett. The latter two have yet to be confirmed, though.

It's not hard to imagine McHale in the world of The X-Files. I'm sure he'll fit right in. We're only going to get six new episodes from this revival, and if it's a hit with fans and audiences, we might get to see the journey of these characters continue

Here's How GAME OF THRONES Pulled Off The Phenomenal Battle of "Hardhome"

I was extremely impressed with this past weekend's episode of Game of Thrones, the eighth episode of season five entitled "Hardhome." I wrote about it here, and if you haven't seen it yet, I'd say this episode nearly made up for some of the rougher episodes earlier in the season.

(Spoilers ahead for "Hardhome.")

The episode ends with an extended fight sequence that ranks among the most impressive moments of the entire series thus far, and now HBO has released a four-minute video that shows the tremendous amount of work that went into pulling it off. There are a ton of cool moments in here, but the one I like best is a guy running after Kit Harington's Jon Snow filming him with a cell phone during one of the test runs of the fight sequence. It's a life-threatening event in the show, and it was amusing to see an old guy rushing to keep up just outside of the action. Watch it below:

Possible New Details of Martin Freeman's CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Character

$
0
0

We all know that Captain America: Civil War is going to be packed with familiar faces, but The Hobbit and Sherlock star Martin Freeman will appear as a new addition to the MCU. His character is still shrouded in mystery, and though we heard some details about who he may be playing, Latino-Review's source just dropped a new rumor that, if true, would connect him to a scene in Avengers: Age of Ultron. (Potential spoilers ahead, so beware.)

Keep in mind this is still an unconfirmed rumor, but the outlet says that Freeman will play a character named Edward Chase, the MCU's Prime Minister of England. A battle "goes south" at the beginning of the film involving Captain America's new Avengers team and some British soldiers, prompting Chase to put pressure on the government to push for regulation of superheroes.

So what's the Ultron connection? Well, there's a scene in that movie in which Andy Serkis' Ulysses Klaw is on the phone in the tanker in Wakanda and he says, "Now Minister, where were we?" The speculation is that he could have been talking to Freeman's character "to collect Vibranium to make weapons that the English can use to combat the increasing number of people with superpowers throughout the world." That also leads to more speculation that Klaw may have a cameo appearance in Civil War, which would be yet another actor added to an already immense cast.

We'll see how this all pans out, but it sounds very plausible to me from a story perspective. What do you all think?

James Wan Officially Set to Direct AQUAMAN

A month ago it was reported that The Conjuring and Furious 7 director James Wan was wanted by Warner Bros. to direct Jason Momoa in Aquaman. Well, they got what they wanted: Wan is officially set to direct the movie, and I'm sure he's going to do an awesome job with it!

Wan has proven time and time again that he's a talented filmmaker who knows what he's doing behind the camera. In fact I'd much rather see him direct the Justice League movies instead of Zack Snyder. Snyder is great with visuals, but his storytelling skills aren't really the best. Wan is great at telling stories and developing characters for the big screen. That fact that he's bringing his talents and skills to Aquaman is exciting.

Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, had this to say in a statement:

“We’ve been so lucky to have worked with James, first on New Line’s The Conjuring and now on their upcoming The Conjuring 2, and are thrilled to have him on board as we continue to expand our DC slate. The Aquaman film will be a major tentpole picture for us and James’s span of work has proven him able to take on any manner of project, bringing his incredible creative talent and unique voice to the material.”

Wan will also be supervising the script being written by Kurt Johnstad (300, 300: Rise of an Empire). The film is being produced by Charles Roven, Deborah Snyder, and Zack Snyder.

What do you think about Wan directing Aquaman? Here are some details on the character for those of you who need a little Aquaman refresher:

The King of the Seven Seas. Reluctant ruler of Atlantis. A man who holds his own against heroes like Superman and Wonder Woman. He’s so recognizable that when officials speak about the perils of sea pollution, they’ll whip out Aquaman references to sound hip.

Cast out from Atlantis as a baby, Arthur Curry grew up on land, thinking himself a normal human. But when he matured, Atlantis returned, claiming him as their rightful king. Caught between a surface world constantly ravaging the sea and Atlanteans looking to lash out in revolt, he’s committed to protecting the entire globe.

Aquaman is the king of all things aqua. He can breathe underwater, swim at tremendous speeds, and telepathically communicate with sea life. Being able to withstand ocean depths, he gets bonus points on land with his superhuman strength, enhanced senses, and nearly impenetrable skin. And although his courage and decisive nature have proven him a true heir to Atlantis’s throne, the continual conflict between land and sea makes him a citizen of both—and at home in neither.

FilmQuest Film Festival 2015 Nominations

filmquest-film-festival-2015-nominations

The FilmQuest Film Festival has announced the nominees for their 2015 event! There seem to be a lot of great films that will be screened at the event. I've been going through the information and trailers for some of these films, and I've been impressed with what I've seen so far. There are a lot of talented people who were involved with the development of these films, and we wish all of the nominations the best of luck! The winners will receive the FilmQuest Cthulhu Trophy. You can check out the screening schedule for these films here.

As you read the list of nominees, please make note that we have some fun here at FilmQuest. So if you don’t see you or your film nominated that does not mean you are not actually nominated or even the potential winner of a category. There are 8 nominees per category, but we only announce 7 of them. There is a secret 8th nominee for each category that we announce at the awards ceremony itself. In our first year, the Best Horror Short film winner, Itsy Bitsy Spiders, was one of these secret 8th nominees and they were blown away by their surprising win. It’s a fun, unique system, and definitely keeps everyone on their toes! Rest assured, we know all along who these secret nominees are, and they are voted upon equally and fairly by our judges with the other nominees.
We also decided to add a few last minute categories this year, namely the Best Director, Actor, Actress, Supporting Actress, Supporting Actor, and Screenplays for Shorts. Also note that short films are still eligible for all categories in which they qualify, and can still be nominated for Best Director, Actor, Actress, etc. against the Features.
We cannot encourage enough, and recommend greatly, that all nominees try their best to attend the festival and the festival’s award ceremony. If we have to ship your award to you, there will be high fees associated with the shipping of the prize due to the great value of each FilmQuest Cthulhu Trophy. In this case, we will not be able to cover your potential duty fees which can cost a pretty penny, and that will fall upon the winner to pay such fees. So we greatly encourage you to make plans to attend the festival if possible.
