JOHN CARTER Blu-ray Review

$
0
0

Disney released John Carter on Blu-ray and DVD, and it is loaded with some cool special features. Andrew Stanton directs the adaptation based on Edgar Rice Burroughs novel " A Princess of Mars". Friday Night Lights' Taylor Kitsch stars in the lead and Lynn Collins (X-Men Origins: Wolverine,The Number 23) as Dejah Thoris, Willem Dafoe (Spider Man, Boondock Saints) as Tars Tarkas, and Dominic West (300, The Wire) as Sab Than.

The story starts off after the Civil War with John Carter trying to make a living mining gold while pushing thoughts of his deceased wife out of his head. While searching a mysterious cavern for treasure he is inexplicably transported to Mars, which is on the brink of collapse. Carter soon realizes that he has special powers on Mars, powers that are pretty damn cool. As a result the warrior on Earth becomes a reluctant hero and becomes a part of an epic battle. As a result, Carter realizes that the survival of Barsoom is in his hands, and that he can make a difference in the lives of many.

I am not going to discuss the box office and marketing disaster of this film in depth, that is like beating a dead horse. What I am going to say is that a short sentence could have made all the difference in more people going to this film. Andrew Jones (@EthanRunt) pointed out to me that the use of the following would have made all the difference for this film - "A Warrior on Earth Becomes a Hero on Mars". That sentence is nicely displayed on the lower corner of the box art for the Blu-ray. That mantra should have been shouted from the rooftops when promoting John Carter.

If you did not see this film in theaters, I highly recommend you check it out on Blu-ray. I do not care if my credibility is shot by me saying that, I thoroughly enjoyed many parts of this movie. Yes it has its problems, but has so many elements that I look for in a sci-fi action adventure. The visual effects were truly sweeping, the action scenes were epic and the character development was decent. John Carter is very easy to relate to as a character. I have always liked the idea of a human being given special powers and then deciding to make a difference. Reluctant heroes have more heart I think than a regular hero who was born that way.

When Woola, Carter's alien dog sidekick was first introduced, I was worried we had another Jar Jar Binks on our hands. As time wore on I actually found this character a mixture of fun and lovable. Stanton and the visual effects team did a wonderful job of bringing Barsoom to life. The CG is magnificent and the colors are rich, so the Blu-ray looks majestic on my home theater.

My major gripes for the film is its length and the performances. For the length, the blame has to fall on the screenplay which was penned by Stanton, Mark Andrews and Michael Chabon. I am not sure what could have been cut though. The opening sequence with John Carter was necessary, but the scenes in London were not in my mind. They could have been trimmed down in length so we could have seen more of Carter out West. This would have meant we would have likely seen more of Bryan Cranston, which was nice for me as a fan of Breaking Bad.

In terms of the performances, I was underwhelmed with the majority. Kitsch did a solid job in this role, but seems to be a few steps behind leading man material. I have never seen an episode of Friday Night Lights, but I am interested in seeing him in a supporting role in Savages. Imagine if Disney had hired an A-list star for the lead, the box office would have been a lot higher. Lynn Collins and Dominic West are great actors, but they do not have the name recognition with American audiences. I would be willing to bet that many audience members did not even know that Dafoe was part of the cast? I have yet to decide if it is an issue of poor performances alone or poor marketing.

The magic does not end with the movie for this Disney disc. There are so many value packed special features that, make this a worthwhile investment. It is important to note that each of the special features are in HD, which is highly unlikely for many Blu-rays. I was happy to see an audio commentary track from Stanton and producers Jim Morris and Lindsey Collins. Commentary tracks can either be really good or down right boring. This track gives a lot of insight the development of the film, the computer generated and live-action performances and the overall process. There is also ten deleted scenes that feature optional directors commentary. I felt as if these had been rushed to get the disc out because some of the footage was not finalized with incomplete visual effects.

My two favorite special features are the 100 Years of Making and the 360 Degrees of John Carter. I wish the 100 Years of Making segment was a lot longer than its 10 minutes. The video delves into the life of Edgar Rice Burroughs and the history behind the John Carter series. I am a fan of history and the movie industry so it was cool to see how this project has developed over the years. The 360 Degrees segment is much longer, clocking in at 35 minutes. It brings you as close of a behind the scenes look as being on the set during a day of shooting. The production diary format goes behind the scenes to the makeup and costuming departments and gives us a glimpse into Stanton's daily routine. This is a must-watch segment for movie buffs.

The least favorites for me are the Barsoom Bloopers, which is basically two minutes I can not get back. I also love the interactive ability of the Second Screen, but do not like to do it during the movie. Disney does a great job with their Second Screen experiences, which give audiences the chance to follow along with the film on their iPad or laptop to gain a ton of additional content. It is a fun thing to do on an iPad actually while you are watching the film second time, but is distracting on a first viewing.

John Carter is a lot better than you may think. Stanton did a good job of creating a larger-than-life world full of marvelous CG effects and heart pounding action sequences. If you have seen this movie, the Blu-ray is a solid purchase with some great extras. This is a fun movie that has all the elements of a fun movie for the entire family.

THE AVENGERS: BATTLE FOR EARTH - Trailer E3 2012

$

One of the great things about Marvel video games is that they can put whatever characters from their universe they want in it. There's no studio that holds the rights to certain character like they do with the movies. So when we see an Avengers video game, like The Avengers: Battle for Earth we get to see Spider-Man, Wolverine, and others interact with the rest of the Avengers. Ubisoft showed off the first trailer for the game, and it starts out with a confrontation between Wolverine and Venom, which is very cool. The downside for me to this game is I don't really care for much of the style. It seems like something is just off.

Here's some info on the game:

Developed by Ubisoft Quebec, "Marvel Avengers: Battle for Earth’s" interactive environments are inspired by iconic Marvel comic artwork and the Secret Invasion storyline. "Marvel Avengers: Battle for Earth" features 20 different characters, including Avengers such as Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America and Thor, as well as other fan-favorite super heroes and super villains from the Marvel Universe. Be sure to visit AvengersBattleForEarth.com for more details.

The game will be available on XBox 360's Kinect and Nintendo's Wii U. Check out the trailer and let us know if it sells you on the game.  Below the trailer you'll find some screenshots from the game as well.

HERMAN MUNSTER Will Be Played by Jerry O’Connell

Jerry O'Connell hasn't really been doing much these days--at least, I haven't noticed him in anything. No matter what he does though, he'll always be Vern to me. He's just been cast as Herman Munster in NBC and Bryan Fuller's (Pushing Daisies) new series Mockingbird Lane. He'll join the previously cast Eddie Izzard and Charity Wakefield. I guess I can see O'Connell in this role, it will be easier to digest once we see him actually in it. It's also been announced that Mariana Klaveno has been cast as Lily Munster.

Bryan Singer will be directing the pilot episode which is a reinvention of the 1960s sitcom called The Munsters. The story follows a family of monsters that consists of vampires, werewolves, and Frankenstein, and their normal cousin (Wakefield). "O’Connell will play family patriarch, the handsome and gangly Herman Munster,  a great dad and devoted husband. He is married to Lily, a vampire, with whom he has fathered a 10-year-old boy, Eddie (Mason Cook). Strong but sentimental, Herman works at a funeral home, and worries that Eddie’s transformation into a werewolf and burgeoning awareness of his family’s origins will crush the boy’s spirit."

Since Fuller is behind the project, the series is sure to include some great visuals and cinematography. I loved the work he did on ABC's Pushing Daisies, and I hope he brings that polish to this new series. What do you think about O'Connell playing Herman Munster in this new series?

Clive Barker To Take on ZOMBIES VS. GLADIATORS

$

A few years ago I made a story pitch revolving around zombies, and I'll never forget what the guy I made the pitch to told me. He said that the Zombie genre was dead, and that there was no money it. I knew better, I knew one day zombies would blow up, and they did, they are bigger now than they ever were! The success of The Walking Dead just took the genre to a whole new level, now everyone is trying to jump in on the zombie bandwagon.

Amazon Studios has hired Hellraiser creator Clive Barker to rewrite a script for a movie called Zombies Vs. Gladiators. The story is set in the ancient Roman Empire and as a shaman is about to die in the Coliosseum he "casts a spell that rouses history’s first wave of zombies. It’s up to a gladiator to stop the spread of the zombie horde and save Rome." I believe the original story came from Greg Ostrin and Michael Weiss. Not sure if this is the same project, but it's definitely has the same title.

I can see how this could be a very entertaining movie. Gladiators taking on a horde of zombies just sounds awesome! Barker hasn't really done anything recently that I've liked though, so there's a chance it could end up not being as good as it could be. What do you think about Barker taking on this material?

JUSTICE LEAGUE Movie Moving Forward at Warner Bros.

$

Warner Bros. is finally moving forward with a Justice League movie. I bet the studio was kicking themselves in the ass for not doing it sooner. As you can imagine it was the epic success of The Avengers that finally got them rolling on it. Variety makes a point to say that the film "was more in anticipation of -- rather than a reaction to -- the box office success of The Avengers." I think we all know that's bullcrap though. The trade goes out of their way to make this point, and that makes me even more suspicious. Sure the studio has been talking about making it for years, but they didn't take any steps to get it into production until after The Avengers blew up.

Of course we know that DC Entertainments Justice League movie will never live up to the standards set by The Avengers. Sorry DC fans, but it's true. Not unless they get one hell of a great director to take it on that knows what their doing. They also need to keep comic writer Geoff Johns away from it. He's good at writing comics, but he doesn't know anything about making movies... look at what happened with Green Lantern, which he had a heavy hand in.

The studio has hired Gangster Squad screenwriter Will Beall to write the script for the Justice League adaptation. He's also written a few episodes of the TV series Castle. Gangster Squad looks like a great movie, but we still have yet to see how good the script is. I can't really make any judgements on Beall as I haven't really seen anything that he's written. Justice League is sure going to be one hell of a big project for him, and I hope he can pull it off. Beall is also writing a couple other films for the studio such as Lethal Weapon reboot and a remake of Logan's Run, which is expected to be directed by Nicolas Winding Refn and will star Ryan Gosling.

Warners originally tried to get a Justice League movie into production several years ago, with George Miller directing from a script by Kieran and Michele Mulroney. It would have starred Adam Brody as the Flash, Megan Gale as Wonder Woman and Armie Hammer as Batman. The studio ended up pulling the plug on the project due to lack of tax breaks, and it was also during the writers strike.

Warner Bros. is also currently developing The Flash for Greg Berlanti, Wonder Woman, Lobo and Spy Vs. Spy, which Ron Howard might end up directing.

Do you think the WB and DC Entertainment can pull together a Justice League movie worthy of the comics?

Damon Lindelof To Rewrite WORLD WAR Z

$

Wow... Paramount Pictures' adaptation of World War Z is sure going through some rough times, and the studio is desperate to make something good out of it. We recently reported that the movie will go through seven weeks of reshoots which is pretty crazy. But not to worry, Damon Lindelof is coming to the rescue! The studio has hired the Prometheus screenwriter to try to save the film by rewriting the script. According to THR he will be focusing on third act of the film. I guess once they got to the editing room they started seeing the movie sucked and felt it needed a new ending.

It's not surprising that the movie is having issues like this. If you've read the book by Max Brooks, then you know that a film adaptation wouldn't be easy as it's not told like a traditional story. I really hope this movie doesn't end up sucking, but things don't look good. This is what happens when you write the script for the movie while you're shooting it.

The film is being directed by Marc Forster (Quantum of Solace) and stars Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos (The Killing)James Badge Dale, and Anthony Mackie. The story is intended to be a zombie picture with sociological and political overtones, and the film is scheduled to start going through reshoots this fall.

Do you think Lindelof can save the movie?

Geek Issues: Is The Last Moment Robot Appropriate?

$

0

We will all die someday, and while the thought of lying in a hospital bed surrounded by family in friends is a touching scene, it's not always what happens. Dan Chen, creator of The End Of Life Care Machine has introduced a possible solution to this problem. At the time of your death a machine gently rocks your arm and speaks to you as you take your last breaths.

Hello (name)  I am the last moment robot.
I am here to help you and guide you through your last moment on earth.
i am sorry that (pause) your family and friends can't be with you right now, but don't be afraid. I am here to comfort you. (pause)
you are not alone, you are with me. (pause)
Your family and friends love you very much, they will remember you after you are  gone.  (pause)

In addition to it's bedside manner, the machine is also capable of recording a specific time of death and making the bed after the person is removed. Is the robot intended to replace human interaction? No, as stated on the site, the intent would be solely for placebo for any patient experiencing discomfort on their departure to what lies beyond. Is this a viable solution for the lonely dying in our hospitals?

On the one hand I see a scared individual, sitting in a bed knowing their time is near. They are scared, in a room full of strangers, and feel little reassurance that everything will truly be okay. While the voice is metallic and lacking the human emotion, the words are gentle reminders that all is well. Yes, your family will remember you, you are not alone, and you are loved. All this serves as comfort to a departing individual.

Conversely I imagine a dank and dark room. The nurse hasn't come back for hours and won't be returning. Instead here you are alone and strapped to an electronic machine which serves as a constant reminder that you are alone. Upon mention of your family you are reminded of past slights, transgressions, and overwhelming guilt knowing there is nothing you can do now. You wish things could have changed, that you could change, but lack the strength and the time to do so. You pass in anguish as the metallic voice cuts through your final moments on Earth.

There are certainly two sides to this argument, and I'm certainly curious to hear Mr. Chen's thoughts on this. Would robot bedside manner comfort you in your final hours? Or would you prefer the supervision of another individual?

IRON MAN 3 - The Iron Patriot Is Actually War Machine!

$

Last month some set photos leaked from Shane Black's Iron Man 3, leading everyone to believe that the Iron Patriot would be in the movie, but don't let the red, white, and blue suit of armor fool you. This is actually War Machine, and under the helmet we'll find Don Cheadle as Col. James "Rhodey" Rhodes. Of course in the movie, they will be calling War Machine Iron Patriot, it's just not at all related to the Iron Patriot in the comic.

The confirmation comes from our friends at Latino Review, who see the clearly visible white guy in the photos we've seen is just a stunt double, and it's not actor James Badge Dale as previously believed. So War Machine gets a patriotic new makeover, which makes more sense than what we thought was going on. What do you think about War Machine's new suit?

THE HANGOVER Part III Will Take Place in Vegas and Tijuana

It looks like the Wolfpack will be going back to Las Vegas in The Hangover Part III, and they will also find themselves trying to survive Tijuana.

Todd Phillips is back to direct the movie, and he's going to take the franchise to an even darker place, but they wont be using the same story format that they used in the first two films. What we know of the story so far is that it will follow Phil (Bradley Cooper), Stu (Ed Helms), and Doug (Justin Bartha) as they try to break Alan (Zack Galifianakis) out of a mental institute.

The news of the locations comes from Toronto and Las Vegas Sun. I imagine they will end up rescuing Alan from an asylum in Mexico, but we'll find out soon enough. The film goes into production this month and is set to be released next year on May 24, 2013.

I loved the first film, but didn't care for the sequel because it was basically the same movie with the same gags in a different location. I hope the third film ends up being a lot better than part two. Are you excited for The Hangover III

EASTERN PROMISES 2 - Plot Details and Vincent Cassel Returns

Chances are if you clicked through to read this article you've already seen David Cronenberg’Eastern Promises, but if you haven't watched it yet, do yourself a favor and watch it now. Thanks to Vulture, we've learned that Vincent Cassel is in negotiations to reprise his role Eastern Promises 2, which would reteam him with Viggo Mortensen

We also have the first plot details from the film, which will pick up right where the first movie left off. "With the incompetent underboss Kirill (Cassel) thinking that he and his henchman driver Nikolai (Mortensen) really have inherited the throne from his crime-lord father, without knowing that Nikolai is actually a clandestine agent working undercover in Russia’s federal security service."

I've been extremely excited about this film happening, but it's been hard to tell if it was actually going to happen or not. We've been hearing about it for about two years already, but it looks like it's definitely going to roll forward into production! Cronenberg will be shooting the movie next year, and I can't wait to see it! Are you excited about seeing a sequel to Eastern Promises?

PROMETHEUS Review - Breathtakingly Stunning Sci-Fi Epic

$
0
0

Like many of you, Ridley Scott's sci-fi film Prometheus was one of my most anticipated movies of the year. Everything I saw up until watching the actual movie looked amazing, and I had no doubt in my mind that it was going to be awesome, and guess what... it was! The movie was extremely entertaining, and it delivers some powerful horsepower. I do have a couple gripes about the film, but that doesn't change the fact that I still thought it was incredible!

One of the first things I want to talk about is the marketing campaign for this movie. The studio ended up showing way too much of the film in the trailers and clips. There were just way too many spoilers for the movie. It's like I knew what was going to happen next all the way throughout the film as I was watching it, and ultimately I knew how it was going to end because they basically put the stupid ass ending of the film in the trailers! I think I would have enjoyed the movie more if I didn't know as much as I did. But I guess that's my fault since I watched everything the studio released. There were still some cool and surprising moments, one in particular was incredibly intense! There's a brief clip of it in the trailer, but the moments leading up to what is shown in the trailer are absolutely terrifying and a lot of people in the theater found it hard to watch. You'll know the scene I'm talking about when you see it.

Even though I felt a lot of the film was spoiled for me, it still entertained the hell out of me, and it was still well made and beautifully shot. There were a few areas where I felt the story was stumbling on itself, but I think that might just have come down to the film's editing for time. I'm not saying the story was bad, I freakin' loved the story! I'm just saying it could have flowed a little better. There were just so many cool ideas they wanted to pack into the movie, and they did the best they could getting it all in there.

Scott and the screenwriters, Jon Spaihts and Damon Lindelof, took the audience on a gloriously epic journey with Prometheus. It was so cool to see them revisit the Alien universe Scott created. They took the mythology of Alien and created a film with it's own unique and horrifying awesomeness. The movie is most definitely a prequel set in the same world, but Prometheus is its own beast. It's definitely more of a sic-fi film than horror, the tone was closer to that of 2001: A Space Odyssey, than the original Alien film. There's still plenty of horror elements in Prometheus, it's just not the main focus. While we're on the subject of Alien, I will say that as much as I loved Prometheus, I still like Alien more.

The cast of the film did such an incredible job in their roles but Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, and Charlize Theron stole the show, and Theron is beautiful. The rest of the cast includes Idris Elba, Sean Harris, Kate Dickie, Rafe Spall, Logan Marshall-Green, Guy Pearce, and Patrick Wilson.

I also absolutely loved the design of the movie, you already kind of know what you're going to see from the stuff in the trailers, but watching it on the big screen and in 3D is a whole new mind-blowing experience. I also thought the humanoid alien designs were interestingly cool as well. You should watch Prometheus in 3D if you can; I don't usually recommend watching movies in 3D, but every once in awhile a film like this comes along that gives you a fantastic 3D experience.

There are a lot of thought-provoking themes in the movie as well. It's not a mindless movie, this one makes you think, which is always nice. The second trailer for the film opens up with the following dialogue, "A King has his reign and then he dies… it's inevitable." This right there is one of the themes of the movie, and in more ways than what you think. I don't want to go into any details because I'm trying to keep my review spoiler free, but it also includes themes from Greek mythology. Prometheus was actually a titan who represented human striving, the quest for scientific knowledge, the risk of overreaching or unintended consequences, and how his efforts to improve human existence could also result in tragedy. These are the underlying motives of the story wrapped up in a breathtakingly stunning sic-fi epic. It explores the dangers of searching for answers. This is something I think most of us can relate to. We look for answers to questions we have only to find the answers we sought weren't the ones we were looking for.

I know you're going to love Prometheus, I honestly don't see how you can't--it's got everything we love about movies. If you've already seen, it tell us what you thought below!

Animated Tribute to Tim Burton's Films

Here's a great animated video created by Martin Woutisseth paying tribute to the wonderful films of director Tim Burton. The video is called Tim Burton: A Filmography and was made for a contest organized by "La cinematheque francaise." Here's a note from the artist on making the video,

Animation made with mixing each Burton movies. Typography, colors, patterns and symbols are re-interprating. The old and the young Burton are both still working on their main passion : the stop motion, the fantastic and the gothic culture. Visuals are created from original posters, or from movies's scenes. If I couldn't find the right attitude, I drew it.

One of the most big challenge was to stayed sober in the animation without to seems poorly animated. One week before to upload officially, motivated friends saw it and gave me feed back on weak points to improve it the best I could. Three months was necessary to make it. Most of the time was spent to find the perfect visual for each movies. The thing was to make the fans of each movies enjoyed their favorite one.

It turned out pretty impressive. Check it out below, and let us know what your favorite Tim Burton movie moment is.
