MAD MAX: FURY ROAD Furiosa Poster Art by Tim Odland — "Let's Go!"

mad-max-fury-road-furiousa-poster-art-by-tim-odland-lets-go

Artist Tim Odland has released a cool Mad Mad: Fury Road-inspired print featuring Charlize Theron's Furiosa. I love this character, and I hope that Fury Road isn't the last we see of her in the Mad Max franchise. The illustration is a perfect parody of the classic "Rosie the Riveter" poster. When talking about what prompted him to create this piece, Tim said:

"How can any artist who saw that movie not be inspired! What an expansive universe that just tugs at imagination. There were so many great visuals and very colorful characters. It was refreshing to see a female character be such a badass. At no point did the fact that Furiousa [sic] was holding her own, feel cheap and pandering. I never though, "Yeah right" I totally believed she was kicking butt  taking names and not someone to be messed with. Such a great movie I'm excited to see how this inspires the future of action."

If you want to buy a print of this, they are available for $30 right here. I'm a big fan of Odland's work, and we've featured a few of his pieces in the past, which you can check out at the following links: Sloth and Chunk GOONIES Fan ArtMAD MAX Caricature Art, STAR WARS Fan Art - "Bounteous Bounty Hunting and "Creeping Horrors From the Depths of Time and Space!" First Trailer For Jason Segel and Jesse Eisenberg's Sundance Hit THE END OF THE TOUR

Here's the first trailer for The End of the Tour, the new drama from director James Ponsoldt (Smashed, The Spectacular Now) that made waves at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. (Read Joey's review here.) The film stars Jason Segel as author David Foster Wallace and Jesse Eisenberg as Rolling Stone reporter David Lipsky, and it tells the true story of the five-day interview session they had following the publication of one of Wallace's novels.

From the trailer alone, it appears to have captured the relationship between interviewer and interviewee in a way that True Story couldn't earlier this year, and Segel in particular looks like he gives a great performance that's different from anything we've seen from him before.

The End of the Tour arrives in theaters on July 31st.

THE END OF THE TOUR tells the story of the five-day interview between Rolling Stone reporter (and novelist) David Lipsky (Jesse Eisenberg) and acclaimed novelist David Foster Wallace (Jason Segel), which took place right after the 1996 publication of Wallace's groundbreaking epic novel, Infinite Jest. As the days go on, a tenuous yet intense relationship seems to develop between journalist and subject. The two men bob and weave around each other, sharing laughs and also possibly revealing hidden frailties - but it's never clear how truthful they are being with each other. Ironically, the interview was never published, and five days of audio tapes were packed away in Lipsky's closet. The two men did not meet again. The film is based on Lipsky's critically acclaimed memoir about this unforgettable encounter, Although Of Course You End Up Becoming Yourself: A Road Trip with David Foster Wallace, written following Wallace's 2008 suicide.  Both Segel and Eisenberg reveal great depths of emotion in their performances and the film is directed with humor and tenderness by Sundance vet James Ponsoldt from Pulitzer-Prize winner Donald Margulies' insightful and heartbreaking screenplay.

Are These The Top 10 Movie Sets Ever Built?

Having just seen Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring on the big screen again recently (and in a pretty unique way, I might add), I'm confident that his New Zealand sets rank among the best ever created in film history. The way his team was able to blend real life locations with props completely immerses the viewer in the reality of the film, never once allowing us to get into our own heads and start thinking about the hows and whys of the production choices.

Cinefix has put together a list of their Top 10 movie sets ever built, and they did a great job choosing sets that have a massive scale with much smaller miniatures and minimalist designs. There are also a bunch of great bonus choices they throw in alongside their final picks. I'm pretty impressed with their list — do you have a favorite movie set that didn't make the list?

An intense first trailer has been released for Toby Maguire's upcoming chess film Pawn Sacrifice. The movie is based on the real-life events of legendary chess champion Bobby Fischer. Fischer is a fascinating subject, and it looks like director Edward Zwick (Legends of the Fall) and screenwriter Steven Knight (Locke, Peaky Blindersdid a great job bringing his story to life. There's a great documentary called Bobby Fischer Against the World which you should check out if you haven't already before you see this movie.

The film is set during the height of the Cold War as "American chess prodigy Bobby Fischer (Maguire) finds himself caught between two superpowers when he challenges the Soviet Empire." Also starring Liev Schreiber as his Russian arch rival Boris Spassky, "Pawn Sacrifice chronicles Fischer’s terrifying struggles with genius and madness, and the rise and fall of a kid from Brooklyn who captured the imagination of the world."

The film also co-stars Peter Sarsgaard (Blue Jasmine), Lily Rabe (American Horror Story), Robin Weigert (Sons of Anarchy), and Michael Stuhlbarg (A Serious Man). Pawn Sacrifice is set to open in select theaters on September 18th.

5 Things I Would Love To See From Telltale and Marvel

$
0
0

A while back, Telltale games and Marvel announced an upcoming partnership on a new series. While we don’t know anything more than the fact that it exists, it's always fun to speculate. We probably won’t hear anything until E3, though even then I’d be surprised since Marvel is currently in the midst of its touted "end all be all" event in Secret Wars. In the meantime, I’ll get the armchair quarterback train rolling with some ideas on what Telltale and Marvel could do together.

Here are 5 things I would love to see:

Age of Apocalypse

This might sound obvious, but obvious ideas aren’t necessarily bad ones. Age of Apocalypse is one of the most popular alternate realities that Marvel has ever created, and even pre-Secret Wars this timeline has been revisited time and time again. It is rife with possibilities and heart-wrenching moments that Telltale is known for, and with so many mutants involved in the storyline, Telltale would have an endless amount of wiggle room to work with.

Reason it might not happen: Fox owns the movie rights to the X-Men. While that doesn’t preclude Marvel from using the characters in a video game, they just don’t seem that eager to do the X-Men movie verse any favors until the rights return home.

Shadowland

Daredevil has been restored to respectability with Marvel and Netflix’s recent TV series, so why not capitalize on that by focusing on him and all of Marvel’s street level characters? Shadowland involved a laundry list of people, including Elektra, Luke Cage, Spider-Man, Ghost Rider, White Tiger, Iron Fist, Moon Knight, and many more. Above all, it was a pretty compelling story, though due to some possible conflicts of interest it might need a bit of tweaking story-wise. Telltale could really let loose here, as most of the characters involved have enough emotional and mental baggage to start selling them as a collection on QVC.

Reason it might not happen: Well, spoiler alert here, but the story doesn’t paint DD in the best light, and he happens to be the villain throughout most of it. Granted, it's not necessarily all his fault, but they probably don’t want to paint him in such a negative light right after the show has garnered such a strong following. Still, it could be fantastic.

S.W.O.R.D.

Truth be told, I don’t even care how she gets involved, I just want her part of the story. Agent Brand is all kinds of awesome in anything she stars in, and would be a welcome addition. Oh, and second that for Amadeus Cho. Ooooh Ooooh, and Squirrel Girl.

Reason it might not happen: Because no one bought the S.W.O.R.D. miniseries. Humbug.

Double O Marvel

While there might not be a Black Widow solo film yet, there has been a great Black Widow ongoing for quite a while now. Why not expand that to include the spymaster side of the Marvel U? This setting would allow the developers to live in the grey area of right and wrong that they seem to covet, and could include some great characters like Mockingbird, Jessica Jones, Spider-Woman, Hawkeye, Winter Soldier, Maria Hill, Deathlok, Ronin, Cloak and Dagger, etc.

Reason it might not happen: This group of characters would be extremely compelling, and it would give us something that centers around Black Widow, but Disney and Marvel can’t seem to ever get the hint that people want more of her, so I'm not that hopeful. That said, it really should happen. Telltale would knock this out of the park.

Heroes For Hire

If you’re looking for a team or a concept that can spotlight relatively unknown characters, but also allows unlimited flexibility, look no further than Heroes for Hire. Aside from Luke Cage and Iron Fist, Telltale could have a ball with bad ass but often overlooked characters like Misty Knight, Shang Chi, Colleen Wing, and Black Cat. They could also throw in people like Cloak and Dagger, Moon Knight, etc, for good measure, since those are characters that could easily fit into this type of format. This could be a bit more lighthearted romp through the Marvel Universe, which Telltale proved they could do with their recent Borderlands series.

Reason it might not happen: Same as before, but this concept would allow you to put a bigger name in the mix to bring some attention to it.

Those are just a few ideas, but we would love to hear yours as well!

DOCTOR STRANGE Connection to Thanos Teased by Director Scott Derrickson

doctor-strange-connection-to-thanos-teased-by-director-scott-derrickson

If you follow director Scott Derrickson on Twitter, then you know the guy is very excited about bringing Doctor Strange to life for Marvel. He's always posting cool Doctor Strange comic art, and I imagine this is stuff that's inspiring the story he's developing for the movie.

His most recent tweet teases Doctor Strange's connection to the villain Thanos. As you know, Phase 3 of Marvel's plan leads up to Avengers: Infinity War, which will feature our favorite heroes battling the Mad Titan. Benedict Cumberbatch's Strange will be involved with this battle, so it makes sense that there would be a connection.

This connection is Death, a character I hope will be included in the MCU, especially since Thanos is involved, because it's Death that inspires Thanos to cause absolute chaos in the universe and makes him want to destroy all of creation. This is all because Thanos wants to earn the affections of Death.

The image above that Derrickson posted is a comic cover with the headline "Dr. Strange Meets Death," and it came along with his caption, "As will we all..." In the comics, the sorcerer confronts Death in his domain, and ends up defeating it by merging with the spirit of Eternity. His master, The Ancient One, reveals that this is just part of his trials to become the Sorcerer Supreme, and since he's defeated Death, he will no longer age.

It would be so cool to see Death make an appearance in Doctor Strange. This tweet is not confirmation that Death will be in the movie, but it's something I've been wanting to talk about, and this gave me the opportunity. Death is a major link that would make complete sense to include in the film. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed.

Do you think Death will find its way into the MCU in Phase 3?

Cool 8-Bit Video Explains The Jaw-Dropping Size of MINECRAFT

I've never played Minecraft, and basically the only knowledge I have of it thus far comes from seeing Game of Thrones' Westeros recreated in the video game world. I just got a new book called Block City: How to Build Incredible Worlds in Minecraft that I've flipped through, and it details a bunch of the game's biggest cities and worlds, showing how long they took to build, the number of buildings on those particular maps, and more. It also gives tips on how to create urban metropolises, fantasy kingdoms, futuristic zones, and historical realms, so maybe that'll get me into the game.

In the meantime, though, check out this cool 8-bit video from Wired, which talks about the global phenomenon and explains the absolutely ludicrous scope of what's possible in the world of Minecraft. I knew it was big, but I had no idea it was this massive.

Two Kids Steal Kevin Bacon's Police Cruiser in The Trailer For COP CAR

Cop Car was one of the more entertaining movies that I saw at Sundance earlier this year. The story follows two young boys who find a police cruiser in the middle of nowhere, and they decide to take it on a little joy ride that becomes a crazy adventure — not only for them, but for the cop, who owns the car. When he finds out the car is gone, he embarks on mission to hunt them down and get the car back, because it holds a secret.

The movie was directed by Jon Watts, and Kevin Bacon stars as the cop in the film. The movie is worth checking out and you can read our review for it here, or watch our video review here. The movie is full of intense situations that are sure to make audiences squirm. Here's an official description of the story:

When two good-natured but rebellious young boys (James Freedson-Jackson and Hays Wellford) stumble across an abandoned cop car hidden in a secluded glade they decide to take it for a quick joyride.  Their bad decision unleashes the ire of the county sheriff (Kevin Bacon) and leads to brutal consequences.

Cop Car opens on August 7th and hits VOD on August 14th.

There are many who credit the the 1990s X-Men cartoon as one of the best cartoons of all time. Personally I'd have to agree, as the show handled adult themes and scenarios with a genuine ease. I personally can credit the show for my love of characters such as Nightcrawler, Gambit, Morph, and the spark of awesome that is Jubilee (I even named my fish after her). Today you can relive some of that nostalgia with Marvel's new infinite digital offering, fittingly titled X-Men '92. You can get a small preview of the book below, and download the whole issue on Marvel.com or from the Marvel App.

June 23rd can't come quickly enough for fans of the Arkham series. That's the release date for Batman: Arkham Knight, the conclusion of Rocksteady's awesome trilogy that takes The Dark Knight out into the streets of Gotham City against some of his most fearsome foes yet.

The game's latest trailer shows off some content that's coming to PlayStation owners first, including Scarecrow's Nightmare missions, a Justice League 3000 skin, and — my personal favorite — a skin of the classic Adam West 1960s Batman costume. Take a look below:

The YouTube channel gazorra has released a fan-made video that gives us a concept for a Star Trek: The Next Generation spin-off series that focuses on Commander William Riker. The video comes along with the following caption:

Riker gets his own TV show, and some of it will haunt your dreams (nightmares).

This video might just be the greatest and oddest tribute to Jonathan Frakes' Riker that has ever been made. Not that there's a ton of tribute videos out there for the character, but this one just manages to perfectly capture the essence of the character.

Tilda Swinton to Play The Ancient One in Marvel's DOCTOR STRANGE

$

Marvel Studios is in negotiations with actress Tilda Swinton (The Beach, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe) to take on the role of The Ancient One in director Scott Derrickson's Doctor Strange

Swinton is no stranger to the comic book genre as she has previously starred in the big screen adaptations of Snowpiercer and 2005’s Constantine. She is a very interesting choice for The Ancient One as the character is traditionally portrayed as an older male in the comics. The funny thing is, I can easily imagine Swinton in the role. She's just got that look of an experienced sorcerer, and on top of that she's a solid actress.

I know this casting probably isn't going to sit well with some of the fans, but you've got to remember that this is Marvel, and they have been shaking things up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It shouldn't come as a surprise that they would do something like this.

If the negotiations go well, she will join Benedict Cumberbatch, who is taking on the role of the Sorcerer Supreme a.k.a. Stephen Strange, a cocky surgeon that loses the use of his hands in a car accident. While attempting to heal himself he discovers magic, and The Ancient One aids him in his efforts to expand on his new-found powers and leads his ascendance to becoming the Sorcerer Supreme.

Marvel was originally looking to cast a male in the role. Some of the rumored actors they were looking at included Morgan Freeman, Bill Nighy, and Ken Watanabe. They obviously ended up restructuring the character.

It was also previously rumored that 12 Years a Slave star Chiwetel Ejiofor was in talks to play the film’s villain, but that has yet to be confirmed by the studio. Doctor Strange is set to be released on November 4th, 2016.

If you know a thing or two about YouTube gaming culture, no doubt you've heard of Dan Avidan of Game Grumps and Ninja Sex Party fame. His legendary pipes have belted out some of the tastiest songs on the 'net about video games and/or his own Johnson. Now he's joined forces with techno-pop band Tupper Ware Remix Party and the animation wizards at Lazerhourse to bring you 'The Hit'!

It is very reminiscent of the epic, story-driven music videos of the '80s with a dash of awesome Streets of Rage-style action. So watch this catchy, toe-tapping jam and try not to get it too deeply stuck in your head.

Kate Upton, Dakota Fanning, and More Up For FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM

Warner Bros. is stepping back into the Harry Potter universe with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, a separate story that takes place 70 years before Potter shows up at Hogwarts. This film follows Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne), a "magizoologist" who wrote one of the textbooks that Harry and his friends eventually study. Author J.K. Rowling is making her screenwriting debut, and Potter helmer David Yates is returning to direct.

The Wrap reports that several actors have appeared on a new shortlist for roles in the film. Dakota Fanning, Saoirse Ronan, Lili Simmons (Banshee), and Alison Sudol (Transparent, Dig) are in contention for the role of Tina, while supermodel Kate Upton (The Other Woman), Katherine Waterston (Inherent Vice), and Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby) are being eyed for the role of Queenie, Tina's older sister. In the book, Newt Scamander is married to a woman named Porpentina, so it seems like this "Tina" role is that of his eventual wife. The report states that several of these actresses have test deals in place and are expected to read opposite Redmayne over the next week, so I expect we'll be hearing an official casting announcement soon.

In addition, Variety's Justin Kroll says that a few actors are up for the role of Jacob, Newt's rival: Steve Zissis (who is great on the HBO series Togetherness), Zack Pearlman (The Inbetweeners), and Dan Fogler (Fanboys) are among them.

Fantastic Beasts hits theaters on November 18, 2016. Who would you like to see join the cast?

Supercut: THE WIRE's Tautologies Are What They Are

David Simon's classic crime drama The Wire is considered by many to be the greatest TV show of all time. I'm not entirely certain where it'd rank on my own personal list if I were to make one, but I know it would be extremely high. Though the HBO series didn't garner considerable attention while it was still airing, the show has become downright legendary in the years since it went off the air, with people recommending it to their friends and word about it's quality slowly spreading. (The rise of binge-watching was instrumental.)

I didn't even know what a tautology was until I watched this video, but it's a phrase like, "It is what it is," or "if it happens, it happens" — you know the ones. And I didn't realize it at the time, but The Wire absolutely loved using tautologies across the series' run. Now PressPlay has edited them into a single supercut, and it just makes me want to go back and immerse myself in the show all over again. The game is the game...

ANT-MAN Writers To Script TRANSFORMERS Prequel and Michael Bay May Return For Another Sequel

I used to be a Michael Bay apologist. I appreciate his unique skill set, I'd go to bat for films like The Rock and Armageddon (despite its recent Honest Trailer), and I thought Pain & Gain was excellent. But his involvement with the Transformers franchise, though certainly lucrative for Bay personally and for Paramount Pictures, has made me pump the brakes on defending him. And now it appears that even though he said Transformers: Age of Extinction was going to be his final Transformers movie, he may be coming back for Transformers 5.

Deadline brings word that writers Andrew Barrer & Gabriel Ferrari, who did production rewrites of Marvel's Ant-Man, have been hired to write Transformers One, a film intended to be a prequel that takes place on the Transformers' home planet of Cybertron. Apparently this could end up being an animated movie, but the duo is supposedly joining the recently-formed writers' room with the expectation that they'll write a live-action Transformers movie as well.

The report also indicates that the studio's plan is to have a live-action sequel ready for when Bay returns from directing his Benghazi movie 13 Hours, with the implication being that he'd slide into the director's chair of Transformers 5 as soon as possible. While this isn't 100% confirmed yet, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if it happened. All of this being said, The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman is now among those in the Transformers Cinematic Universe's writers' room, so here's hoping he's able to do something to increase the quality of the scripts moving forward.

Though it was essentially a non-factor in pop culture upon its released in 1994, The Shawshank Redemption benefited tremendously from repeat plays on cable, eventually becoming IMDb's highest rated movie of all time. Cinefix has given the movie the 8-Bit Cinema treatment, and as always, it's really cool to see classic movies in this form. Check it out below. Get busy livin', or get busy dyin'.

Chris Pine Cast as Steve Trevor in WONDER WOMAN

$

There were rumors that Scott Eastwood would be playing Wonder Woman love interest Steve Trevor in Suicide Squad, but now we know that isn't true. Variety reports that Star Trek star Chris Pine has been cast in that role in Warner Bros.' upcoming Wonder Woman standalone film (and presumably other films in the Justice League franchise as well).

Eastwood was reportedly given the chance to either audition for Steve Trevor or take a guaranteed smaller role in Suicide Squad, and he ended up choosing the mystery role. It's unclear whether Pine's Steve Trevor will make an appearance in David Ayer's supervillain movie to connect it to the events of the Wonder Woman movie.

In the comics, Steve Trevor is a WWII fighter pilot who crashes on Paradise Island, where the Amazonian princess Diana nurses him back to health and falls in love with him. She eventually returns with him to the outside world, where she adopts the moniker of Diana Prince and becomes Trevor's co-worker, as well as the superhero Wonder Woman. Pine (whose Gaston-esque prince was the best part of Into the Woods) seems like a great fit for the part, and it'll be cool to see how he interacts with Gal Gadot's lead character.

Patty Jenkins will direct Wonder Woman from a script by Jason Fuchs (Pan), and the film arrives in theaters on June 23rd, 2017.

I've got an incredibly cool short film for you to watch called Donning the Digital Mask: Anonymous. It's more of a video presentation than it is a short, but the story is presented in a way that makes me believe a film based on the concept would make one hell of a great movie.

The video was sent in to us by its creator Chris Finn, who says that it gives us "a glimpse inside the internet-driven collective Anonymous, which has emerged as one of the leading hacktivist movements, targeting high-profile institutions with fearless cyber attacks."

The presentation was done in an awesomely slick and stylish way. Everything flows together extremely well. It's an impressive piece of work, and Finn created it as his Senior project at Savannah College of Art and Design. Here's a more detailed description of what you are about to watch:

Since its beginning on 4chan, the internet-driven collective Anonymous has emerged as one of the leading hacktivist movements, targeting high-profile institutions with fearless cyber attacks. Looking into how this collective of online hackers went from pranksters to vigilantes for global justice lead to an intriguing discovery of unique qualities that form Anonymous. A certain tonal element of Anonymous resonated with me and immediately translated into an exciting aesthetic I was eager to take on. There is a mesmerizing and compelling, but also terrifying quality to the dynamic spread of a collective who’s story is being written with every new day and operation.

Watch the video and tell us what you think about how the story of Anonymous is presented.

Jason Reitman Set to Direct BEEKLE for DreamWorks Animation

Jason Reitman, the director behind film such as Juno, Up in the Air, and Young Adult, is jumping into his first animated film project. He will be directing a film for DreamWorks called Beekle, which is an adaptation of the children’s book The Adventures of Beekle: The Unimaginary Friend.

The book was written and illustrated by Dan Santat, and it tells the story of an imaginary creature searching for a child to befriend him.

Co-presidents of feature animation at DreamWorks, Bonnie Arnold and Mireille Soria, said in a statement:

"Welcoming Jason onto this project is a true coup, as his incredible ability to tell heartfelt character-driven stories with a signature comedic tone makes him the perfect choice to bring this beloved book to the big screen.”

Reitman then shared his thoughts on taking on the project:

"I was book shopping with my daughter, when a little tooth-shaped character in a paper crown stole our hearts. His name was Beekle, and I'm honored to now be adapting Santat's charming story into a feature film. I'm particularly proud to be working with DreamWorks Animation, makers of Kung Fu Panda, the first film my daughter ever saw on the big screen."

Reitman is a solid filmmaker who does a great job bringing his characters to life in the films he makes. It will be interesting to see how his directing style translates to animation. Here's the official book description:

This magical story begins on an island far away where an imaginary friend is born. He patiently waits his turn to be chosen by a real child, but when he is overlooked time and again, he sets off on an incredible journey to the bustling city, where he finally meets his perfect match and-at long last-is given his special name: Beekle.

New York Times bestselling and award-winning author and illustrator Dan Santat combines classic storytelling with breathtaking art, creating an unforgettable tale about friendship, imagination, and the courage to find one's place in the world.
